Mercenary Town (2005): The notorious 32 Battalion -- black soldiers who fought for white governments - were the shock troops of apartheid. Now the ANC wants to dismantle their retirement town and scatter the community.
For downloads and more information visit journeyman.tv/5...
The town of Pomfret may stand on the site of an old asbestos mine but it's the only home the soldiers of 32 Battalion know. When their unit was disbanded at the end of apartheid, they retired here. "This is our land ... if we are spread out I believe many of us will suffer", fears one resident. But when 70 mercenaries, many of them current or former residents of Pomfret, were arrested for attempting a coup in Equatorial Guinea, authorities acted quickly. They announced that Pomfret would be dismantled and its 3,000 residents evicted. "It's unjust", complains one former soldier. They feel they're being punished for their violent past.

My father, the late Sgt Jose Correia Pinto Ribeiro (Robbie), was denied the HONORIS CRUX. On recommendation by Col Jan D. Breytenbach, it was still denied because he was black. I am proud of the man my father was, and let me tell you that there is no greater feeling in the world, nor the words to describe the feeling i get every time i hold his medals in my hands. Same goes for my uncle, 'L. Carlos A. Correia Pinto Ribeiro, also remembered as "Little Robbie" A special thank you, from me, to the men who tirelessly, to this day, celebrate and honor my father and his contribution. Carla M. Pinto Ribeiro

FAWL For Africa with Love, from what I have read here I think you are either from Angola or Portugal. First of all, it is sad to read what happened to your late father. The 32 Battalion mostly former soldiers of the FNLA. Yours is similar to mine, however my relatives learnt a lesson soon after Angola's Independence, they were part of the UPA/FNLA in Kinkusu-DRC today, where their base was located, after the defeat to MPLA and we lost hope of HOLDEN ROBERTO becoming the president of Angola, and the pain of loosing our relatives, the elders decided never again will any person from my family will join the army. So, during all those years of fighting my family were just spectators, even if one gets caught during the round ups, will do his best to escape, and it was like that. However, it may look very bleak for those guys, but if they truly repent, Angola will take them back, MPLA are not the evil people assume they are, actually one of the most responsible party in Africa, if yourself or any of your family members are in such situation, all you can do is present yourselves at the embassy or get the red Cross involved. Angola is the land of your ancestors, the past is ugly, but the future will be better.

Both of those men knew Danny Roxo. I want to look into the Honoris Crux claim. If I recall correctly, Jan also suggest that Danny get the Hon. Crux for his service, but was eventually denied. I want to know more though.

misleading title for several reasons: 1) 32Bn weren't _shock troops_ since there hasn't been a designation for such an infantry role like that since WWI. They were light infantry with a reconnaissance wing that also participated in special operations. In essence, they were a separate insurgent group that operated within Angola. 2) The film suggests that this battalion was led by white officers, this is only partly true, as there were Non-commissioned Officers, Warrant Officers and highly talented enlisted whites that also served in this Battalion. On that note, there were several black NCOs and WO's and at least one Officer Commanding, who was black portuguese-speaking. 3) The term "black nationalist", as the movie asserts, it a misnomer. These troops are from Holden Roberto's FNLA and some of them are probably old enough to have been a part of the UPA, a group which fought against the Portuguese colonial rule. To assert that the MPLA was black nationalist, but the FNLA, and by extension, the members of 32Bn, are not black nationalist is logically absurd. 4) They weren't _mercenaries_ since these people weren't fighting for money, rather an ideology closely akin to the FNLA's which held an anti-communist stance as one of it's main points. 5) No, they were never called _The Buffalo Soldiers,_ they were called _The Buffalo Battalion._ 6) PW Botha never sold out 32Bn, that was solely DeKlerk's move. Botha maintained that he was willing to talk peace, so long as South Africa could keep her Military and the communists would abide by the agreed upon rules of detente and cease-fire, to which they never did. Further, Botha was ousted in a soft-coup by members of the National Party, including DeKlerk himself. 7) Also, the term "black nationalist" or "black nationalist movement" within the continent of Africa is an absurd notion that was coined by Steve Biko, a communist, who studied (indoctrinated?) in the USSR and was an asset to the USSR. Africa has never been a "black power" movement or state, it is and will remain, a highly tribalised continent which does not, nor ever did, recognize the ideas of black nationalist. To force, for example, the Zulu and !Xhosa together would end in them killing eachother. 8) JMP leaves out the fact that there was widespread violence in the black townships due to communists lynching black people who either lightly supported the government of their own tribal leaders, or wished to remain neutral.

The other reason that there was so much interest in this region is the high quality diamonds. As long as there is instability they remain cheap. Ideologies are rarely the sole reason for conflict. Ironic that at one point Cuban conscripts were guarding American oil installations and at the same time the American government were funding Unita and South Africa, who were constantly trying to blow them up. I fought with 32 battalion in the late eighties. Brave soldiers who were betrayed by their leaders. However generally as far as the Afrikaaner mentality is concerned gratitude and appreciation isn't part of their repertoire, especially if you are not one of them.

