Rory's measured tones are lovely. I watch Trek Trendy too, but Rory has a lot less hype to his delivery. I always like to see the township of cook. For a number of years, my cousins David and Rosa Gallas, were the school teachers here. They absolutely loved it and the characters whom lived, worked and maintained the rail line and facilities along the track. Their highlights were the "tucker Train", which delivered fruit, vegetables, meat . groceries and household goods. Of course, Christmas was special, with Father Christmas arriving by train and staying a while with the kids and families. Gee, it was much harder for the smaller track maintenance gangs further out and the isolation, heat and flies carried with it, a heavy toll on those hardy people.

Another fine production by Rory! There is a trick to getting a clean shower at the end of the standard gold carriage - shower early, or very late. From what I observed on my journey from Sydney to Perth, these showers are cleaned by the staff 2 or 3 times a day. I agree regarding the food, it is a cut above the best, and presented really well. Also don't worry about your belongings in a single. If you leave something on your table during an evening excursion, the staff will place the object(s) on your bed next to the choccy. This is how I found my iPad and GoPro when I returned from the Kalgoolie night excursion, neatly placed on my pillow with a chocolate beside them.

Thank you very much for this spectacular travelogue. This journey is especially close to my heart as I did the journey myself as a 14-year old boy travelling with my parents on route from Adelaide to Perth approximately in 1965. It was a very eventful journey and exposed the lack of medical contingencies which led to many revisions after the incident. We were a family of British migrants who were relocating from Adelaide to Perth for practical and financial reasons.There was mass unemployment in Adelaide and employment opportunities in Perth will much better. My sister aged 18 who had given birth to a baby was travelling along with us as a family of five. The accommodation on the train was not 5-star and pretty basic. It was not an environment that was conducive to travelling with a small child. We took turns in looking after the baby and one of the ways was to walk along the corridor so she could look out of the window it seemed a good way to keep her amused. When it became my turn as a 14-year old boy I decided to open the door and take her into the next set of carriages just to ease the boredom. However one passenger coming the other way did not hold the door open and the door slammed onto the baby's finger chopping it completely off and hanging by a piece of skin. I quickly took the child back to my mum who quickly bandaged the finger back into place. We alerted the guard who went through out the train appealing for anyone with medical experience as there was no doctor or medical staff on board. Eventually he found there was an elderly retired nurse who came and offered. she did what she could to sedate the baby and there we were 100 miles from the Western Australian border. It was mooted the notion of calling the flying doctor but this came to nothing as there was no practical way that the aeroplane could land. And so it was decided that we wait until the train got to the Western Australian border where the train would be routinely searched for any fruit. (It was forbidden to take fruit from one state to another because of the prevalence of fruit fly). This of course would cause delay in the baby getting medical treatment. So it was decided that a taxi would meet my mom at the border and become a defacto ambulance. Hence the rest of the family remained on the train whilst my mum and the baby went to Kalgoorlie hospital. When she got there there was no Doctor on site so they had to get him to come from his house to attend to the emergency. The doctor stitched the finger on to the hand and dressed the wound and provided sedatives for the baby. By way of a miracle my mum made it back to the train in time for the train change in Kalgoorlie which was a wild west style old train. On arriving in Perth my mum took a taxi to the hospital. It turned out that the doctor did a good job in the initial stages and because the the finger was grafted back on to the hand very quickly at the time of the accident, it saved it and to this day it is hardly noticeable. I've often thought of making the trip again just to revisit my memories. I recall the deep impact that the train had on my psych. such beauty combined with tragedy leaves a deep impact. The outback is truly amazing and even a video log cannot capture the essence. However it's the closest I'm going to get in my old age so thank you indeed keep safe on your journey.

I really think you have presented the Australian Train Journeys Series in a professional and informative manner and could sell the rights to Journey Beyond for promotional purposes. Those Red Service sitting carriages should be reinstated on the Journey Beyond trains for those who need to commute between Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Darwin as an alternative to Flying. I can't wait for your next adventure Rory so please don't make us wait too long. Lol!!
@charlesjay8818 Жыл бұрын
Like he said it wasn't economical viable and the government subsidies was stopped. Also taking the train from Sydney or Adelaide to Perth is not as cheap as flying (Jetstar - budget airline) and it also take 3-4 days. This is not a commuter train it's a tourist/leisure journey
@aussiejohn5835 Жыл бұрын
@Charles Jay This train was once available to all at a reasonable price until the combined governments of NSW,SA,WA and the Commonwealth decided to abandon cross continent passenger rail travel. When the service was sold to a private operator, the alternative coach travel from Adelaide to Perth was cancelled to encourage people onto the train. This worked until the new owners decided to remove the Red Class and have all Gold/First class sleeping accommodation. The service very quickly became a luxury tourist train which left the commuters and budget traveller high and dry because the coach/Bus service was not and has not been reinstated. This is very inconvenient for those who can't fly or drive.
@charlesjay8818 Жыл бұрын
@@aussiejohn5835 Shame i guess, but that's what happens when things are privatized. The government should have put a condition that the operator has to operate at least a red carriage for the contract. Even if it makes a loss from time to time, because the profits from the Gold/Platinum can subsidise that. I remember travelling from Perth to Kalgoorlie on the red carriage with our camper van on the back of the train in the early eighties... was fun

I love how detailed and accurate your explanations are, Rory. Just one minor point. You mentioned megabits (the speed of your internet connection), rather than megabytes (the amount of data they limit you to)

Its Megabytes (MB) per second if its copper wire, and Megabits (Mb) per second if its fiber. Here in Kiwi-land, we have fiber, and the speed is in Mbps. I have it at full throttle, 950 Mbps. Just not quite at 1 Gbps. And my data... Unlimited. I don't have to worry about it. What a way to go!!!

Nice video Rory, I have a suggestion you can take if you want. Merging the Sydney to Adelaide Indian Pacific video with the Adelaide to Perth video which is this one together, may sound weird as both of them were recorded in different times but your choice. 1:15 - They should probably introduce a bus route which comes from Keswick. 1:23 - There also used to be a station called Keswick Station, it was the only station on the Adelaide network that had no wheelchair access, it closed like 9 years ago and demolished sadly during the electrification of the Noarlunga (Well, Seaford now) and Tonsley lines. 3:13 - I might as well prefer CL Class streamlined locomotives, more character on the Indian Pacific than an NR Class loco in my humble opinion! 4:20 - I wonder what will happen to them? Time will tell, some future decisions for stored vehicles are known and unknown. 20:25 - “Getting there is half the fun.” Good old Australian National, sucks to see it split up and privatised ever since the mid to late 1990s. 23:18 - The then NSW State Rail Authority used to provide 86 electric locomotives built by Comeng on Granville, NSW on the Indian Pacific from Central to I think as far as Lithgow with diesel taking it for the entire journey to Perth. Pity that doesn’t happen anymore, most of the 86s along with the 85s were cut up and never used by the dummies of Silverton Rail, most of the 86 Class were barely 30 years old. 32:10 - At least this version of Southern Cross is more quieter but no amenities than the nightmare version of itself in Melbourne, Spencer Street before Southern Cross was probably better than that! But anyways, good video!
