Remember also that one Stormtrooper on Endor shot Leia in the arm when she was in the bunker at a distance of at least several hundred feet, overcoming both physical cover and main character plot armor. Combine these data with the fact that Stormtroopers rarely seem to aim, but instead fire from the hip, and their skill with a blaster looks even more impressive.

And they are stated as being phased out by Stormies, because the Army was majorly incompetent; Mimban is a great example, where Solo's entire regiment wasn't gaining any ground and took serious casualties. After the Stormies started being deployed, Mimbanese resistance finally started to crumble. So Stormtroopers are becoming the grunts of the Empire. Palpatine is fine with throwing lives away, but he hates inefficient enforcers, so he replaced the Imperial Army like he replaced planetary defense forces, with Stormtroopers.

Let's not forget Hoth. Hoth had significant ground troops and the snowtroopers that landed with Vader played a large role in subduing the base. We forget about them because the walkers are more impressive looking, but the stormtroopers are quick and efficient soldiers. They're not bad on Endor, either; they were fighting against guerillas who had greater territorial knowledge and were able to effectively use it against them, but they still managed to do reasonably well and take out a fair number of enemy combatants before being defeated. There aren't really any examples in the OT of stormtroopers being incompetent; their weakest showing is probably in the Mos Eisley escape, and that can be explained as Han being that good a shot and the heroes already being almost completely secure and ready to evacuate. It's only in the EU that stormtroopers start to become less competent.

I'm kind of sick of the whole "Stormtroopers can't aim" argument. The part in the trilogy where seem to miss the most is explained in the movie that they were ordered not to kill them. Besides, what did people expect George Lucas to do? Have the heroes get shot and almost killed every firefight? EDIT: Since my comment is getting a lot of attention, I feel like I should clarify that I do think that the OT films should have done better at demonstrating the skill of Stormtroopers. What bothers me is that all the expanded material, including the new shows, make Stormtroopers absolute buffoons and take the "Stormtrooper aim" joke to the extreme.

One note: while the Rebels seem to always take cover and retreat, the Stormtroopers are aggressively pushing forward. Considering their armor and that in the Hallway Scene, a trooper is checking a downed man, it's possible they actually have a superior tactic: the psychological fear of an army of faceless soldiers rushing towards you is pretty terrifying, and if the armor does hold up, that does a lot for the reverse: the troopers are less afraid.
@aceambling7685

There's a reason why they all wear the same armor and rush forward when one man is downed. They're like the Persian Immortals. Persian Immortals were called Immortals because when one of their men in the front lines were killed, they were pulled back into the ranks and another man would take the fallen man's place, making it seem like they were fighting the same enemy. They also all wore the same masks and armor and in the chaos of combat, it really did seem like they were immortal.

Have those guys ever actually been canon? They’ve been depicted in no official media outside of the role playing games. @infinitesheldon5710
@infinitesheldon5710 5 жыл бұрын
Another point I've seen made, that I particularly enjoy, is Stormtroopers' performance based off of role. For example, the Stormtroopers easily overwhelmed the Rebels in the Tantive IV and on Hoth, but they failed to stop the Rebels on Endor. Throughout the TV show Rebels, the main characters regularly succeed in assaulting/stealing from locations defended by Stormtroopers, but when the tables are turned and the Stormtroopers find the Rebels' position, the main cast is forced to flee. It's all in the name, honestly. *Storm* troopers. They're great at storming locations. Not so much at defending them. Their role seems to be dedicated to offense, and when they're put in charge of defending something, they typically under-perform. This could be because their training is entirely based off of the mentality that the Empire should be the only assailant in any confrontation. The Empire planned to violently expand its borders throughout the Outer Rim, and it trained its soldiers to be capable of assaulting one world after another, breaking through any defenses. They didn't really expect a sudden massive civil war, especially when they planned on having a Death Star online to keep worlds in order through fear. Why bother training how to properly defend when everyone is too terrified to attack you? Much better to instead train your forces to conquer.
@ARCNA442
@ARCNA442 5 жыл бұрын
That actually makes a lot of sense and can be seen in their equipment (no camo, limited supplies, compact blasters for CQB, all their heavy weapons are mounted on walkers). It's ideal for offensive operations but ill-suited to static defensive positions. Rebels unfortunately reinforced the "every Imperial soldier is a Stormtrooper" myth, but guard duty was supposed to be left to standard Imperial Army / Imperial Navy units. Probably the only reason Stormtroopers were responsible for defending the Endor bunker was because it was a top secret project and they were desired more for their loyalty than their skill.
@josephattwell1006
@josephattwell1006 5 жыл бұрын
Alternatively, the relative training and effectiveness of Stormtroopers vary wildly throughout the Empire. Vader's personal troops were some of the best with years of training and combat experience, and the ones set on the important tasks of conquering land for the Empire are better than most, but the ones we see in stationed to play guard duty on backwater planets are barely trained conscripts. The Empire has tens of thousands of planets it needs to garrison and trillions of citizens to keep under their oppressive boots. The Emperor wanted to rule via fear without needing a Senate. It needs troops, an unimaginable amount of them, so it just hands out a suit and blaster to anyone who proves loyal enough.

