Just ten years ago the very top KZbinrs on the platform were mostly filming out of modest apartments, doing average skits, and living lives pretty similar to you or I.
Almost all of them had regular day jobs and posted to the internet because they found it fun, or at the very most because it could earn them a little extra side money.
Contrast that with today where some Influencers have the same reach, notoriety and income as top athletes, singers and movie stars.

I call it the "Influencer Paradox." The influencer starts out as an ordinary person posting about something they're passionate about--a hobby, a subject, an activity. Viewers are drawn by the authenticity; the realness of the influencer and the honesty of their opinions. Then the money starts rolling, and the influencer goes "pro," turning themselves into yet another commercialized product. Their authenticity is lost, and their viewers move on, and the money stops. It's truly a rare breed who manage to avoid this pitfall.

Not as much trust lost as being a multi-millionaire and dumping and pumping a crypto very overtly to make like half a million. I feel with that, Audible, NordVPN, etc, etc, the consumers also know the creators don't believe in the product. Most of the ones promoting those products are with an audience of like 100k to 1 million in size, so they do need that money if they aren't getting it through Patreon. It still will take away from the message in products they do believe in though, because there would be no way to tell if they like the product, or they need the money.

It’s crazy to think that there are people who are getting rich by literally existing and having a fan base of people who just like them. They don’t play a sport, they don’t make music, act, or create any type of art or provide a service, they just brand their life and people pay for their lifestyle because of who they are. At some point I find making millions through art is ridiculous as well. People could literally spend years finding the cure to something for nothing but breadcrumbs. All the people who keep the society going earn breadcrumbs. Not saying art (music, acting, etc.) is not needed, but we could live without it. For example if ONLY nurses would stop working, not even the doctors, it would create chaos, and so on. People see no value in other people's jobs.

But that said, we need a social shift so that people understand that an "influencers" job is always at least in part to sell you stuff.

Sounds great morally but the reality is different. I'm a professional artist and whenever I make educational content few people follow and share in comparison to selling that "romantic artist lifestyle" posts & reels. People are too overburdened by reality that they are starved for that fantasy. I didn't accept this at first, but again and again human nature proved itself. Plus, these creators have bills to pay & need following and "passion" isn't enough most of the time. It isn't a black and white situation either. I don't support lies & portraying a fake reality, but I understand why it is happening over and over again. Any creative field has this problem whether it's beauty, fashion, art, music, sculpting.. etc.

That's really how it started out. Most of the orginal youtubers were just enjoying a hobby or did it to relieve stress. Mighty car mods has been around since 2007 and they did it because they loved cars and modding them. It also helped them grow their music career. Markiplier did to relieve stress after he was done with his college classes. Those two examples are youtubers that did it because they liked doing it and it helped them. Now current youtibers do it for the money. Most don't even care for the content itself. It has become the equivalent of "I want to be a doctor/lawyer because it pays alot". Not even thinking if that's actually the job you want to do. Eventually the bottom is going to fall out and this form of work will come to a hult. The ad revenue has gone down because alot of people don't care for what they're selling. Most skip the ad anyways. Not to mention that the creator dosen't even care about the ad product, so it shows how much trust there is to buying it. Next is the market is too overflooded. Not everyone can do this. It needs to go back to the way it was. I have more respect for a person that actually likes doing what they film vs some person just looking to make money.

I remember when I first saw KZbin there were no commercials, then the channels that were around were not selling merchandise or doing commercials for a company. Then they started charging to stop seeing commercials, but then the influencers started doing their own commercials for companies.

I don't support bombarding the viewer with ads. However, realistically speaking, having no income from KZbin isn't sustainable when life becomes more demanding (university, work license, work, marriage, kids, taking care of parents.. etc). That means only teenagers will be able to keep up & produce good content and they'll have to stop (no money) around uni time. I'm an artist, and if I didn't get paid from ads or online content, I would be working in a job that relates nothing to art. That's how life works. Before I could do art without getting paid because I had time and my parents paid for my expenses. But now that I am older, I have to get paid or I'm forced to do something else. Hence, not letting the world enjoy what I produce.

i’ve been slowly weaning my self from tv/movies and social media because i’ve become hyper aware of how often we are being sold to. I’ve mainly been consuming media through youtube and podcasts, but now all the ad reads are becoming too much. It’s very frustrating that entertainers, whether movie starts, sports stars, or internet personalities, are constantly trying to get money through sponsors and trying to sell things to us. This type of “work” really doesn’t contribute to society. It’s very frustrating for working/middle class to see these people rolling in dough for basically doing nothing.

