I thought you were gonna say "I'd love a video on history while on recreational drugs"
@AKAK-rh7lr26 күн бұрын
@ Who doesn’t.
@micnorton948726 күн бұрын
@@AKAK-rh7lrThat would be a complicated history since the concept of "recreational drugs" has only been a thing since the industrial revolution started... The taking of potions for the altering of consciousness has of course been a thing since before what we call civilization but once civilization started the taking of especially mushrooms was associated with religious rites and social functions like festivals or whatever... Once humans developed complex thought patterns though,, a lot of experimentation started taking place regarding medicines and other potions for various reasons,, with psychoactive potions of course gaining the most prominent place due to their central nervous system effects... For instance the consuming of alcohol had to wait until pottery was invented since how else would a sample of grape juice become fermented and produce enough alcohol to be noticed clinically? On the other hand opium poppies can be chewed right off the stalk,, khat and coca are just leaves that are chewed or in the case of khat the stems also,, mushrooms could of course be eaten right off the ground and cannabis use was usually the ingestion of the raw flowers or once the resin was obtained by working the sticky flowers with your hands and then scraping the gunk hashish off your fingers, the hashish could be lit which was the first example of incense... The concept of smoking through a pipe or tube was discovered in the new world, there was no example of any smoking of drugs except by burning incense or just inhaling the smoke before Europeans contact with the new world.... As time went on more knowledge began to be had about these types of substances,, with all kinds of compounds being extracted from plants or sometimes animals but these compounds were invariably called spirits because for one thing they would burn and for another thing they would cause psychoactive effects... So it began to be understood that these compounds which were usually alkaloids could be extracted by solvents and purified,, and one of the strange things about the so-called old west in the United States was that doctors were invariably alcoholic or users of drugs because who else would be interested in the effects of psychoactive substances? Obviously this wasn't limited to America but once the AMA took hold of American medical in pharmacological practices in 1913,, opium and Coca became illegal and that's where the concept of recreational drugs comes in... Before the AMA, the patent medicine world in the United States was generally a wild west of tonics and potions but after the ama, doctors became the sole legal purveyors of narcotics or psychoactive drugs in the United States... However once the synthetic organic chemistry World exploded, new synthetic drugs of all classes began to appear with the government trying to keep a handle on the uses of them but once the production of chemicals wasn't limited by natural conditions, the sky was the limit...

I remember when I started CEGEP (think like... something between High School and University that's specific to Quebec) I needed to take an elective course. Most of my friends took what might be called "write-off" courses for easy grades but I decided to take Western Civ because I like history. It was a pathetically small class with maybe 10 students total, only half of whom regularly showed up to class in the first place. The teacher was someone who was probably in her mid 20s, and it must have been her first year teaching. She was understandably nervous, and for the semester that I had her, most of what was covered was pre-Roman near-east civilization. Like I said, I like history (I REALLY like it, if money weren't an issue it would probably be my passion job) and I gave that class my all. I remember our mid-term was mostly just an in-class essay we had to write about the road network of the Assyrian and later Achaemenid Empires. I tried my absolute best and I remember getting that essay back. I think she just wrote 3 "Wow"s and I got a 100%. I think about that a lot, I hope at least in my own small way I showed her that even if she has a small class that she was still a great teacher.
