G'day to all... I have already spoken with my dealer - My request is to "REMOVE the locking nuts before delivery"... Have you ever been somewhere and you need the keys... Supposed to be there... but nope!!! Twice I have had to get locks broken to replace tyres! It's funny as both were Volkswagen... I swear it is the dudes in the tyre shops who lose them!! Love the videos - its grand to see like minded people.

I have a yr 2000 Merc W203 estate @300'000 km, a Diesel. Runs like a charm, but sadly starts to rust (doors and fenders only, no critical parts). My wife has a 2008 Merc R171 @120'000 km. Optically and technically very good, although we have to refill A/C and to repair the vent which is noisy and doesn't work on the passenger side.

Standard open ended nut = 32g Original closed cap nut = 74g Locking wheel nut = 84g Just for your balancing information Christian they could have put the lock nut opposite the valve couldn't they .
@einfelder8262
@einfelder8262 Жыл бұрын
There's not enough gyro force that close to the hub centre for the wheel nut to affect balance. You get more imbalance when you pick up a stone in the tread. Putting the lock nut opposite the valve doesn't make any difference, the wheel is balanced with the valve in place, so it doesn't matter where the lock nut is.
@Pandora882

@@einfelder8262 I know Cristian is a balancing expert that why I supplied the nit weights .
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian Жыл бұрын
@@einfelder8262 If the weight difference is 10 grams x 75 mm radius , then 75 gmm of unbalance is introduced by this nut. The balance tolerance of a brake disk rotor for example in a modern vehicle like this is 180 gmm. So this nut is eventually equivalent to a out-of-spec brake disk rotor. And that is not correct - not on a high price vehicle like this. The reason for low balance specs in the road wheel drive line is the high autobahn speed. At 180 kmh you feel 75 gmm (on 4 wheels), especially if they vectorially line up with the residual unbalnce of the brake rotor and the wheel. I do build production drive line balance machines for a living and do KZbin as a hobby. Christian

@@Vera_and_Christian Grenadier top speed is listed as 160kph, no-one will drive it flat out for extended times, even on an autobahn, and never at 180kph, especially not on Ko2 which is max rated at 180kph. While I completely agree that the fitment of wheel nuts is very French, it is not a deal breaker for the vehicle's designed use. The imbalance would not be noticed on the Qoodnadatta track even when it's in good condition and you can get to 100kph. You're going to pick up much more mud on the inside of the rim when you hit the muddy bits (almost always encountered) than a slightly heavier wheel nut.

You are most lucky to get that as a ‘commercial vehicle’. In the UK it has to be fitted with steel panels instead of the rear side windows plus the compromised rear seats but, most critically, a 1000kg+ payload. The Grenadier falls down badly on that last point and therefore does not qualify for VAT or tax concessions in the UK. As a consequence I have cancelled my Grenadier order and have ordered another Ford Ranger pickup for collection next month some time. My business is VAT qualified and I do use the vehicle mostly for business and after claiming the VAT back on Ranger [not legal on GrenadierUK] there is a full £25,000 cost saving with the Ranger. There is more passenger room in the Ranger than the ‘commercial’ Grenadier and for right hand drive, a far more comfortable driving position with no cheese slice in the floor. The bed has an electric cover and it can carry a ton and pull a three point five trailer. It can also be run as in four wheel drive on road but it locks the centre diff in low range by default unfortunately. Similar power to weight ratio even though the Ranger has only a 2.0 diesel engine. It may surprise some but the ride and handling of the latest Ranger is very acceptable and unlike traditional pickups of this type while the steering is rack and pinion and great on and off-road. Remember I already have one Ranger and have run it hard for nine years already

@@Cous1nJack My vehicle is not a toy. It has to work and it is a cost I would rather do without. It has to be fit for purpose and economically viable. In the UK, the Grenadier ‘commercial’ does not qualify as a commercial vehicle for tax purposes due to its rather small payload. If it did qualify, the order would not have been cancelled as I was willing to pay up to a £10k premium. A UK £25k premium is ridiculous though and puts the UK Grenadier ‘commercial’ five seater with reduced rear legroom, reduced speed limit and panelled sides at a similar price point to a full spec Defender X HSE. No contest if that was the kind of vehicle I wanted. The Defender wins easily. Obviously rules are different in Germany, assuming people have actually checked with their tax authority.