The issue is that the movies somewhat uses Stormtroopers where it should be using the Imperial Army. Stormtroopers are numerous, however they're not grunts. In "Rebels", I assumed that the Stormtroopers on Lothal and other locations were 2nd rate Stormtroopers used for garrison duties and/or for security on ships while the ones that seized the Tantive IV were elite stormtroopers and they were. Besides, the Rebels on Lothal tended to fight unconventionally with hit and run attacks and ambushes which the stormtroopers there weren't expecting as it was something not covered in their training.

Yes they are. The Empire had standing armies on all worlds with a population of note, and routinely sent regiments of said army troops to any nearby hot-spots they needed dealing with. Stormtroopers were defending only top-line installations of note or very important worlds, otherwise they would be on ships ready to be deployed wherever required. That's why it's stormtroopers (and navy troopers, the guys in black on the DS) on the Death Star, that's why the stormtroopers of the 501st storm Hoth, that's why they do the fighting on Bespin, that's why they defend the Shield generator on Endor and so on. Rebels have a tendency to want to hit important targets, thus they run into Stormtroopers a lot more. Had they gone and started or supported a more drawn-out terrestrial war, they would have to deal with Army troopers primarily. Well, until the empire realized it was a well-organised rebel force, then the Army would get stormtrooper backup.

@Shreyas Misra Well... The Clones were a pretty damn elite force to be reckoned with. Like, if you can basically clone anyone it isn't that much more expensive to clone a professional fighter rather than just some dude. Not to forget that the clones started getting their combat training before they even got out of their diapers. Storm Troopers may not always be as capable as Clone Troopers but the Republican Clone army should not be considered even remotely average. One Clone was worth several B88's but they had to be. It still took several years to get a clone soldier ready for the battlefield whereas a droid could be manufactured in days, if not hours. Storm Troopers represent the peak of normal human performance that can be achieved by regular training and outclass the other armies of their time, however it would make sense that someone who was literally born for the job would not be able to fully understand the struggles of a regular recruit. But compared to Rebel troopers they still have better equipment, a more coherent training and represent the peak, the cream of the crop of imperial recruits. Rebel units on the other hand are mostly made up by local militia and volunteers, they receive some basic training but don't really have centralized training facilities and their gear is just about what command could get their hands on. They owe the majority of their victories to guerilla style combat tactics, trying to ambush the enemy forces and making as much use of the element of surprise as possible. If you compare the battles of Endor and Hoth the strengths of each faction become quite apparent.

It's also important to note that in the movies our heroes aren't exactly killing machines and are usually running FROM stormtroopers. Luke, Han and Leia spend a lot pinned down behind cover taking shots at troopers trying to advance on them. They get a couple hits on guys in the open but usually its just enough to buy them some time. one of the things actually really like about the original trilogy is how it feels more like an adventure movie than an action movie and the heroes really aren't unstoppable bad-asses.

