Lex's Maze isn't even a MAZE! The fiend. "Follow this line I have drawn in the snow by pissing" is the next logical step. Interesting that you uncovered the bobbins back story. The Titus logo makes me thing of Bubsy 3D which is reason enough to avoid them...
@Meshamu Жыл бұрын
Kinda crazy that DC restricted Titus so much that they made the game into total crap, but now they let Superman absolutely eviscerate people in those DC/Mortal Kombat things. Quite a change isn't it?
@carn9507 Жыл бұрын
Well, at least in Injustice it's a different Superman. One who turned into a murderer. This game is based on the really good 90s cartoon show, mainly aimed at kids (but written in a way that could be enjoyed by adults as it didn't talk down to kids).
@fionordequester6748 Жыл бұрын
Assuming that's all true, of course. The Caen brothers aren't exactly known for their skill as CEOs, as their string of financial problems, legal troubles, and other terrible games can tell you. I also find it odd that WB wouldn't just tell Titus to take a hike, if they truly had so little faith in them...
@Spike-Prime Жыл бұрын
I feel sorry for Titus on this game. They got SO screwed by idiot Warner Bros executives. Apparently Superman was not allowed to do literally anything unless Titus employees could produce a Superman comic demonstrating that, yes, he would do that. And the virtual world was a late addition because Warner Bros didn't want Superman to cause any "real" collateral damage when he fought? I guess they REALLY changed their minds on that when Man of Steel came out.
@carn9507 Жыл бұрын
yeeeah but also... judging by Titus' other games, it's not like they had a track record of classics.
@Spike-Prime Жыл бұрын
@@carn9507 I don't disagree, but I can't help but empathise with the ridiculous, and frankly idiotic, dictates from dumbass executives who were acting out because they sold the game rights to a smaller game developer. If they'd let them make the game originally intended, we'd at least be able to critique it fairly if nothing else. The broken game at hand is squarely WB's fault.

Poor Superman 64. It will never know peace. Personally, I think the idea of a villain forcing Superman into a virtual world is a good idea for a video game, just not for the reasons it was done here. Superman is a notoriously difficult character to write a story for since he's so powerful that it's hard to put him up against a challenging villain. However, put Superman in a virtual world where his powers may not work and you level the playing field. Anyway, it's unfortunate that the game was made the way it was and I also feel bad for the people who had to make this game under such restrictions. Many potentially great games have been killed this way. 😢

IIRC it's actually canon that Superman picks things up using telekinesis rather than brute strength, which is why he can e.g. lift an oil tanker from one end without the metal crumpling in his hands. So that weird pose lifting the cardboard box wasn't shoddy animation, it was actually a very clever nod to the lore!

something like that, yeah. There have been various differing reasons as to why he's even capable of flight too, some similar to that

Actually, about the glasses... I remember forgetting my glasses at home one time while I was working in retail, and I swear, something like 6 people approached me that day asking if I was a new hire despite having worked in the store five days a week for over two years. It's a real thing, the second you take your glasses off, people just don't recognise you.
@davidstone1293 Жыл бұрын
The same applies in reverse. I remember working staff at one of those comic cons and there was an actor that always wore dark glasses at his table signing autographs. I would see him take off the glasses whenever he wanted to go around the convention, and nobody would recognize him. People who stood in line for his autograph literally had no idea he was standing next to them in line to buy a hotdog.

If you want to, I can recommend Sasha from the youtube channel Casually Comics to explore some of the back issues of Superman from the golden and silver ages, along with Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane and Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. If you can get past the misogyny of the writing in the Lois issues (it can be so bad it's hilarious, like a train wreck) they're pretty fun to explore with her as a guide. She's got a whole playlist of a recurring plot point where she'll marry anyone else at the drop off a hat as a way to try to make Superman notice her.

