I also like how Sukuna affects Yuji's development. The consequences of Sukuna's actions fall on his shoulders. So not only does he have to deal with the moral struggle between his beliefs and sukuna's actions, but the perception of the world that yuji needs to be executed is somewhat justified from an objective standpoint.

Finally, someone pointed this out. I always hate it when people are saying how Yuji shouldn't be executed and how he's not at fault, blah blah blah. They never think from the perspective of characters that is NOT the MC. Yugi is dangerous to the world because him being alive meant Sukuna being alive which equals to innocent lives being lost whenever Sukuna comes out. Yuji is dangerous and it's only natural the world wanted him dead.

@@WhiteTorn i see, you guys are men of culture as well. Gojo has a heavy god complex and it's actually all his fault. He literally made the giant atomic bomb stay in the middle of one of the biggest city in the world (Tokyo area -36 mln of people) and put the remote controller to the children sandbox, so one day, without any warnings, it can explode by coincidence. But simps prefer to simp to Gojo. He is literally nothing different to Dumbledore, to destroy one guy all his actions lead to Voldemort coming back (without Harry maybe it would be impossible), doing massacres, and in the end, Hogwart battle. All people had to die so Harry would die in the right moment. And Yūji case is similar: Gojo's gonna kill him in the right moment. But it bites in the ass: Yūji/Sukuna did what he did in Shibuya and there's no Gojo to kill him now. Actually, now Sukuna has a really good cards in his hand, if he can play it well we can see the ending where "good guys" (if we can call such those Jujutsu assholes) lose.

My favorite description of sukuna comes from the author themselves, in which they describe sukuna as a "walking natural disaster" such that nothing you can do will ever guarantee safety from him unless you specifically catch his interest and it will only ever be so he can use you for his own enjoyment. And unless you're ready to accept death at a moments notice it will always be a walk on the tightrope the entire time. They're like a lackadaisical version of muerem from Hunterxhunter.

They both have quite mysterious roots, we don't know all the details about their transition from humans to bad guys, their motives are not clearly laid out to us and their actions and plans are unpredictable and bring disaster to the world.

I feel like the inner demon troupe becoming friends with the mc is not a bad thing. Not necessarily. It just simply represents the theme of friendship, love and bonds surpassing hatred and the likes, and it's a good, positive message. However, JJK followed the other route: inner demon being what it is, down to its core, and its done right. Sukuna is the embodiment of evil, cold bloodedness and cruelty, and what makes him so scary is that the author showcased all of that.

@@wild5851 i think Naruto also did the demon troupe right in a sense. Kurama was an inner demon and his hatred is just. It's not that he was born cold blooded but after being attacked so many times because everybody wanted to monopolize his power, he came to hate humans. The boiling point was when Madara came and controlled him, making him massacre people in the Hidden Leaves and then both sides resented each other. So, when Naruto came and showed Kurama he was different than the rest, he changed to help Naruto specifically. In JJK it's different. Sukuna is just plain evil.

no, it's a bad thing. the idea that you can change a truly evil person by being nice to them is complete horseshit. I'd have an easier time believing that Kurama in the case of Naruto got stockholm syndrome from being trapped inside him for so long over him actually becoming friendly and amicable. And the tailed beasts in Naruto are basically the in universe equivalent of very malicious nuclear weapons, so its only natural that humans would squabble and fight and try to control them for their own gains. Naruto in particular has a really sickening "greater good" message behind every BS plotline that makes my eyes nearly roll out the back of my sockets and into my mouth. Instead of people coming into their own power and using that for their motivation it's all for "the hidden leaf village" or some group that it prioritizes over the individual. You're not going to convince a nuclear missile that it would be better off that it didn't explode "for the greater good". if some dumb human pushes the button it will fly off without a care in the world for how it affects it, and that's EXACTLY how the nine tailed fox should have happened. But because humans are gullible saps that always think that things will just work themselves out, but no writer that wants to make money is actually willing to write in a bad ending that would naturally occur from such an unbalance in power aside from a select few. I seriously, genuinely hope that JJK doesn't do an about face and suddenly decide that Sukuna is a nice guy that will just abandon his general callousness and desire for chaos because "pink hair boi was nice to me so i guess i won't go on a bloodthirsty rampage and murder everyone in the world."

@@PatrickRatman like i said, Kurama was corrupted because humans chased after his power and abused him for it, then blamed him for being dangerous when he drove them away. The idea here is Naruto was different from everyone else is what changed Kurama. That's why i'm saying it's not necessarily a bad idea. If you don't like it, that's fine. But it doesn't make Kurama's change objectively a bad idea. The creator put context behind the inner demon's hatred and not just being chaotic. For Sukuna, it's a completely different context - he's just pure evil and has no plans to make peace. It's just two different paths that were taken.

