Everybody asks "Where's Waldo?" nobody ever asks "How's Waldo?" and it just makes the dude sad. It only makes him want to hide more!

Thing is, unlike any of these games it's actually creative. And loud and obnoxious enough to not be boring. I could have seen them localizing that and making it one of those Chuck E. Cheese tickets for prizes type games.

There's also the Waldo-Odlaw reversal thing. 'Yllaw' just sounds welsh, and thus, far too terrifying and eldritch for children.

To be fair, with the available resolution on the NES, at that minuscule scale, it is a marvel of art direction that any distinguishing features on a character are visible AT ALL. That’s actually fucking impressive, especially for a team of 3.

Fun story: The last time I had a go at a Where's Wally book was just before I went for an operation as a kid. The doctors gave me a Where's Wally book to take my mind of them injecting me with anaesthetic.

The harder difficulties probably only did horizontal scrolling because the NES technically could only do horizontal or vertical scrolling not both. In order to do both you needed some technical trickery that tended to junk from the right side on the left side of the screen like in Super Mario Bros. 3

Another thing that is really frustrating about this is that Wally/Waldo can be in totally different colours, which makes him a lot harder to find, especially on Hard, where the cursor is also smaller than in the other two difficulty settings (as if the game wasn’t frustrating enough).

I was surprised you titled the video based on the US name! "Waldo" isn't a name with any major connotations I can think of, but it's a very uncommon, odd-sounding name that really fits the eccentricity of the character. Over here if you ever hear "waldo" you either think of this character or of some industrial equipment. But then, over here his evil twin was Odlaw. What is he there?

As an aside, a 'Waldo machine' (a phrase coined by kinky fascist hippy Robert A Heinlein) is a remote controlled 'hand' or similar means of manipulating something from a distance. Arguably, then, all keyboards, joysticks, Nintendo Wii/Joycon weirdness and game pads are also Waldo machines.

It's interesting to see all the different names Wally has in different countries, such as Ubaldo, Wahle and Vili. I think I had only one actual Wally book but several similar ones that worked along those lines.
