The Inevitable Downfall Of The Farrelly Brothers Comedy

In the 90's, The Farrelly Brothers were the kings of comedy. Films like Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, and There's Something About Mary all dominated box offices, and fans everywhere were obsessed. Though after a few missteps it seems the Farrelly Brothers had lost the magic. With follow ups to Dumb and Dumber, and attempts at bringing 90's comedy to the 2000's, each new release would do worse than the last. The Farrelly Brothers would eventually split and focus on their own projects, but like the Coen Brothers are they better together or apart?

I remember seeing dumb and dumber in theaters back in'94 with my mom and my brother. Our family is a little astranged and doesn't really talk as much as they should , but I do have fond memories of watching that movie as a family and laughing hysterically and enjoying each other's company. 94 Seems like a lifetime ago.

In a lot of ways, it’s society. Sure, “Shallow Hal” does poke fun at people with weight issues, but the message of the movie is that people truly aren’t skin deep. Hal also saw gorgeous people as butt ass ugly, but we never acknowledge that in the conversation because it’s damning for those who call the movie offensive. Then again, those who truly called the movie offensive probably didn’t even actually watch it.
@clarkmichaels822

The movie still equates 'good' and 'bad' with 'pretty' and 'ugly'. It just reverses it. People who are nice are physically attractive to Hal, people who are not nice are ugly. He still goes by their appearance as a way to judge them.

Lmao. What an awful take. I don’t understand why the concept of comedy moving forward and being not funny anymore always leads with some boomer complaining everyone is offended by everything. Right after this period came sex drive and band camp movies well into the 2000s so no people still liked raunchy offensive comedy just not these

Still one of my favorite scenes in all of comedy, from Kingpin: Roy, "Get up. We gotta go! Be very quiet." Ishmael, "What's going on Mr. Munson?" Roy, "Be QUIET." Roy slips and falls in the dark motel room and says, "Ah! I think I tore my sack!" Ishmael, "Are you okay, Mr. Munson?" Roy, "What did I JUST say?" Ishmael, "'Ah, I think I tore my sack?'" Roy, "No! Be quiet!" It's so silly and immature, but good Lord, that scene had my sides hurting from laughing so hard! I still blurt out "Ah, I think I tore my sack" if I slip or fall down around the house to this day. Thankfully, I'm pleased to report that I have not, in fact, ever torn anything of the sort, but that one line has become part of the lexicon of my life, haha.

I was looking forward to it. I really enjoyed the first film as a kid/preteen. It's pretty goofy and full of absurd and stupid comedy. The sort of film if released today would be hammered into dust by critics and viewers. So I was not really expecting much from a sequel. All I wanted and expected was some of that goofy comedy. Two guys who end up in awkward comedic situations because they have no social skills and aren't self aware, coupled with the inability to understand the world around them and how society functions. I got plenty of that. Enough to be satisfied. The rest of the film was exactly what I expected from a comedy film released in the last 10 years. So I wasn't bothered that much by the typical Hollywood schlock.

My top 10 favorite comedy films: 10 Old Scool, 9 Me Myself and Irene, 8 Austin Powers, 7, Anchorman, 6 The Naked Gun, 5 Stepbrothers, 4 There is Something about Mary, 3 The 40 year old Virgin, 2 Dumb and Dumber, 1 King pin. Comedy films were my favorite genre when they were still allowed to be made. The Farrely Brothers gave me many wonderful evenings in the 90s. I watched Dumb and Dumber, King Pin and There is something about Mary almost every week and I can quote them. Wonderfully crude humor without taking into account all kinds of delicate souls. Unfortunately, those times are over and nowadays I have to content myself with superhero films with jokes like Deadpool.

It's really difficult, especially in comedy, to maintain an high peak without changing. So yes, they were victim of their own success and their own style. They shaped the style of "modern" comedy and at the same time, it being so extreme, it was impossible to keep it without repeating itself, and "jumping the shark". In fact, nobody can beat the Farrelly's 1994-2000 at modern comedy. Not even themselves. The worst of the later films must be Hall Pass, because it tries to blend serious emotion with the fucked up humor, failing miserably. The balance of Mary or Irene was impossible to repeat.

