Wow. What a show that was. I've been listening to these guys since my brother brought their first record home in 1980. A great rock n roll band.

When I was 19 I had The Inmates First Offense LP. A guy who had a car stereo shop (he sold tapes and some records too) gave me the album. I thought it might be like most promo albums he got, which is to say "not too good". I was wrong though and First Offense was a keeper. I was struck by the soul element courtesy of Bill Hurley's voice. Bill's voice is what I call "an instrument" as it does so much more than provide words in sync with the instruments. It's wholly another instrument and commands center stage over everything else. It has nuance, it has power, it has a character larger than Bill. To me he's like Southside Johnny in several key ways and he is no less in any of them. Southside is a great gritty soul belter with nothing on the great Bill Hurley (is Bill more powerful?). I love this stuff and I am a guy that loves the excess and glory of Yes, ELP, and even early 10CC. But this direct to the cerebellum strong beat, gnarly twangy guitars, and infectious solid bottom just speaks to me. This stuff was out of time then and worked and that's why it works today just as well. This band was tight and spot-on with the perfect voice out front.