As someone who runs an e-commerce company that employs US citizens I need these influencers to help advertise my brand, otherwise people will just turn to cheap Chinese bullshit on Amazon with potentially harmful chemicals in it and made from plastics that aren’t sustainable. So it’s not all bad.

Yes, I strongly agree with you. I liked to watch those early KZbinrs, being just normal people doing videos for fun. Then when some of them blew up and got rich, and started to do vlogs about their lives, i just felt utterly stupid for wasting so much of my time watching them tell me "hey, look how disgustingly rich I've become for you watching me for hours doing fun stuff!", while they show me their unbelievable amount of subscribers and their enormous expensive houses.

I was literally just told by a CEO last week that he bought an ad on a championship football game and got less then have the conversion they did on a single one of our videos haha. I agree. I hate to sound "old," but I do miss the old days of KZbin. That was more humble time on the platform, and KZbin creators weren't making more than a lawyer or doctor. It was mainly seen as a way to communicate with others and to share your life and ideas. Now, it's a huge drip show, showing off your wealth and displaying all these sponsorships. I have KZbin premium, and if I wanted to see ads and sponsorships, the I would have never signed up for it.

Back in the late 90s when I was a young teen, I was making money through advertising on the internet. It was easy to do and on my years as a 14-15 year old, I made more money than my mom. I thought that would be my life right there where I could wake up, check the metrics and go about my day doing whatever I wanted. I was so wrong. Competition kicked in over time and eventually the online advertising was so saturated, the income stream declined significantly while the work efforts increased exponentially. This same situation will likely occur with my current business. I got in early and did very well with a lot of hard work. But online retail is becoming a saturated market and it's really tough out there these days with everyone basically doing the same thing. This is one of those cases where having a brand name established really helps for longevity but I do realize that it might not last forever. So it's obvious that these initial KZbinrs making boatloads of cash would have unrealistic expectations if they think it will go on forever. Eventually, the market is going to find the level where it should be, which is basically a few well-trusted entities and then a bunch of smaller ones willing to make videos for whatever the minimum amount of money is that they are willing to do it for. That's just how economics work.

But you're connecting your total business income to sponsored segments from these KZbinrs Some KZbinrs with 15,000 subscribers make $6mil a year from course sales, live events, etc. Some with 5 million subscribers aren't even millionaires When you factor in total business income, the influencer bubble will NEVER collapse because someone with 10 million subscribers that hasn't been canceled will always be able to sell merch, courses and coaching, etc and possibly make more money than when they were doing sponsored posts lol

great comment! I see this in a slightly different way in real estate sales(been selling real estate for 20+ years). It happens every time the real estate market gets hot and it's easy to sell homes. Everyone and their brother become real estate agents and make easy money. BUT, too many agents, the market gets saturated. AS soon as the market turns down, all those agents that really had no idea what they were doing now can't make easy money and get out of real estate. No different than influencers. If it's easy money, everyone jumps in...until there is so much competition no one is making any money, and the weak ones that really shouldn't be in the business, to begin with, lose their shirt and get out. What is left is the high qualify influencers and small fish barely making ends meet. It's the basic 80/20 rule. 20% of people make 80% of the money, 20% of real estate agents make 80% of the money. Goes for other industries too.

Sometime you dont know any product to start off with at all. Like for example, skin care products. Teens and young adults like me often genuinely have no idea where to start, even if we do, we often pick the brand we recognize-- meaning, the most appeared one in advertisement. If an influencer I trust recommended a cheaper brand, actively advertising it, and they have beautiful skin, heck yes Im trying that brand.

In order to use your own judgement on products, you first have to know about the products. That's what the advertisers are really paying for - eyeballs. Not necessarily the opinion of the person talking about the product. (Some shameless sponsors have taken a negative review from an influencer, muted it, and used it in the marketing anyway, leading to some legal scuffles in the process.) I didn't know about things like a specific eyebrow pen until I saw a makeup artist demonstrate it, and name the brand that produced it. I went out and bought it and tried it, and it has now become part of my regular routine. *That* is what the brands are trying to do with their sponsorships. There are plenty of products that I see influencers talking about or using where I can immediately dismiss them as irrelevant for me, but if a makeup artist is promoting a new line of stuff, then if I'm watching the makeup artist I'm automatically the target audience for the company to begin with.

