When I was at university, my tutor held an annual house party each December which featured his home-made icecreams, divided into "safe" (individually labeled and relatively conventional) and "unsafe" (totally anonymous) categories. I'm pretty sure one of the ones I sampled was broad bean, but that's the only one I remember now (it was a couple of decades ago, and I paid more attention to my date than to the catering...)

To your point about these being someone’s favorite flavors: the Jeni’s wild berry lavender is my son’s go to ice cream. Not for me but he loves it. If you ever have an opportunity to go to a Jeni’s brick and mortar location, they make waffle cones and waffle bowls in house for their ice cream and it is 100% worth a trip

I love having my own ice cream maker. One of my favorite discoveries has been lavender ice cream, but I've also made cranberry sorbet, ginger bread, butter rum, and mulberry. (Plus the standard ones, of course)

Dan is correct, the crumbs are an issue, which is why astronaut ice cream has never been consumed in outer space. The name was just a marketing ploy.

Dan is correct about the astronaut ice cream. No one ever took it into space because the crumbs are a problem. I read all about it in "Packing for Mars", as well as what early astronauts really did eat, which was even more unappealing.

You get interviewed about your life experiences and is generally a very interesting interview involving some of your favorite foods. Think Hot Ones with your favorite foods putting you into a comfort mode instead of hot chicken that's putting you into fight or flight mode🙂. Your son may be familiar with them, hopefully in a good way.

My favorite weird ice cream is Jeni's Everything Bagel. It's lightly sweet cream cheese ice cream with a buttery streusel, sesame and poppy seeds, and crunchy bits of onion and garlic. It totally should not work, but it's a reminder that alliums are actually sort of sweet. Not an everyday flavor, but one I buy a couple times a year. My favorite is a Whole Foods brand: black sesame with toasted coconut. Which I sometimes drizzle with chili crisp. Ok, I'm weird.

I've had a delicious farmhouse cheddar ice cream, though it was one component of a more complex dessert. It was great, but I don't think I'd want a bowl of it just by itself. Also, unlike the mac n' cheese ice cream, there was no vanilla, and there were no bits of frozen macaroni.

My favorite flavor of Ice Cream ever is at a place called the Penny Ice Creamery: Strawberry and pink peppercorn!!! It blew my mind, and unfortunately, I live nowhere near it, and it is very seasonal.

Lactose free doesn't necessarily mean it's plant based. There are ways to break down the lactose in dairy to where most people can consume it even if they are lactose intolerant and it will pass as lactose free in accordance with food labeling laws. i don't know where the limit is in the US, and I know the US isn't big on producing these lactose free products, but they are big in Sweden and I think all over Scandinavia/The Nordics, and in Sweden there has to be less than 0,01 grams of lactose per 100g of food (or less than 0,01% if you will) for it to be considered lactose free, and there is a decent selection of lactose free dairy products, from milk, butter, cream, yoghurt and sour cream, to ice creams and cottage cheese, feta and cream cheeses (most regular hard cheeses matured for even a few months naturally falling under the 0.01% limit), and even some milk chocolate. My mom developed lactose intolerance about 15 years ago and I've seen the progression go from "low-lactose" milk, margarine, and soy ice cream, to basically being able to live a completely normal life basically never eating any lactase enzyme medicine and still eating all the dairy that the Nordic kitchen is know for, though in the past few years new products have tapered off in frequency. I guess they have most of what they can sell for a profit by now, even if more Ice Cream flavors and more cream-based sweets could still be desirable, but I also think the recent increase in people going Vegan has led to companies focusing more on vegan products, which are by nature dairy free, even if they (according to me) rarely tase as good as real dairy.
