What is a donkey's nature, and how has its working life - cut off from socialising with others of its kind - affected its normal gregarious nature?

These animals have done nothing to us but literally help us build our societies and villages. As a Greek, I am ashamed of how ungrateful our behaviour to them is.

You are right, they have done a lot for humans and they don’t really have the respect from society as you would think they would have. I mean lions, bears get so many analogies and high respect and motivating metaphors but donkeys don’t have a lot of praise or love like horses and dogs, cats do. Makes sense. Add cows to that.

I’m amazed at the people who care for and help donkeys or any other animal. Donkeys have the most endearing eyes and faces. The bit about the donkeys suffering in silence really got to me. They ask for help, but how many people know how to listen to them, how to help them until the donkey can trust them to help??? What a story. It really got to me.

Don't misunderstand, but while you're absolutely correct in donkeys being sweet, though not so sure I'd call most donkeys 'innocent' due to their gregarious and VERY territorial behavior. Not sure if you know this about donkeys, but MANY livestock (sheep, goats, etc.) farmers have in recent years opted for a guard donkey over any guard dog. This is why I don't usually think of 'innocent' when donkeys are concerned: a donkey knows to WEAPONIZE his/her legs--especially the rear legs. What they do is line up their kick to the head of the wolf/coyote/dog, and if the donkey doesn't kill them with one kick, the pain (and LOUD yelp from the dog/coyote) will be enough to cause the remaining canine predators to stay away from the flock...because of that KILLER DONKEY :P Seriously though, they're one of my favorite animals. Amazing creatures.

We have 4 donkey love buckets… 2 are rescues. One of the rescues was abused. It’s been over 2 years and we still have to anesthetize her to have the ferrier do her feet. We aren’t giving up. One day she will trust again and not need to be drugged. The people who abused her got her as a baby and kept her for 12 years. Why get an animal you don’t intend to care for or abuse it? Will never understand why anyone abuses animals, children, etc. We are so blessed by our donkeys. I love this video. Her comments are so on point. I would love to visit this sanctuary someday for a working vacay. What a special place with special animals & special people!!!

@pennyfarthing1372 Жыл бұрын
She is referring to the way they tend to walk around with their heads hanging down looking deflated. The noise was meant to convey how the donkey appears to feel but that it was deceptive because these poor creatures still have bags of personality despite their subdued appearance. She didn't mean they look ugly or unpleasant. Hope that helps.

I've discovered donkeys on KZbin. I never met one in person, but now I would love to. They are fascinating and have attractive personalities. And they are beautiful! If I had a couple of small donkeys, I would hug them and scratch them behind the ears. I would take them for walks and if they got tired, I would carry them. They would have lots of treats!

What lovely eyes they have. It's good that these sanctuary donkeys can find companionship. Found on wikipedia: Working donkeys in the poorest countries have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years; in more prosperous countries, they may have a lifespan of 30 to 50 years. Donkeys are adapted to marginal desert lands. Unlike wild and feral horses, wild donkeys in dry areas are solitary and do not form harems.

I own a small herd of domestic donkeys... everything she says I have also found to be true. Donkeys are naturally clan animals, that is in the wild they live in family groups, not herds like horses. It's cruel to keep donkeys singly. Each of mine has a different personality from the others, and the depth of love they are capable of has to be experienced to be fully understood. They do form bonds as buddies, and sometimes a mule will bond strongly with a donkey. In any case I am glad you are there for the Corfu donkeys. We are hoping to become a member of a US based donkey rescue organization... in the meantime using ours for recreational riding and instruction.
@Pro31103 жыл бұрын
Considering that a stallion will kill his predecessor's young so his will be the only foals in the herd, a herd of horses IS a family group. Donkey's live in herds of family groups, just like their cousins do, and it's cruel to keep any member of the equine family in solitude.

I worked in the donkey sanctuary here in Manchester U.K. for a year or so. I had to leave due to allergies, straw etc . It was understood that anyone wanting to adopt a donkey had to take 2 for companionship. We had two brought in (Henry and George). They had to be integrated with the herd , but whenever separated would make such a din ,to be put back together again ! Hearing about these donkeys that never got together with each other made me feel so sad for them !

Grandma had one and uncles were treating it badly when I was a child, they were poking with sticks, beating, chaining it under sun and I moved it where it could hide from sunlight, bringing green grass, water and caring as I could do as a child everyday, I was the only person it wasn't afraid of, one day they sold it and I can't forget it going two steps, stopping, turning to me and heehawing again and again, even my uncles couldn't make fun of me that I cried that day, I just prayed the new owner would look after it well.

working too on a donkey sanctuary with mostly old donkeys... yes everyone has their own personality, some even a sense of humor... and as it is policy in our sanctuary, whenever possible we let them grieve in their own pace... some are even burying their former friend in straw, some staying still and refuse to eat for a day (the only time i knew that a donkey refuses to eat...) some are Braying the whole day... i'm totally sure they are aware of death and lost, of love and hate... and when they trust you, they show it...

I did that once, showed a companion animal to it's dead friend. IT IS NOT the best for the animal left behind. Yes, they will search for the one gone, and mourn when they realize it is not coming back. But when they see the lifeless body of a friend, they just take it too hard. The pet left, upon seeing his friend dead, immediately got incredibly sick. So I advise all...don't show the lifeless body of a friend to the pet still alive. It breaks their heart I believe.

Lost all respect for her in the end when she said she shows a dead donkey to an alive one, why’d you hurt them more? All animals have emotions even if they don’t have intellect. Never ever let one animal see his/her kind when the other passes away.

if they do not show them, they do not know what happened and can be in great stress for days which can lead to loss of apetite which can lead to death. That is why they must show them so at least they know and can have closure and move on.

Simba, yet Jesus chose to ride a donkey for His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, because to ride a donkey symbolized one's peaceful arrival to a city. In the Old Testament, the wicked prophet Baalam's life was repeatedly saved by his cautious donkey. When Baalam became angry and wanted to hurt the animal, an angel appears and tells him that if not for the donkey the angel would've slain the evil Baalam on the spot.

Yeshua said that it would be better for a millstone to be tied around their neck and cast in to the sea that to hurt one of these little ones that believe on me. Well, hurting children and animals are the lowest thing to me. And i promise you, these animals know Yeshua very well. They know God. So love all of these precious ones. They are are a gift from the Father. And he actually put them here before us. Some people need to think about these things !!