Sukuna works because he actually embodies the trope of "Inner Demon". He isn't a reluctant antagonist, he can't be redeemed and he doesn't give two shits who his host is. Yuuji will never be able to claim Sukuna's power without killing or extinguishing Sukuna's "will". It is Sukuna's power, and Sukuna isn't giving it up. I would like to say though, that all the "points against" Sukuna aren't really points against him. When Sukuna "helps" Yuuji in the fight against Mahito, he doesn't attack Mahito out of goodwill towards Yuuji, he attacks because he doesn't care whether either Yuuji or Mahito survive. Sukuna stands alone and doesn't need anyone, nor will he help anyone out of the goodness of his heart. When He helps Yuuji upon their first meeting, I think it was Sukuna establishing dominance and perhaps even trying to make Yuuji dependent on him. Sukuna was probably just feeling out Yuuji, and once he realised that Yuuji was not easy to manipulate, he lost all interest. But yes I agree with the overall statement; Sukuna is the Inner Demon trope done well, because he actually is an inner demon, with his own will, desires and character.

@@morgansheepman2403 Replying to you and Step B. since you made similar points, the problem with White was Ichigo's corruption via the synthetic hollow White entangling with his mother's soul, there's something insidious and savage in him. Ichigo being his own inner demon is a relatively unique twist, very Jungian, but White was originally vicious and self destructive as well as willing to flood Ichigo with power, a very different side of his spirit than Old Man Zangetsu who said he wanted to build Ichigo up but really limited him for his own protection. Once Ichigo began to accept White, they moved closer and closer to integration, culminating in their fusion in the Dangai and apparent dissolution afterwards. Their arc truly ends when Oetsu sorts them out into two different swords that fuse in Bankai. Lots of duality there, and while White's malice didnt stay, even the ostensibly 'good' Zangetsu was willing to sabotage and lie to Ichigo when it suited him.

Another thing that was done right is how when sukuna does something helpful it’s not because he is having a change of heart or was overcome by Yuji. It’s to build him as a stronger antagonist. Like when he attacked mahito it was purely to show how vengeful and powerful he was. He’s constantly being built up as a stronger antagonist, not a power up for the protagonist.

Allen from D.gray-man is in my opinion another interesting use of this trope. Especially since Allen and Nea are literally unable to coexist. Nea is very clearly a person with his own goals, though unlike Sukuna there's still potential Nea's intentions aren't truly evil and Allen and others are simply necessary sacrifices. Although Allen gets use of Nea's ark which is for sure helpful, Nea is a danger and a detriment to him. Plus Allen has inherited Nea's weaknesses as well and so is injured by things that wouldn't hurt humans. Plus the few times Nea takes over he doesn't do anything to help Allen and instead immediately starts trying to do his own thing.

There was a cannon episode where Kuruma confirmed that he purposely poured the chakra into Naruto at these critical moments - because his chakra resonates with hate/anger and the more Naruto uses, the weaker the seal on him gets.

Great Video, although I will say. I think you were a little harsh with your critique of “Kurama and Naruto”. When you really break it down, Sukuna was an actual person. Who lived a who life while Kurama is technically a piece of Half of an alien being, he’s Nature given personification. If his only goal is to rage so be it. I’ll admit Kishi lost the ball later on as initially Kura wanted to e scale and destroy so he really should’ve pumped more chakra into Naruto making him stronger and more susceptible over time. Don’t forget the whole plot with “Dark Naruto” and accepting yourself as well. Great video still though I really liked it, this is just my nerdy opinion.

I think the dynamic that naruto and kurama had works excellent FOR a series like naruto. But at the end of the day kurama's intentions and desires while established have very little sense of agency to them where as Sukuna does. This wasn't to say kurama was poorly done or inherently worse than Sukuna but the motivations and execution of these motivations are inherently different

To be fair, it's not like his demon had motivations to help him. We only got concrete confirmation that he is a "person" at the end of the Elfs arc. After that, we have him telling Asta to give up his body, and even when Asta refuses, he still siphons his demon powers to him. His demon arc is so minute and short that you could say that his demon is anything but a talking sword now. If he clashes with Asta more in the future, about when he should use the powers he is bestowing upon him, and they have dissenting opinions and motivations, i'll say yes, Leibe would be a person on his own. Sure, he'd be reborn later- but we dunno how long or when that would happen. 2. If Kurama pushed Naruto far enough with his Chakra- as seen with the fight against pain, eventually Kurama could break free and be free. Sure- the time against Pain and the fight which gave naruto KCM were "Safe" moments- since Naruto had both his mother and father's chakra protect him. If he didn't have that, Kurama would surely break free the moment Nines lost control.

