In the 2010s, I sold off a JP-8000, a Virus KC and a MS-2000, in an effort to finance an all analog dawless setup. I wouldn't say that this was a mistake but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I have grown to have some regrets about this. In a way, those old VAs kind of struck the perfect balance of cost-effectiveness between feature richness and the immediacy of hardware programmability. Of course, this came at the cost of them being basically plugins running off limited 90s hardware resources, housed inside fancy controllers but there was something charming and magical about their brash syntheticness and the way that they aliased when you changed values on them...

back in the day we used the JP-8080 for 90% of our synth sounds (virtual analog is amazing for creating, and the effects on that unit are very tweakable), and today I use it quite a bit still. Two I know of, both from Kawai: the K4/K4r and the XD5. The K4 is capable of some gritty, nasty digital racket, but the XD5 is the big win. Every sort of percussive sound it can make (as it's their drum sound module) has this edge to it...gritty (it is related to the K4r, after all), metallic, VERY digital. If you like dystopian, percussion-heavy industrial, it's a must-have.

The Casio CZ-1 is one of the most Industrial sounding synths I’ve ever owned. I think there’s a virtual version and also theres a very good user oscillator for the Korg Prologue which captures its sound well. The CZ shares a stand with my Microwave XTK and DSI PolyEvolver forming a virtuous circle of total Industrial mayhem which usually gets sampled into my many old boat anchor samplers. Sweet list! I had a Roland JP-8080 that I sold to buy a guitar. I sometimes miss that synth, but I would personally choose a different one if I buy a hardware synth again. Most folks recommend it for EDM or specifically trance... I never thought I'd see it in an industrial countdown. Today, I have Cherry Audio's Mercury 6 emulation (mimics the Roland Jupiter 6 instead) -- which I like better than the JP. I have often coveted the Ensoniq ESQ-1 or SQ-80 -- I'd prefer owning one of those above the Roland JP series. Fortunately, there is a freebie software plugin known as SQ8L by Siegfried Kullmann. Your DAW must be compatible with 32-bit plugins or use a compatibility layer. I like it! It's also very kind to the CPU DSP-load.
@Corvid4 ай бұрын
If you ever do a video on industrial samplers, Rammstein's heavy use of the Ensoniq ASR-10 is a must have. I don't believe it's all that popular with anyone other than Rammstein in the industrial world, but it's difficult to overemphasise how much of Rammstein's sound revolves around the ASR-10, specifically the range of sample CDs available for it, along with running samples through the effects unit. Richard's trademark sound is the Mesa Dual Rectifier, Paul's is the SansAmp PSA-1 (both DI and into a power amp/cab) along with the SansAmp GT2 in the modern era, Flake's sound is the ASR-10. Rammstein's keyboardist "Flake" Lorenz has his own signature distortion sound (one specific effects chain in the ASR-10), used to create what some people have called the "Flake" solo: essentially the keyboard version of a guitar solo. Used notably in Ich Tu Dir Weh, Frühling in Paris, Das Alte Leid, Wo Bist Du, Hallomann etc. Very specific knowledge, but hey... a lot of industrial really IS nerding the fuck out about a really neat piece of gear. When I got into music in 2008, there was virtually no information about Rammstein's keyboards. Literally just the names of the odd keyboard. No one who was into Rammstein owned one, let alone made videos about it! I was either the first or one of the first to buy an ASR-10 specifically because of Rammstein, and a couple of people on KZbin who ended up being far more dedicated than me still make videos about Rammstein's synths and samples. Most keyboard Flake uses are just for specific presets, but the ASR-10 has remained a staple in Rammstein sound. Hopefully a new generation of musicians will find their way a lot quicker in music than I did because of videos like this, keep up the great work!
@Tonepusher4 ай бұрын
Hey thanks a lot for your comment man! 🤘 Sure the ASR-10 is very very important and like you said 90s Sample CDs hehe I could literally make a video just about Rammstein tbh. Thinking about it. I didn't know about the ''Flake solo'' although I noticed that sound in many songs. Now that you tell me this, I need to remake it on Serum :D haha I grew up with Rammstein, got into industrial because of them. I bought Sehnsucht tape cassette when it came out, I was 9 or 10 I think. Changed my life.

@@Tonepusher If you do decide to make a video on them and want a truly insane amount of information, various people on here along with myself would be happy to share everything we know about Rammstein's keyboards. I got into music purely because of them, and although I ended up getting wildly sidetracked by learning guitar/bass/mixing/production/etc and working on my own music, my first love with always be Rammstein. I ceased being the person who had the most information on them easily 12 years ago when people like @Stefan0xXx and @dudu046 came on the scene. Really glad to know others are carrying the torch, because I royally fell down the music rabbit hole, never to be seen again! Rammstein were life-changing for me too... the moment I heard them on "The Matrix: Music From The Motion Picture", I was absolutely sold. My blueprint musically (for one band at least) is still that compilation CD if it were all by one band (big Prodigy fan, was really into RATM and got massively into Muse, of the the bands heavily inspired by RATM). Thanks for the video, cool ya put it together. Industrial music doesn't get enough focus by media or other KZbin channels. To me, when done right it is the most moving and exciting music ever made. Dark. Giving you a chance to visit "the other side" and come back again. And started with KMFDM and Ministry in Germany and the U.S. at the same time - mid 80's. Kindred and also different spirits (KMFDM w/ 2 singers) half a world away from each other started it all and both still touring today. And when they get a song right like Ministry - Khyber Pass or Lies, or KMFDM - Kunst it's the best thing ever. Like the MS-20s filters for exemple or the imperfection of analog gear and even the ''lifeless'' digital sound of digital synths. Choosing the right gear to achieve the sound you have in your head is very important. However, it's true that the fun in making music (at least for me) is to take any synth and make it sound like you. The Arturia ARP 2600 VST is aight. But it always annoyed me having to scroll around to patch. Korg just released a realllly slick and much better sounding vst of the 2600 in Korg Collection 5. All the parameters are on one single pane, the fx included are some of the best I’ve ever heard on any vst, and it even has a really amazing spring reverb haha. Anyway, worth checking out the demo at least.