Only use their advice on technical stuff, like a car expert's opinion on good brakes. The problem is that people crave advice only on clouty shit, cause they want some of that clout too, they are not really interested on the functionallity of what they are gonna buy. So Logan Paul's advice on financial investments is more valuable than an actual financial advisor's with decades of experience. And that is the reason why it is a bubble, there is almost no real value in their "influencing", they are just wholesaling clout to normies.

I work in marketing. I can't speak for the giant companies that talk to everyone. I can speak for what i've seen with medium companies(lets say 50 to 500 employees) that work in a specific industry (my background is in higher ed and DMOs(travel)) Influencer budget are still very present however the past few years they have been shrinking. Choosing influences is also becoming a slower process. There is a trend towards influences with smaller audience. Could be a money thing but is usually framed as a way to insure audience trust. Influences are being used more to create brand awareness apposed to before when they more involved in the hard sell aspect later in the conversion process. There is a resurgence in more traditional marketing avenues. This is due to uncertainty in tech, legal and social changes. Influences are a very small part of all that.

I wanted to add though that more of a priority for 18-34 demo is not just that they spend more (really depends on the product), but that that's the period where you build brand loyalty to daily stuff theyre gonna get the rest of their life. Its very important to target them young, because after 35, people get very set in the choices they have made. Not a lot of brand switching after that period.

I think we base our metrics off history and previous trends (obviously) but the world is changing. What’s going to happen to the younger millennials and gen z’s. I think the way we consume is going to change for people over 34. That’s just my prediction. Content is apart of our daily regimens now. I'm a Millennial elder, and we as a cohort have very little brand loyalty. There are perhaps 2 companies that get my exclusive business in their product space, and for each of them, it's because the quality of products has been consistent over the years, and the few times I have had a problem, their staff has gone above and beyond to fix it. Now that you mention this, I started developing that loyalty when I was in my 20s, and it was more or less solidified by my early thirties. Any time I have deviated from them, I've had regrets because their competition failed to live up to the same standard. (The brands are Delta Airlines and Bath & Body Works, for anyone who is curious.) Pretty much every other product or service I use changes based on cheapest price, individual product quality, availability, and current style trends. My closet and makeup drawers are like a thrift store bazaar. Almost all my cleaning products are a store brand or generic. Even someone like me is still susceptible to influencers, though. I've been experimenting with different make up products on recommendations from someone who does eye tutorials.

Mostly because in my experience, it's because they got lucky. They had the right channel at the right time where the algorithm happened to be tuned to promote their content at that specific moment. Many things had to fall into place perfectly and their talent and hard work make up maybe 5% of the result, with luck being the remaining 95%.

Majority of youtube channels don't blow up for years and people will consistently upload never knowing if anyone will ever see there content. if they will ever make any money from the hours they put into there videos. Editing a video on average takes 5-8 hours minimum. Planning and other parts of content creation take even longer. KZbin is not easy as many like to believe. It takes the average Channel with 1 mill subs at minimum 5 years to there. It was never just pure luck. It was consistency, preparedness, discipline and hard work. The channels that blow up in a year or a couple months are unicorns and are a couple hundred out of millions of you tubers who took 5 years to a decade to build their following. They lack what most People do, the self belief and perseverance to keep going and putting yourself out there even when nothing is currently in front of you. Building a youtube channel is consistency and delayed gratification (that may never come.) If they got lucky it because they were prepared. Most people aren't and will never have the courage to put themselves online due to fear. Minus the youtube scammers who have tainted the YT name I think youtubers at least deserve respect for seeing through there entrepreneurial journey.

Last year I made a promise to myself where if anything was advertised to me, I would now make sure I would never buy it again (aside from cleaning products). I pay for all my content (KZbin premium and Netflix) and have total encryption and multiple ad blockers, but when an ad does make it past my fortress that product is no automatically something I now despise. The “advertise to the poor” and “make the rich pay” is the worst fking way to generate money. I cannot wait until all ads are finally dead. I hope everything that relies on ads is no more.