God have we got it soo good now a days that we actually have to look for things to be offended by…I hear liberal mainstream media talking about how women can’t do this or that.. All film makers have a golden period. And comedy is hard to do well. And styles of comedy come and go. Having a number of smash comedies is better than most others will ever manage. After the Farrelly brothers run of hits there were a few in the noughties like road trip, old school, dodgeball, wedding crashers, and then probably borat and Superbad but there hasn’t been much since then.

One of the big psychological elements of comedy is, Novelty. If something something surprises us/haven't seen before we have an autosomal reaction to laugh (same reaction as fear). They nailed that in early productions, but the same sight gags and strange behaviors became predictable and just not funny. I think producing a movie for 17 mil and grossing 250mil is a lifetime achievment of bold genius. They should have stopped right there. (Kingpin is still funny)

These movies only work if you have a Jim Carrey, or a Jack Black, a Ben Stiller, a Chris Tucker, Zach Galifianakis. There are good comedians out there but they would do bad in a Jim Carrey type of movie. Only one that comes to mind right now that maybe has that type of innate slapstick physicality would be Preacher Lawson. Unfortunately Hollywood is being very slow at noticing him.

Ugg... Shallow Hal was fine, and only offends the same 4 weirdos that are overly offended by everything else. It's not as big of a classic as the other, simply because it just wasent as good, creative or well timed.

I wonder was the quality of comedic actors an element in their rise and fall. You showed a lot of Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller at the height of their power. All of the films you named that I didn't recognise didn't have massive comedic presences like that attached.

It was a story where the odds were quite against them, but they thrived. In an interview style screenwriting book, they talk about on Dumb and Dumber, the studio and financing production company had such low faith in them, they were sure they were going to be replaced within the first days of filming (They won't name who, but it's said they even had an airline ticket on standby for another Director from LA to Colorado). D&D was a success (did very well on the rental and VHS sales market too), but Kingpin flop, thus they thought Something Mary was going to be their last big film, so they really went "all out" and that's what make it a hit!

There's Something About Mary, dumb and Dumber and Kingpin are three of my all time favorite comedy movies. I do think they were very 'of the era' though; much like Jim Abrahams and the Zucker brothers were in the 80s. Their brand of comedy just didn't resonate with the generation following the one they were mostly trying to appeal to.

I don't think comedy in the mid to late 2000's were really any different than 1994-2000 but Farrellys just weren't making good movies anymore. These R rated edgy comedies have crossed generations and I think most people want them back but Hollywood has gone woke.

I am a huge fan of the Farelly Brothers. I was a teenager when Jim Carrey broke out and I was way on board the Jim Carrey ride and dumb and dumber was one of the best things of my teenage years. But then so was there something about Mary. But kingpin I consider to be the funniest movie I've ever seen in my life.

Regarding Shallow Hal, like it or not, it was a hit despite the criticism, making 3 1/2 times budget. I'd argue it's the one-two punch of Stuck on You and The Heartbreak Kid that did them in (and Fever Pitch despite being an okay enough movie, not being a hit) followed by the Three Stooges.

Shalow Hal was a great movie but not appreciated enough. And it wasn't offensive, the movie was actually quite brave deciding to talk about certain things in relationships that mostly no one dared to talk about: physical issues, prejudices about appearances and the ability of putting those appearances aside, the silent issues about being overweight, and how it can affect a relationship.

I know they are deleted or ignored, but I liked The Green Book and loved The Champions. While not deep, I thought there was more to The Green Book than people give it credit for (though it probably didn't deserve the awards it got), and I thought The Champions was a simple but honest story about people with intellectual disabilities, and one of my favorite movies of 2023.

The fim avoids noticing the xharecters as out of place makes it so much funnier. Something about Mary and her black dad helping Ben stiller with the zipper fucken great scene.