Yes, the heroes could probably take on a few, but there’s a good number of stormtroopers and they’re established as being quite competent. It’s so scenes like Luke and Ben having to cross the checkpoint have gravitas and tension; if the troopers were treated as useless goons, there’d be no tension since, if they discover the droids, the heroes aren’t in any danger and obi wan wouldn’t even need subtlety or the mind trick. Suppressive fire to keep the enemies' heads down. And in case of the Civil war: Most soldiers were using smoothbore muskets, very inaccurate weapons. Anyways, that hallway scene doesn't make too much sense in how it played out anyways. In reality, the moment the door opened both sides would've been chucking grenades. Also one Stormtrooper checks on a fallen comrade, implying they might just be wounded (otherwise there's not really any point in checking on them if a hit is a 100% guaranteed death). In Legends the Stormtroopers that boarded the Tantive IV were 501st Clone Veterans and the best Recruits the Empire had. In Canon the 501st is entirely made up of Recruits who apparently have higher performance than average Stormtrooper Units. For all we know the Alderaanian Consular Security are even worse shots than Stormtroopers. Alderaan is a (Supposedly) Peaceful planet and the Galactic Civil War had just started. So beyond the 1 Survivor of Vader's recent rampage I bet those Rebels had little to no combat experience. Rogue One however clarifies that many of those Rebels we see were actually Crewmen of the Profundity (The recently lost Flagship of the Rebel Alliance) and it had presumably seen some combat before The Battle of Scarif so there might be a few veterans in that row of Rebels. Those Stormtroopers had to have been the best of the best to be assigned to Vader's Personal Legion. Clones or not they had to have some experience with fighting Insurgents.

They did nothing impressive on the Tantive based on what they were facing and the conditions. And this "twice as accurate as our most accurate soldiers" claim is laughable.

Let me stop you right there with the "100,000 shots to kill one target" claim. Such claim was made by dividing the number of casualties with the number of ammunition consumption, but it completely overlooked the factors such as: 1. Heavy ammunition consumption during training. 2. IRL soliders apply a lot of suppressive fire towards the general direction of the enemy, and they will keep firing even after the targets were already dead. After all, it's not like they got a kill count notification popping up every time they scored a kill. 3. More often than not when soliders were hit by bullets, they don't really die outright and many of them would receive proper treatment. For instance, as of June 29, 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Defense casualty website, there were 4,424 total deaths (including both killed in action and non-hostile) and 31,952 wounded in action (WIA) as a result of the Iraq War. As you can see, the previous calculation would drastically underestimate the hit ratio. 4. Ever since WW1, artilleries had replaced guns as the NO.1 cause of death in conventional warfare, meaning that a lot of times the enemies would be dead long before they can even get to the range at which a rifle can accurately hit them when they were in cover.

You make a point that I most certainly agree with, but I'd still guess it takes an average 10-15 shots from, for example, an M4 Carbine, to kill an enemy at 300 to 600 meters.

This is an excellent point, and realistic video games reflect this. In more authentic shooters like _Insurgency_ and milsims like _ArmA,_ anyone with accuracy ratings over 20% is a high threat, and someone who gets over 50% is someone to be outright feared or is a camping wuss who only fires a handful of shots in a round. Both those games it can be difficult to identify kills, and a lot of "misses" is just ammo being expended into a position obscured by debris and cover... often at a dead combatant. Since suppressive fire also can be effective in those games that also skews accuracy; _Insurgency_ is kind enough to note the number of enemies you suppress in a round as well as kills (it counts assists as kills as well).

This is simply an argument for why statistics don't mean everything and why a more detailed analysis is needed to verify claims. I like to think everybody watching this has an understanding of that, and when it's mentioned that it takes 100000 shots to kill one man, versus 200 shots from 200 years ago, we are aware of the nuances involved and the fact that it's just "shots fired"/"kills". I don't think anyone realistically imagines a single soldier in Iraq hiding behind a wall as 100000 bullets pummels the wall until eventually the last round hits and kills him. I also don't think anyone is going to use the above statistic to claim that a civil war musket is over 500 times more accurate then a modern M4 assault rifle. It's just a way to establish a ballpark.

