The harder difficulties probably only did horizontal scrolling because the NES technically could only do horizontal or vertical scrolling not both. In order to do both you needed some technical trickery that tended to junk from the right side on the left side of the screen like in Super Mario Bros. 3

Another thing that is really frustrating about this is that Wally/Waldo can be in totally different colours, which makes him a lot harder to find, especially on Hard, where the cursor is also smaller than in the other two difficulty settings (as if the game wasn’t frustrating enough).

I was surprised you titled the video based on the US name! "Waldo" isn't a name with any major connotations I can think of, but it's a very uncommon, odd-sounding name that really fits the eccentricity of the character. Over here if you ever hear "waldo" you either think of this character or of some industrial equipment. But then, over here his evil twin was Odlaw. What is he there?

As an aside, a 'Waldo machine' (a phrase coined by kinky fascist hippy Robert A Heinlein) is a remote controlled 'hand' or similar means of manipulating something from a distance. Arguably, then, all keyboards, joysticks, Nintendo Wii/Joycon weirdness and game pads are also Waldo machines.