@@M0RMY Not in the UK it’s not. It just isn’t. To satisfy UK’s tax office HMRC, the rear sides MUST be blanked off and the payload must exceed 1000kgs. Even the DVLA licensing authority as distinct from tax authority, will not allow a vehicle to have commercial status fully glazed, otherwise there would be many glazed vans and Land Rover would not bother with their ‘commercial’ [Hardtop they call them] Defender variants. They do not and cannot make fully glazed five seat versions be commercial vehicles.

Great spotting Christian re the wiring. In 2016 we were coming south from Cape York on a very remote track and my friend in his brand new Toyota 200 series had a stick flick up and took out the r/h DPF wiring and damaged the DPF itself. The instrument panel was a Christmas tree 🎄 all the coloured lights you could dream of, but it still drove so we kept going the 1000k’s to Cairns. The fix was $1200 at the dealer and there were 2 engineers from Tojo Japan there at the time to evaluate problems with off roading the 200, we believe they learned something. My 07, 76Series doesn’t have DPF’S 👍🏿 Keep up the great work guys, your videos are first class. Love from OZ 🇦🇺

Wow, that IS a big car! Your Discovery looks small. Nice though 👍🏼❤ Somehow, I am more interested in Edgar's and your explaination regarding with the tight 2nd seat space in relation with tax (utility vehicle rule). This maybe explained why my old car, Opel Blazer DOHC LT, had the 2nd seat so tight, while it has much more cargo space behind. Maybe. Cheers, AD.
@obertan_1
@obertan_1 Жыл бұрын
It's easy: If it has an "N1" categorization in the car documents, it's an "LKW", if this is "M1" it is a passenger car (higher tax). The categorization is, as Christian explained, dependent on the ratio between cargo- and passenger-space and is a fixed parameter from the maker, i.e. INEOS. The Grenadier "Utility" version is in Germany an "N1" category. By "Verordnung", the authorities do not any more have the option of a personal assessment of the nature / look and fell of the car (Anmutung ...) but are bindingly obliged to what is printed in the car documents. The N1 version thus has the rear seats installed more forward ny some centimeters (some say seven, others say nine). The mounting threads for the more aft position are unused in the utility (but exist).

Good epidode. I have worked in the automotive industry for over 30 years, and I would never buy a new model in it's first year of series production from any manufacturer. The Grenadier is a new model, Ineos are new to building cars and the Hambach factory has been completely overhauled and refurbished following the take over by Ineos from Smart. In addition, I don’t know where Edgar purchased his Grenadier, but a lot of the dealers are also new to the new car business. Regardless of how much testing and development work was carried out, there are bound to be teething problems! Land Rover had over 50 years experience when the Disco 3 and 4 were new!

A particularly exciting and unexpected episode, if a little short. I’m expecting my Grenadier sometime In September (scheduled build date is July, and I’m told it takes 6-8wks from production to collection), so I was very interested to hear your initial thoughts and impressions. Agreed about those dreadful locking wheel nuts. That’s a waste of £65 for a set of wheels that only a Grenadier owner is likely to steal. The exposed cabling underneath definitely looks like it needs some attention. Hopefully cable ties and heat shrink wrap my tidy them up a bit. Looking forward to a more in depth and hopefully full length episode on the Grenadier, so I can fully enjoy my bowl of ice cream and fresh English Strawberries.

