Edit: thank you for introducing me to the phrase "tank controls". Back in the 80s one of my favourite games on the Spectrum was Quazatron. It was in 3D and you used the diagonals on the joystick to move. Twenty-odd years later there was a PC remake which I tried out. Instead of going in the direction you moved, you had to rotate the robot to point the way you wanted to go, THEN press Forward. I gave up in a couple of minutes. Tank controls.

I had that weird PS1 Namco controller that twisted in the middle. It was made for racing games and actually worked OK for the time. also a great stress reliever when a game annoyed you as you could literally wring your controller.

Good to see ya back. I remember that controller well(ish)...attempted to use the PC version as a cheap spaceball controller for 3d modelling and VR work in the 90's. Was shite. Proper desktop space mice controllers are pretty good though for architectural flythroughs. Same principle just better execution. Needs 1st person and anchor it to a desk and decent drivers.

Welcome back, love! But on-topic, though: I’ve actually SEEN this controller in person at a used games store before. I THINK the manufacturer of this peripheral thought something including a trackball was a good idea (at the time) because the PSX had that limited $700+ package with Net Yaroze and the ability to develop and run your own homebrew software (from my understanding of what I read about it YEARS AGO anyway, since I’ve NEVER actually seen one of those out in the wild). Plus, the PS1 had a FAIR AMOUNT of ports from the PC that still retained their “point-and-click” controls so having a controller with a trackball COULD POTENTIALLY make those type of games A LOT EASIER to play.

This thing with its several degrees of freedom kind of reminds me of the original Fairchild Channel F controller, which was basically a combination of a digital joystick and an analog paddle all in one unit. But the form factor seems rather odd and awkward for the PS

I love looking back at the late 90s wild west era of 3D graphics. Everyone in the hardware industry was trying to come up with the 3D equivalent of the mouse as a new standard control method that could be as ubiquituous as the mouse pointer had become for graphic user interfaces in the early Windows era. A whole mad bunch of wildly unusable peripherals got drummed up in breathless press releases and hype articles, only to vanish into the landfill mere months later.

I can actually see a purpose to this ball. On the 1999 Sega Naomi arcade system, there were games that used a ball, namely Monkey Ball and the excellent Out-Trigger. Out-Trigger was basically a colorful arcade version of Quake done by no other than the Sega AM2 studio. It is super hard to emulate, because the mouse directs the 4 direction keys all at once. All the Sega Naomi gun games use a mouse, including The House of the Dead 2.

They had the PS4 Wipeout as a monthly game for PS+, and it's really dope in VR. Like most PSVR games you gotta start up the VR before loading the game, but when you do, it loads the main menu in VR space. It's also fun to play, but when it did that I thought it was cool. Usually it's just a logo, even in VR.
