Dusty I live with a Hernia and have already had surgery where they put it back in but popped out again. There are a lot of folks that live with Hernias. So animals can do the same thing but just with humans you just keep an eye on it. I do understand how Lumpy might feel. Bison meat is healthy and I just love it. It's not a fatty meat so you need to cook it differently than you would a fatty beef. The older the Bison the better the meat is. Thanks!

Glad I saw this I had a dairy first calf heifer calve last week and when we brought her in to milk her we discovered a lump on her side yesterday she was with her calf for 3.5 days before we separated them. So I called and left a message on my vet's recorder today the lump on my girl doesn't appear to be bothering her and I don't know how long she's had it. But seeing this video has given me a little hope the way our luck goes I was thinking cancer. But we'll have our vet inspect her and see what he says. He's pretty sharp. He diagnosed a blocked secum on a cow several yrs ago. He himself had never seen one outside of vet school at Purdue. And I think the many attending the vet school at the time were in the exam room when we arrived at Purdue. I'm not one to post on FB and ask the question what's wrong with my cow? Glad you were able to round this boy up and get him loaded and that he'll have the proper care he needs. I'm nearly 64 and have been around dairy cattle all my life and am still learning.

@@lamebubblesflysohigh he is in pain. Ask anyone who has a hernia. Exspecially after they eat and food moves through their guts. He was a wild animal and he couldnt keep up with his herd. That is why he stayed with a herd of cattle. He wasnt standing when they went to "rescue" him. They shot him and he was staggering b4 the dart took affect. He has lost alot of weight since his rescue. He is being bullied (pecking order) from the other yearlings. He is the smallest and his ribs is showing. His hernia is alot bigger now then when he got there No, he is not happy and he is in pain. Just saying the truth.

@@lamebubblesflysohigh oh, by the way, im a 62 year old farmer (all my life. Not a new homesteader) i rehab animals and worked out as an animal control officer and have worked with wild life services. I am speaking from experience and skill and not from my heart or dream world (what i wish life could be). I seen my son lose weight b4 till his ribs showed. He couldnt eat food cause it cause to much pain when it went through his system. It hurt trying to squeeze through the tear in the muscle that holds your guts in and hurts when you try to push the guts back in. And i have known many others with hernias. They aint fun. You have to have surgery. They wont do surgery on this bull cause of the cost and they will just dress him anyway. Just telling the facts.

God Bless you for taking him in...worming him and giving him his shots, good food and minerals to keep him as healthy as possible! I understand surgery just isn't a good option, Doc said it is so badly ripped inside that getting the torn edges to stay together would almost surely be impossible...he is top of the line bison vet! As long as he's not suffering, and obviously he's not, wonderful of you to let him live happy, well fed, his being at the bottom of "pecking" order is normal, one in any herd always will be, so that's a normal thing in his life. He's got a 'family' so he's happy. People and animals can live fine with a hernia, if he gets a problem with it, you will know quickly, and of course put him out of pain. SO glad you took him in, lots of people would have just shot him rather than mess with him. Lumpy I think is a good name. We know you will keep a close eye on his health. The other issue is they have no clue how long he’s had that hernia and it’s gotten so big I highly doubt he has enough muscle to even cover the hole. Usually with hernia’s they have to be repaired right away. Poor baby and it’s so unfortunate but he will live out whatever time he has left being taken great care of and a happy life however long it is.

I get it. If you push the intestines back in they may be so crowded, some will loose circulation and necrosis will set in. You may be able to remove part of his intestine to make more room but I doubt the stapled muscle wall will heal. He would just rip out the staples. You can't confine him in a stall.

Lump will gradually get larger. One day it may split open when the wall loses it integrity. Wish a vet could put some kind of mattress sutures in to at least hold the hernia at bay. He may end up living a normal life, one just can't predict the future. Thank you for taking him in and helping him out. My wife and I are running a homeless shelter for cats and dogs. A great thing happened today. I found a beautiful peach calico cat in my garage. Since she was friendly we took her in and put her in a room by herself. Several people took pictures and within hours she was on multiple lost and found sites. After a week of caring for and feeding her all she could eat we found that she was already taken by a neighbor two doors down. They were so excited to see their baby. We were excited getting her to her real home.