But then with what we learned about yuujis parents it may be something more in the future who knows if there isn't something like that in terms of similiarity - but up till now we know that he looks like him becouse they share a body.

6:40 Ok to be fair, Kurama does have a plan. He's letting Naruto use his chakra because every time Naruto does he's weakening the seal placed on Naruto's body that is keeping him contained. The reason we don't know Kurama's plan is because Kurama has no reason to let Naruto and by proxy us the information as it would just be getting in the way of his plan. You could say that maybe we should have gotten an inner monolgue explaining this from Kurama's view but I think that would ruin the pacing that Naruto has. Besides it does end up coming up later regardless.

The idea of a evil curse granting situational power has been around waaaay earlier than Naruto. I mean Hulk is just a version of Jekyll and Hyde, both of which are this trope, along with Vampires/Werewolves, which have been around for centuries. Even if we're just talking Manga/Anime, cursed characters have STILL been around forever, from Mononoke Hime to Vampire Hunter D, to Berserk, hell Jojo stands are a form of a curse.

i like that Sukuna is an actual character. I remember being really REALLY confused before I watched jjk about why this pink hair dude had tattoos and why he is called a different name. I was like, well if they share the same body, why wouldn't people see them as the same person. But then I watched it. And I understood why he's so different. Sukuna is the main driving force of the story. People make their actions around him. Curses have to factor him into their plans. Jujutsu sorcerers have to factor him into their plans. He can bring benefit to both groups of people. He can also be a great obstacle to both groups and hinder BOTH of their progress. Sukuna truly follows no one. He follows his own plans that no one else truly knows. He is a wild card. A walking natural disaster. A walking ticking bomb. EVERYONE has to work themselves around Sukuna and Sukuna doesn't even have to actually be alive. He's not even there and he has people shaking in their boots. EVERYTHING in jjk happens because of Sukuna whether of not the characters know it. That kind of power is insane. It's not even just Sukuna's strength itself, people fear him which just gives him more strength. p.s. i love the thumbnail it just looks so cool esp since it's Sukuna caging Yuji and not the other way around

you just missed or ignored several of Sukuna's motivations and character moments in those "points against them". the first time Sukuna comes out the very first thing he decides to do when looking at the city nearby is to go there and massacre people. if Gojo wasnt around, thatd be another Shibuya incident. the whole switch out against the special grade was also full of agency from him. we see Itadori weighing the options as Sukuna tells him that if he comes out, he wont be used as a get-out-of-jail card, but will instead, first and foremost, kill all of Itadori's friends as soon as he gets the chance. even his final plan of getting the others out of the domain was meaningless against this, because Sukuna stays true to his words and decides to go kill them first thing as he gets out. Sukuna attacking Mahito was also a very clear display of character agency for him. it first shows him allowing Mahito to nearly kill his vessel out of spite, to later show him almost ending the arc's main antagonist on a whim. thats clearly intended to show us Sukuna's actions cant be swayed by any plot or character. he will do what he wants, every chance he gets, and its clearly stabilished as a wild card, not a tool for the protagonist to use. there is never a moment when Sukuna acts that he isnt actively working on his own goals and whims, and even when his destructive force can be used against Itadori's enemies, its made clear that all of them are in equal danger.

I think that while Sukuna is refreshing to the inner demon troupe, another great example of this is Berserk and Guts` inner demon which is just his lust for violence and general depravity. This imo is even better developed and should be looked as a gold standard for an inner demon troupe.

Where naruto faces kurama and makes a friend, Yuuji faces Sukuna and gets one shot, setting Sukuna's plan in motion and prepping him to be either the final or second-to-last villain.

I disagree with your Naruto take. At least in the beginning it is stated that the seal weakens every time Naruto uses the Chakra so Kurumas goal was to escape. Which happened in the pain fight and without Minato would have been really bad. Only after that we have the storyshift to the Talk no Jutsu where Kuruma became a friend. I get what you re trying to say though and Sukuna is absoulty built up different and will become the Main Antagonist but you re Naruto point is overshadowed by the fact that this series is finished.

Its unfair to put Asta's Devil as a simple roadblock since he is a character with actual motivations. Unlike Kurama ,who is always is the background cause only Naruto can communicate with him, Astas devil will be able to interact with characters other than Asta. Asta's devil isn't simply being asta's power bank, he is a character with a clear motivation which were created due to circumstances that led him to Asta in the first place(trying to Avoid spoilers here).

I personally believe the first count where Sukuna showed himself should not be a point dediction since Sukuna DID want to do something for himself, as he clearly said he was going to go out in to the world and take it over, having come alive again. The reasoning for him killing the curse was more of a power flaunt and him testing out his own strength again, especially judging Sukuna is clearly shown having no care for any creature other than himself, and Megumi.