16:54 - Man, I feel so bad for the artists who worked on that comic. Imagine having a passion for writing or drawing or both, honing your skills your whole life, dreaming of turning your passion into your job, struggling to make ends meet working on smaller projects while getting yelled at about meeting deadlines by your editors, but it's all worth it because one day, DC hires you to work on a Superman project... Finally! Recognition! Money! Fame! You get to work for one of the big two American comic book publishers AND it's on their flagship franchise! One that you grew up with and probably inspired you to become an artist in the first place... and it ends up being tied to THIS dreg.
@WannabeMarysue Жыл бұрын
I think the TV show and tie-in comic series (not the comic bundled with the game) were generally well recieved. There's speedrunners of this game for some reason. They ran it at a GDQ, and the high level Superman 64 Tech is an alright time. There's a way to play the ring sections on easy mode (which has no rings on that mode), while still reaching the endgame (which isn't usually avalible on easy mode). The end of the game's story involves Superman escaping the virtual world due to a bug. A game this buggy also includes a faux computer bug as a narrative device. I don't think the game could have ended in a funnier way.

a classic case of corporate mismanagement and lincensor meddling ruining a game. at some point they basically said "sod it, we'll ship what we've got" to be fair a superman game is a difficult idea, you are invincible and can fly. that's like most games with a cheat code on. Maybe with modern hardware a game could work where you, as superman have to pull of the rescure such as catchng a falling passenger plane and landing it safely in the city without any casualties, or accidentally bodying into a skyscraper. these videos are great. you are so entertaining.

I remember playing Superman on the Atari VCS (2600) and it was far more playable than the N64 version. You did have to snog Lois Lane if you were hit by Kryptonite satellites that Lexx (Autocopter) Luthor had released into the sky. A kiss got your superpowers back. Actually, that sounds a bit Freudian now I think about it. You should definitely check that game out. There was also a Superman game on the ZX Spectrum as I recall. I think Tynesoft released it. Maybe worth a look. Although I never played it. Great video Octavius. You are always very entertaining and fun to watch. Thank goodness Titus didn't do a Lord of the Rings video game.

I remember a Superman game for the Atari 8bit that I could never pass the first stage where you had to fly around aligning mirrors to laser the single enemy (Zod? Nuclear Man?) who would be trying to laser you back. It had a very nice loading screen, so there's that at least, but the game itself was pretty terrible.

I got to play the game for free because I worked at a video rental place, we could take games home under the guise of testing them out, we just had to bring them back the next day. So I didn't lose any money at all finding out how bad this game was. As a fan of the comics, I probably would have just bought it if I hadn't. I was also then able to steer kids away by telling them to avoid it, and sometimes they even listened. Apparently the management at DC didn't want the deal to go through for the game because the previous managers had ordered it, not them, but couldn't just cancel it or they'd owe money or some such. So that's why they intentionally hampered the production.

I have read an interview with one of the developers somewhere. It has never been mentioned in any of the other many videos covering this game, so I've always wondered if I imagined it. Anyway, the dev was shown the finished game, and was bemused by the rings, stating that they were not part of the design, and were something like an optional training mission to get used to the controls.
@eternalfailure4081 Жыл бұрын
The other thing is, just how many times developers wanted to make GTA3. A huge open world, multiple missions, cars, people! And were met with crippling system limitations. This game was 1999, GTA3 was only 2001. ...but I suppose that is why GTA is such a jugganaut. Even now, you see executives pitching ideas of a game like GTA5, but with some other setting, and you can imagine them turning to the devs and saying "yeah, so just make a game like GTA5, but with X" as if you can *just* make a game like the biggest gaming franchise on a whim

This game was the bane of EVERYBODY with an N64 renting games back in the day. Every time you would go to the store the box would be there on the shelf taunting you. You would have heard the rumors. But eventually you would be too curious and you would give in and rent it and then your weekend was just ruined. If you had more pocket money and a way to go back to the store to try and rent something actually playable. Everything else had already been rented.

You brought up this game since My Adventures With Superman got announced, right? I know Superman 64 isn't so good, but I am down to watch MAWSM when it hits Toonami in my country this year. Also, you can disable ring mazes by playing on Easy level, but you'll get the bad ending like on Normal level. Strangely, you can't play all of the stages and get the good ending unless you bump up the difficulty level to Superman level. This isn't good game design, and I wished "Easy mode mockery" wasn't a thing here. In Easy mode, outdoor missions start the moment the player approaches a 3D Superman logo, as the compass just points to it due to the rings being absent.

Okay, Count Duckula plush on the shelf just raised Octavius's cuteness factor even higher. Superman is hard to make a good game about. First of all because he's way OP, and video game protagonists usually start off weak and then gain power. Secondly, and this affects Superman 64 in particular, Warner Bros. is going to have a lot yo say about how the character is depicted and what his attributes are. So you can't exactly nerf him, or make him conform to actually fun gameplay mechanics, without hearing from Time Warner Discovery's lawyers.