That's a good point but even then Mr Beast isn't quite the same Mr Beast from years ago when he was still growing. Before it's was mainly him and his friends just trying different or weird things and his personality showed a lot in those early videos. Now his videos have poured in thousands if not millions of dollars where he's like the presenter of the show and it's everyone else in the video who's doing most of the work or being put through the challenge. Heck there are videos from other people in his circle who have their own channels now and are growing by having his name also in the title. Suffice it to say, I'd say much of the money has gone to Mr Beast's head and people aren't gonna remember Mr Beast for who he is anymore. That is a real problem if people can't connect with him then it's hard for them to trust him. If there is less trust, then that's a problem for his ad partnerships and in turn his own future revenue. While I do think Mr Beast is has enough resources to keep his wealth if his youtube career ever slows down, but at some point it will. With or without him I question if Mr Beast like other influencers have thought and prepared for that.

For big channels yes. They see that a brand is willing to pay them $200k for an ad read because the brand will make more than that in product sales. Thats where the real money is. It's a simple step for the creator to make a brand and effectively have unlimited free advertising on their own channel, which gives them an advantage over the brands that have to pay for advertising. Of course this requires the creators to offload all the actual work of making and selling the products, so they're a bit limited in the complexity. Which is why almost everyone sells really simple things like Tshirts. Or in Mr Beasts case, offloading it to an app business that then offloads it to individual restaurants.

one of my favorite youtubers damn near had a revolt in his community when he promoted a gambling company to his audience. he posted an apology video and promised he'd do better about who he does business with. within a year he took another contract with them he burnt all the remaining good will he had left with the community. the damage was so severe i believe it even resulted in him getting personally banned, from playing the game he based his channel, around for a lengthy period of time. his viewership is only a fraction of what it was years later. be careful who you do business with people, his deal was lucrative enough to set him up in a new apartment in an expensive part of europe but it came at the cost of all his future youtube revenue.

History repeats itself. Reminds me of the stories of when Google Ads first took off. As clever as the idea was at the time, 15-20 years ago people were building phony websites and using Google Ads to generate clicks, resulting in "earned" revenue. There's a KZbinr who went into detail about how he got into it years ago. He was making good money on top of his job. It only lasted a few months. Eventually, Google caught on to what people were doing and ended it. Interest rates seem to control everything. When interest rates are low, everyone is a genius. Stocks, marketing, advertising, real estate. Doesn't matter. As soon as interest rates rise, you discover who the fakes are. And there are many. The ones with the skills stick around.

The main problem is not the bubble itself but the fact that the platforms protect the more successful and don't allow for new people to join in on the action. The promote the videos of the people who is already successful and burry the videos of the people trying to enter the market and put all kind of miles they need to achieve before getting some income. While the others are getting money to burn. In any case I always use ad blockers so they never get any revenue from my side.

I appreciate your candor and humor. Ultimately, there are other limiting factors and podcasters appear to have hit a wall in the growth of their market. There's a limit to audiences, their time, and their money. This problem goes beyond KZbin and podcasters. A certain major online retailer and other parties have asked me to review freebies they would send me and said major online retailer also said they would pay me(not much!) to give them information on what I buy, from whom, and how much I paid for it. I was momentarily temped because I don't make much money, but decided not to in both cases. I have all the integrity I can eat, lol! When I recommend something on KZbin in comments it's because I think it's relevant to the subject at hand.

Whoever came up with the term "influencer" was out to gut online influencers of their influence. It's like calling the president's state address "propaganda", it doesn't matter if it's true or not, but you're telling people that you're out to change their minds and nobody does anything without having a scope, plus nobody likes to have their minds changed, they want to do that themselves. Of course, this goes against everything in how marketing works so you're in a shady business to begin with.

