There are no words for how beautiful this song is. I was blessed to have seen this band back in the 90s in a bar. The bar was a dive, painted black to hide all the imperfections, and normally it was a place for drinking, fighting, hard dancing, etc. But that night, this band transformed the space, by their music, their sentiment, and the spirituality that filled their lives. I felt like was transported to another world that night. Wonderful memory.

Rosie Blanco It is wonderful but there are others eg "someday coming" , "the lakes of Canada" to name just two ! Should have been as popular as 10 000 Maniacs/Natalie merchant.

thank you!! I' ll check them out :)
@keithbate94059 жыл бұрын
Rosie Blanco Wow quick reply ! Lucky you that you have not heard of them. of course "old music now" if you wish to hear what I am enjoying now then try the following three songs by three different artists' 1) First Aid Kit (Sweden) " A long time ago" (2014) Klara sings this wonderful song beautifully.. Always brings a tear to my eye. 2) Agnes Obel (Denmark) "just so" I cannot stop whistling this as I walk around the Super market. Short but sweet and very catchy ! 3) London Grammar (UK) "if you wait" (2013) to be honest I could have picked around 6/7 tracks for this group. For me "The Innocence Mission de jour" different genre less folky more pop/trip hop. But Hannah has something in common with Keren both wonderful singers. happy listening !!

Anyone who listens to the Innocence Mission knows that Karen Peris is one of the greatest, most underrated songwriters of all time. Her lyrics stand on their own. I have wondered if this song is about Mother Mary... because the IM are Catholic, and back then, their songs were more openly religious. Or it could be about her own mother. She's written other beautiful songs about her mother, too. This is a very precious band!

The day is over and still so heavy on the mind In flew glowing, smiling mother, butterfly in yellow To join the frowning cactus crowd Finding flowers even there to flutter round I thought, isn't mother grand? The way she flies and flies Into the sting of the cold and the prick of the barbed wire Isn't mother grand to gladly fly and swiftly fly Into the sting of the cold and the prick of the barbed wire The day is over and still goes passing through the mind: In came glowing, smiling mother, sure and kind To rouse us, to give ourselves out and to cry Birth to warm intentions, worthless otherwise Oh, the lives that brush against us, pass us by and by The friends who may or may not come if we would first invite Oh, to open doors, to always gladly fly and fly Into the sting of the cold and the prick of the barded wire

I wonder about its meaning. As a new mother my interpretation is quite literal. I am Mother Butterfly and I would smile and gladly fly through barbed wire for my child any day. I will find the nurture and beauty in life like those flowers in the cactus, for my child. I dedicate him this song. Gives me so many feelings I'm sure I will get back when I hear it in the future and remember his baby days when I played it to soothe him...
@electronbluepearl85913 жыл бұрын
Not sure of the meaning, but I always had the sense that it was about a mother comforting a child after a nightmare. It's an incredibly beautiful song, whatever the meaning.