Vsts? I always got midi lag when incorporating hardware into computer workstations. Maybe thats not an issue anymore.i use mpc live as my workstation. I dx, 7 200, and volca fm. Beringher makes great clones of classic synths. Have deepmind 12 (juno clone) and started building a eurorack with a neutron and model d they stand alone and fit into the eurorack format if you want to build a synth on them cheeply. Korg volca perscussion is great so is behringer's 808 clone. Usually i just an mpc and the deepmind (juno clone). Sometimes my euro rack the waldorf string machine streichfet and fm synths. The pita with my eurorack set up is that i have to manually manually tune the oscillators turn them off, and the sound design is gone. The mpc comes in handy there as since you can create multi sampled virtual instruments on your mpc. But the eaurorack knob tweaking is gone. And need to get a bigger hard drive on my mpc. Im kind of at the point where i ahouldn't be buying any more synths or drum machines but replacing patch cables midi and audio cables as they go out. I should probably buy a digital mixer. Im using an analog mixer and its hard to get rid of the surface noise... want a talk box too. all those synths you mention are awesome. But really i could get by on my mpc, juno clone, & dx 200 7 or volca fm ran through the analog filters on cheap eurorack set up. Like playing the filters too.. if you set up your analog filters right they generate a sine wave you can play. . . Then casios are mostly toys but there are a couple cool ones i wish i hadnt given or thrown away.

I bought the Sequential Pro One instead. I have the Atari 1040Ste Skinny Puppy used at Subconscious Studios. And I have a second Atari 1040Ste. We used the Microwaves. the JP-8000 was one of my favorite synths that I want to forget now lol. It was such a great sounding synth but it was sooooo poorly built. Every show, we were having to re-solder the pots back to the board because they were not mounted to the case as well as the board, just to the board and had wiggle room in the plastic shell. The slightest bump and they'd break off the board. I ended up throwing my JP-8000 away in 2021 after having had enough of re-soldering the pots for the 400th time lol. Also, Suicide Commando doesn't just use them live, that is his sound. I've spoken with him in massive depth about it. That synth is 90% of the suicide commando's sound. He recently bought a Roland SH-201 which also has the Supersaw that makes his sound so infamous, but it's far too clean for his tastes and the filter, even though digital, sounds very different so he sticks to the JP-8000. The Prophet VS is such a unique and gorgeous sounding piece of hardware. The Prophet VS was used on PHM and Downward Spiral ssssooo heavily. Downward, most of it got resampled into the Emax II to muddy it up and give it a bit of an edge, as at the time Trent was OBSESSED with the Emax II and was sampling EVERYTHING through it to an almost annoying level according to Clouser. Problem with a VST version is you lose the Analog filter. What made the VS stand out from like the Yamaha SY-22 and other vector synths IS the analog filter. You had the classic curtis filter which was what truly gave it it's sound. If you sit down and program the same patch on a SY-22 (hard because of the waveforms to begin with, but can kinda of get close) they sound monumentally different. Same with the VST version. The VST is too crisp sounding compared to the vintage filter. Honestly, Behringer has been doing a great job with their clones and the VS clone is probably the closest any of us will get to the true Prophet VS sound without dropping $5k. ESQ-1

The SQ80V or SQ8L plugins are a much better alternative to the UVI as the they do the actual synthesis and not just a rompler like the UVI . The SQ80 was an upgraded ESQ1 essentially with same voice chip , filter , and amp , but more waveforms and bells and whistles that don’t apply in a plug-in form
@Tonepusher4 ай бұрын
yeah like I said in the video the same chip was used in the SQ80. Having this said, I know the SQ80 is a better synth all around. But this video was more about what they used at the time. I also use the SQ80 software a lot! One of my favorite actually hehe Also that synth looks incredible haha
@Maschinestorm4 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say UVI does 0 synthesis. You do get two oscs, lfo, modulation, amp, filters and an effects chain.

I have a question for you (and maybe a future video...) what guitar is mostly used for metal indus and what effect will do the job, I am talking only about pedals, no emulation on computer. Also I have read that I need active guitar microphones, is it true or I can achieve that sharp sound (Rammstein and Ministry) with passive microphones on my guitar? What would be a cheap setup that will get me "THE" sound I am looking for please? Does the boss ML2 will do the job, or I need something else? Some people are talking about a Zoom GX1? Do you agree?