KZbin was way more fun to watch when there was no money made from it. I remember the exact moment, Linus tech tip’s uploaded a video and asked what our opinions were on if he should enable this new thing that allowed him to make a few cents on KZbin. Fast forward 14 years, and now it seems like everyone uploads videos like its a job, and half the time it comes across as a chore. KZbin used to fun, now it seems like we’re watching people go to work

I think you Tube has revolutionized the television industry.. It’s a mix of archival treasures of sporting events and news stories. I personally watch a lot of old NFL films stuff on KZbin. The format has also been a treasure trove for documentary lovers like me; subjects referring to business, economics, politics, history. The content makers on KZbin overwhelmingly do great research, there’s no drama or fluff. KZbin caters to people like me who have niche interests that wouldn’t make an economic sense to be served on conventional media. The content providers I subscribe to usually have between 5000 and 100000 subscribers. Probably none of them are millionaires or ever will be but they fill a void for intellectuals like me who hate mindless drama, reality TV. I feel like information IS the ultimate entertainment and that’s what I get from KZbin

I am curious, is there a reason why some are more impressionable? I used to own a business in the luxury market. Over the 12 -years, one thing really stuck with me - people buying (very) expensive goods were not rich. Far from it. Also, I find most of my friends aren't very brand impressionable. But others, do fall for it hook line and sinker. You see the comments on social media... What mades some people really easy to advertise to?

I think the most contributing factors come from your social class: - low status - poverty - educational alienation Also your age and experiences, but mostly the social class determines your naïveté and impressionability.

There are people who are psychological more susceptible to the messages pushed by advertisers. And advertisers know exactly what buttons to push and what words to say to hook in someone and we all fall for it in someway. That same glitch in some peoples psychology is why some people become addicted to gambling or fall for email scams when other people in the same situation do not. Also there are things like social and economic factors that make people more susceptible. For example, it's been common for years for companies to promise that buying their product will make your life better in someway. If you are in a difficult place economically for example, you might become more likely to fall for that messaging even if you wouldn't otherwise.

@@saschamayer4050 Yeah I can beliebe this. Forbes (I think) had an article on how rich people are more immune from branding. My own experience shows this too. When I was in the 'hood', I would always try increase status through brands - partly because I felt worthless. I am a little more comfortable now, and I honestly find brands a bit lame.

Oddly, I recently did an MBA - and it is very interesting how it is presented: What pain does your value proposition alleviate, make peoples lives better etc. Basically, what can you get people to buy... but word it in a righteous way? It is interesting how most brands are projecting a more 'urban' image in their ads. They say diversity and inclusion, of course, rather than demographics with higher brand identity...

I'm so thankful influencers weren't a thing when my kids were toddlers. I was so overwhelmed and sleep deprived I probably would've been sucked into some mommy blogger's channel. ☹️ It'll be... interesting to see how many mansions and private jets get repossessed over the next few years.

The thing about influencers is that they make money out of people by tricking them into thinking they are their friend. The thing is they don't do it explicitly, so it is not their fault, they just play with the mind by using our natural hability to link experiences with friendship. That way by uploading to a social platform episodes of their life, not genuinely made, but with the intention to make you feel they are genuine and authentic, you give them your trust. Once you give them your trust they have power to influence you, and then is when companies takes part in to pay influencers to promote their products in exchange of a big pay. Is it a bubble? Financially i don't know, but certainly given the globalization world in which we live in, i think this model of marketing has come to stay for long. My advice: go make some friends, and take their content as it is, a product they want to sell you. The same way consuming fast food long enough is bad for you, take good care in what content you consume and for how long.

Yeah, my niche is promoting a lot of 💩 and it’s a concern for me as my channel grows. I don’t want to be an influencer, but I want to be a full time video creator (more time would mean more and better videos). So, my goal is to figure out how to do this without having to take on sponsors. Look at the recent established titles thing. I mean you even have influencers flying to Scotland, chilling with the CEO, and telling their audience, “it’s ok bro, they’re not a scam.” Great video and spot on!

The "tone things down to seem more relatable" is extremely important if you're a "one man" show. I've found almost the entire premise is to establish parasocial relationships to bolster engagement. Shilling questionable stuff that doesn't align with what you do is a very fast way to tank your reputation and future income from said "one man" show. However, I disagree with the fundamental point. The bubble won't "pop". It'll be a slow decline with new, cheaper marketing strategies taking the place of youtube. KZbin has become expensive to do advertising on.

You make some very good points but in my opinion it ain't getting broken any time soon because for many of youtubers and streamers most of their income is not coming directly from other companies and sponsors but directly from their own audience in the forms of donations , special subscriptions on different platforms, their own investments and such with gigantic profits. So yeah , I think they've shifted the business model for themselves too.