British author Frederick Forsythe (Day of the Jackal) participated in planning, outfitting and organizing a mercenary manned coup to overthrow the government of Equatorial Guinea ( covertly on behalf of the UK, with the UK version of "plausible deniability"). The plot was uncovered by Spanish authorities and a ship carrying the group to Africa was seized around Spain. Forsythe later wrote a novel, The Dogs of War, about a successful coup in a fictional African nation very similar to Equatorial Guinea. About 3/4 of the story goes into intricate details on staging a coup, from hiring mercs, buying arms illegally and hiding their intended use and destination, buying gear including Zodiac speedboats, getting a ship for transport etc.It basically served as a manual on coups. My point in all this is that the coup plot mentioned here involving Mark Thatcher against Equatorial Guinea was almost identical in details to the one planned by Forsythe, and may have been an attempt by the UK to rehash the old plan. 😁

the 32 battalion were mostly angolans recruited by the s. african gov (see 2:30) - and they are condemned for fighting against their "african brothers" but today there are ugandan and ethiopian troops fighting for the AU (with chinese financial support) in somalia and no one is condemning them (except for the muslim world who want somalia to be like afghanistan under the taliban). but 32 battalion had white officers (see 2:41) so they must be bad guys. what a crock of liberal hypocrisy.
@oniauri3214
@oniauri3214 3 жыл бұрын
AU is the african union, so why would african soldiers fighting extremism in another african country be stigmatized? 32 battalion isnt considred bad because they had white officers. Theyre considered bad because they fought for the Apartheid government of South Africa. Even the USA avoided south africa because of its Overt institutionalized racism. Its the reason South Africa developed nukes. The world condemned SA for its apartheid system and they felt they wouldnt be helped if the countries around them attacked. Then they literaaly dismantled the entire nuclear weapons program tpwards the end of apartheid because they didnt believe black people can oversee the awesome responsibility of maintaining nuclear bombs. Dont try to rewrite history. Its like those southern apologists that claim the American Civil War wasnt about slavery even though the entire constitution of the Confederacy was about protecting the instituion of slavery for the white man.

32 was a force of incredible efficiency and they were not mercenaries, they were a battalion within the ranks of an internationally recognized army following orders that, being black, they had no option but to follow. No soldier deserves what happened to then. The treatment they have received disgusts me and regardless of how distasteful their actions are to me, I sympathize with them. The world has forgotten that MK, the MPLA, SWAPO etc were doing the same or worse and that is historical fact.

Its pretty clear why the ANC feels and felt the way they do about the 32 batallion and its a shame you lack empathy to see the whole picture. Why would they celebrate a company of soldiers from other african nations fighting for the Apartheid government? ANC fought to dismantle the racist government that hated its own black majority, yet here comes some out of town black folk not caring about the racist policies of apartheid and shooting actual south africans .

32 BTN consisted of portugeuse speaking FNLA who wandered around in southern angola after their esteemed leader in the north ate breakfast whilst SA and the Chinese were giving them artillery support to attack MpLA. On full tummies and no more artillery they crossed the open planes and were desimated. After proper training they assisted SADF to oppose SWAPO who were killing villagers in northen namibia as part fo their " freedom struggle" sponsored by the Soviets and which started after political talks between SA and tribal leaders were underway for handover of power. So..kill the tribal leaders as well. This is the predicament of these people - the fought SWAPO and smacked them well, probably embarrassed Angola, SA new regime dont like them and working for PMC is probably a threat to SA. Botswana mightbdo well tontake them in.?

Interesting spectrum of comments. Those strong on military insights are a bit disappointing with their reactionary political views. Not all of those who are historically and politically informed seem to quite understand the imperatives confronting bona fide soldiers (NOT militias .... big difference). Some commentators here are "sulky", others considered. 13 years since this documentary was made. Who's learnt what, if at all, in the interim?

so you admit apartheid SA had better education than communist mozambique. I'm actually from the UK i spent 12 years in SWA. And if you think i earn £1000 pounds per month ,that's under half the average UK wage, you really are more ignorant than i originally thought. And i really don't understand what you are trying to say "you cant just make things to be political right" wtf?

Of course you have to feel sorry for them, they and their families are being collectively punished for something their (former) government enlisted them to do. As for the comments about "betraying their own people". That's a racis view. Why should they have more in common with Zulus than Boers? Becuase they are black?

@jaxpower1 Apartheid is what lead to this. Cause and effect, The Whites were only buying time by using Apartheid. This wasn't colonial American where most Natives died out from disease. The Black Natives always had the upper hand in numbers.

Instead of creating Bantustans/Homelands for blacks they should have built a homeland for whites, so they had a refuge after 1994. Now, since they lost power that option is gone.

Losing side? Looking at the body count they were the winning side by FAR
@Thebudokid87
@Thebudokid87 3 жыл бұрын
@KD Media I hear what you say...But in all SMALL wars success is measured in term of bodycount. There are no stand up battles involving large contingents of forces. Battles are fought between patrols and guerilla groups. These contacts are short and usually very deadly. This very uneven struggle produced its own grimm measure of these statistics. Militarily South-Africa was never defeated

Mercenary town because they are feared for what they are capable of doing. In the mid 1990`s about 100 Executive Outcome operatives cleaned up the RUF in Sierra Leone in less than 3 months & stabilized the country. E. O. was forced to leave due to international pressure. A total of 17 000 UN blue berets could not do what this 100 E.Os did. These E.O. operators were Ex 3 2 battalion.

well if all your family were fighting in a war, then bad luck. people get killed in wars. And i ask you how many civilians were killed by the ANC and SWAPO? McBride bombed a student Bar, i see you never condemn such acts. Typical double standards

ANC should have kept those soldiers and used them to train a better military muscle. They should stop relying on "people's power" Look at South Africa now. ANC cannot even contain gangs when they started attacking immigrants, and that is "people's power". Sometimes military is very important

@compubitz It wasn't an Apartheid war in the way that civil war wasn't to end slavery. The Institution in place at the time supported apartheid (which you've got to admit isn't right under any circumstance), and the populace got tired of it. the rebels overran the police and required military support. battalion 32 comes in, not mercenaries just soldiers following orders.. but for the wrong side. that about it? i still don't support em, either way.