However, before writing off the vehicle as dead in the water, I’d want a better look myself and see where the exact positioning of those wires are and what they’re for. It’s all too easy to jump to conclusions, and regardless what the naysayers preach, I’d also be taking into account what Magna Steyr and the rest of the design team have produced and why. For a company responsible for the Pinzgauer, Unimog, Hafflinger and numerous other off road projects, I’d be more than surprised if they suddenly decide, “leave those wires dangling Helmutt, they’ll be fine!”

The wheel locking nut is not so nobody steals the rims, it’s an upsell for the dealer. Parts sell the locks nuts to the service and service charge to fit them 💰

Update from my previous comment. I finally had a proper test drive in a Grenadier today, on various roads, from twisty country lanes, A roads, dual carriageway and finally motorway. The drive exceeded my expectations; smooth and quiet, as well as plenty of acceleration from the Diesel engine. We spent a good hour driving around, stopping & starting as well as going through all the controls and features. Before going out and whilst waiting for my authorised Grenadier rep to finish his phone call, I crawled under the display model in the showroom and looked for the loose wires hanging down that you pointed out. There was nothing there that I could find that in any way looked like it might cause a problem when off road. I was underneath for long enough that a member of staff asked me if I was ok! I’m curious as to why Edgar’s had this. Is his a petrol or diesel model? I also checked every Grenadier in the lot for dodgy rear mud flap/ arches and found all 15 vehicles to be fine. I guess they must have all been night shift models. I brought home with me one of their 1:18th scale models, and found it not only to be left hand drive, but that one of the rear panel windows was loose. However, no loose wiring underneath. The steering wasn’t as good as the demonstrator though.

Lol, not even I went under a vehicle in a showroom with staff around. Well done. Pretty sure that there are small improvements introduced in production as they move forward and the workers get faster and better. Thanks for the update. Christian

> I’m curious as to why Edgar’s had this. Is his a petrol or diesel model? It's a diesel. But that's not the point. It's a Jean/Pierre problem: INEOS doesn't seem to have set the standards sufficiently yet. But since my car is still missing some accessories that are currently not available (e.g. running boards, camping table), I'll have to go to my rep anyway and will then bring a to-do list for him to work through. But I don't consider that surprising with such a new company and car.

@@obertan_1 yes, quite likely a Jean/Pierre problem, although I believe the production line teams were inherited along with the Hambach plant, and are regarded as an excellent workforce. I guess training up the Quality Control Department is still ongoing. Speaking with my Grenadier supplier, he too confirmed that side steps and folding tables are still awaiting delivery, but that rock sliders are available. My order was for the rock sliders and table. Hopefully by the time my Grenadier arrives (maybe September), accessories will be more readily available.

Lovely looking vehicle, it's just a great pity that Tata industries couldn't be arsed to make the new defender that way. Christian your underbody assessment is spot on, those cables would be ripped out when going over really rough terrain obstacles. The routing of the cables is nonsensical and just asking for trouble.

There are no Land Cruisers in Germany for a review. Toyota Germany does not admit that they have a big SUV. We are not able to review a LC, believe we have tried. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera

For the locking nuts. As an Aussie with an 80 series landcruiser...yeah they will steal those tires. And that underside. Yeah I wouldn't take that offroad here without some underbody protection, wiring management and waterproofing. Also a snorkel is good to have for any water crossing and also for cleaner/cooler air. Infact most snorkels aren't water forwarding safe and only for cleaner air intake.

Those black still rims looks good and badass on the vehicle. Ineos made the right decision by ignoring low profile tires or alloy rims as options.

Vast car, I didn't appreciate how big it was until it was sat on your drive. 13m turning circle! And fixed springs - shocking omission, for one the rear loading deck height looks huge, Vera would need ramps... Different styles of locking wheel nuts are available and the wheels can be balanced on the car of course. Overall looks impressive though, not least because it rivals the Disco 3 and 4 for space - vital. What were Landrover thinking! Early teething troubles plague all new cars (oil pumps?) but it all looks fairly minor and fixable. I wish Grenadier and it's new owner all the very best, I'll keep my fingers crossed for them both! Nice video.