Uhg! The old myth of 100,000 rounds to kill an enemy soldier in WW2 and it's equally ridiculous claim of 50,000 rounds to kill an enemy soldier in Vietnam is just really, really bad data. Like, utterly useless information because it was based on (a.) all small arms ammunition to train US troops inside the USA, as well as (b.) additionally training, zeroing, and familiarization fires conducting in combat theater. Finally, (c.) this data only looked at the enemy DEAD and not the enemy total casualties, including wounds. After all, not all "hits on target" produce fatalities. For example, when enemy TOTAL CASUALTIES are calculated into ONLY the ammunition fired in combat, we see accuracy climb dramatically to 84 rounds fired by US troops per enemy casualty. Now, if that sounds like a lot of small arms ammunition fired to inflict a single casualty - it is! But this statement ignores the dynamic of small unit battle in which covering fires, suppressive fires, and counter-suppressive fires all play a critical role in allowing a unit to subdivide in order to gain a better angle of attack against an enemy opponent. What is very telling is that unlike covering fires, suppressive fires, and counter-suppressive fires...well-aimed shots almost invariably produce an enemy casualty! But in the dynamic of the battle, a well-aimed shot is a rarity that both opponents vie for through a combination of fire and maneuver. And guess what? The ratio of ammunition fired to produce a single casualty hasn't changed all that significantly over the past 200 years. Studies done during the Napoleonic era showed that even when soldiers stood shoulder-to-shoulder and fired en masse at ranges of just 40 to 60 meters...they still only achieved a very low percentage of battlefield casualties, typically in the single digits of percentage of combatants. Of course, the technology was dramatically different then, but our tactics have kept pace with our technological advances in weaponry, and it is TACTICS that mitigate high volumes of fire and produce the lower rates of casualties inflicted by small arms.

Listen, I really appreciate your work Henry, really do. But I have to be *that* guy. 3:01 - 3:37 is nonsense. I assume that statistic is why you came to your conclusion, but you mistake it for a realistic reflection of a soldiers' accuracy in specific situations, or in general. A professional soldier can successfully engage targets at +300, sometimes 500 meters, while under stress. But usualy engagements take place at +/-100 meters, and usualy both sides utilize cover. Your example here, the fight scene in A New Hope, takes places in very confined space, at incredibly close, almost point blank range, with little to no cover whatsoever. Both sides are showering eachother with projectiles and missing. That is physicaly impossible in real life. Especialy when one side is forced to squeeze through a tiny choke point. You suggested that one rebel could have been enough to stall them for a while. Yes, that is actualy what would happen in real life if the enemy just tried to blindly bull rush through that door. If the attacking force instead filled that hallways with a dozen or two flash grenades right after blowing up the door, than yes, that would have made *FAR* more sense.

@@timtanner2365 Ok, Stormtroopers vs police. The avarage police officer's primary weapon / self defense tool is a handgun. A Backup weapon such as a smg, rifle or shotgun usualy remains in the squad car and is rarely or ever deployed. The police officer can, but in many icircumstances does not wear a plate carrier or any other type of protection. The Stormtrooper's primary weapon is the E-11 blaster rifle which comes in semi-and fully automatic setting. Every individual Stormtrooper is fully clad in composite armor, that is essentialy also a hazmat suit. Though that armor is primary designed to protect against energy bolts, not solid projectiles, it's still proteciton they wear all the time. On top of that, the helmets they wear, have a butt load of functions, including target assist and the ability to even see through smoke screens. *tl;dr* It's hardly a fair comparison in terms of equipment. Now, proficiency: Police officers are trained to use and hit accurately with their issued weapons, but they are not really expected to be marksmen or excell in shooting. There are SWAT teams and snipers for that. Stormtroopers are supposed to be rigorously trained marksmen. Yet they won't hit the broad side of a barn, as evident in the movies, as well as tv shows. "SW:Rebels" being possibly the most extreme example for that. When you look at real live footage of shootouts, specificaly policemen chasing down and shooting armed criminals or vice versa, in most cases they end pretty quick.

@timtanner2365 5 жыл бұрын
@@lkvideos7181 The handgun vs blaster argument is moot due to the blasters being fired on the semi automatic setting for the duration of the scene referenced in the video. I'd like you to show me one police department in the U.S that has their police roll the streets with no body armor. Body armor has no bearing in the conversation anyways due to the fact that we are talking about accuracy. Saying something is "hardly a fair comparison" in this case is just lazy. Here's why, he is judging storm troopers against rebels, rebels would receive comparable if not more training than a police officer in marksmanship. Your qualm is that he used the military statistics because it accounted for training rounds and suppressive fire and that's a totally fair problem. The police statistic takes out suppressive fire and training rounds. That is the best benchmark to judge both sides off of. Police are 100% expected to be marksmen with their weapons. However, the real life statistics of police involved shooting show that no amount of range time prepares you for combat (which is why the rebels would realistically underperform). The reason that stormtroopers underperform in the shows and movies is because it wouldn't be very fun to watch 5 minutes of intense action then all the storm troopers standing over the dead protagonists.
@lkvideos7181

@@timtanner2365 Sure, but it's a feature and option. Current canon also largely stripped the disadvantiges established in the EU. Now E-11s have cooling systems that prevent them to overheat (or as easily) when going full auto. Gotta also keep in mind that a single cell can amount to hundreds of shots. Good point. I'm not up to date with U.S. federal law. But here in Germany for example, you don't see that so often despite the increase since 2017. In many if not most other countries those things are largely or completly neglected. "No bearing". To me it does because from the POV of the Stormtrooper, he is in a very advantigious position. He is aware that their force is completly superior, especialy with Vader fighting on their side which is a huge moral boost. On top of that he and his buddies are almost completly clad in armor that disperses most type of small arms fire, and direct hits would in most cases only incapacitate them. That might be just enough overconfidence to think it's ok to charge through a choke point like that and not expect too many or any casualties. So you're saying, when you take out those redundant or negligable factors, the avarage policeman is still less accurate despite hitting the target, compared to the Stormtrooper rarely even hitting anything ? Now a good counter to that would be Rogue One, where the Imperials do kill quite a number of rebels with accuracy especialy with the arrival of Death Troopers. But not before the rebels kill scores of them first and both sides utilized cover in that battle. Personaly if we disregard that the Rebels in the fight scene referenced in this video, were very lightly armed ship crew that were probably not as well trained in combat as frontline soldiers or all the specialised alliance units, I'd say overall the Rebel Alliance had better soldiers. Part due to many highly skilled and experienced defectors. Based on what I've seen personaly, and heard from people who served in law enforcement, either they don't spend enough time to get more proficient with it, or are instructed poorly. When you see police officers down range wrist limping etc, than you figure, it's not isolated problems. Yes, obviously combat experience is the only thing that will prepare you, and the 501st in particular was a unit with very extensive combat experience and honours. Yet they underperform against basicaly stationary targets that were briefly stunned by the explosion. Well yes, I know that's the main reason. But in reality such things as plot armor / hero plot armor, don't exist. I know it's not fair, however it's the only visual and physical evidence we have. The rule braker really being Rogue One, and Obi Wan claiming in A New Hope, that Stormtroopers are accurate ah.

Facts: storm troopers are really accurate. Plot armor: I'm about to end their whole career.

ANH they were ordered to miss. Other films they win most of the ground engagements, only exception is when they are vastly outnumbered. Plot armour doesn't affect storm troopers.

@@ASB117 That doesn’t even remotely hold up. I can give you over a dozen examples of Stormtroopers missing shots anybody should have been able to make with both eyes closed. When they win engagements it’s almost always either through overwhelming force (numbers or superior vehicles) or it’s against disposable extras who need to die for the plot to proceed. The boarding action in ANH is just about the only time we see any substantial competence from Stormtroopers.

It is amazing to read the statistics about how many rounds are fired in combat without hitting anyone, or even how many rounds are fired without even the intention of hitting anyone.

Try using a laser pointer to hit a target, you'll find you probably need a second to zero in to EXACTLY the point you want. Also some of those STs are blind firing from cover. It could be assumed the lead troopers are the only ones doing the actual killing, and using even fewer shots than estimated.

I know this is late, but I'm honestly really glad you made this video! I grew up as a walking Star Wars encyclopedia and nobody would ever believe me on how accurate Stormtroopers actually were because all they had ever heard was the jokes. My family would still never listen to me even if they watched this video because that's just how they are, but at least I feel validated on one of my controversial Star Wars opinions. So thank you for this highly informative video, I enjoyed it greatly ^^
