The INSANE Evolution Of Mario Kart 8: How Much It CHANGED (Wave Six DLC Review)

With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe FINALLY Coming To An End, it is time to take a look at Wave 6 of the DLC. It added the MOST new characters, has some amazing new tracks, and has a lot going for it. However, not all of it is great. Is it worth getting? Most importantly, did the DLC make up for the lack of a proper Mario Kart 9 on Nintendo Switch? Hopefully we might see a Wave 7 in the future, but as it stands this is the end for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart Tour.

Yeah, I'll say it: I never had any complaints about this DLC (After all, 48 extra tracks is still 48 extra tracks at the end of the day), but with how much each wave improved, it 100% went from "good deal with some caveats" to "truly worth it".

Fun fact about Peachette is that she is absolutely going to be meta as her stats are the exact same as Yoshi and Birdo who are the meta picks, wave 6 also only made changes the invincibility stat and nothing else so Yoshi, Birdo, Peach, Daisy and Peachette are still the best characters

Nintendo kart isn't an awful Idea, but I agree that it probably shouldn't happen. I like the Idea of keeping it as a mainly mario game, but adding guest stars and tracks from outside mario as extras like in MK8D is good. If other series want to be in a racing game, they could make their own, which lead to games like Kirby Air Ride, which takes a lot of unique spins on the kart racing format.

Between the new characters along with Piranha Plant Cove, Rosalina's Ice World, and Wii Rainbow Road, this is by far my favorite wave of the DLC. There were a couple choices I wasn't that fond of, but SNES Bowser's Castle 3 was so good, it felt like it was made for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It's so nice to have Diddy Kong and Funky Kong back, and I'm so happy Pauline's finally in a game that's worth my time! It's honestly a bittersweet moment for me, this game has been a part of my life for almost a decade. I was 20 when I got 8 and my journey with 8 Deluxe ends just three days shy of my 30th birthday. It's hard to believe we've been playing this game for almost a decade. Grump. I feel old. :P The DLC did start off quite rough, but it definitely ended quite beautifully, and I'll say, I'm happy with the DLC! Worth it! For the next Mario Kart, I definitely want a story mode, or the mission mode from DS return. Some single player content would be a welcome addition. I want Mario Kart 9 to be what Odyssey and Wonder were for 2D and 3D Mario. I want this to be the next step that'll push the series to new heights unseen. And some tracks inspired by Odyssey would get me smiling! :) I do have a small concern about the possibility of the next game using the finish it later approach and removing most of the content for online multiplayer. I hope the disaster that was Battle League taught Nintendo a valuable lesson.

A pretty good ending to the dlc and Mario kart 8 (unless Nintendo decides to add more dlc but I doubt that) even if I am really weirded out by them cutting piranha plant pipeline. Mario kart 8 is by far the best entry in the Mario Kart Series but I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I’m ready for something new. I’m ready for Mario kart 9. I feel like Mario kart 8 is it a very similar position to smash ultimate because I keep saying people say “how are they ever going to top it?“ and the answer to that is very simple. There not. Most likely they’re just going to go back to doing a normal Mario kart and I’m perfectly fine with that. I don’t know what’s next for the Mario Kart Series after this but I’m excited to find out although I really hope it’s not Nintendo kart because that is an absolutely terrible idea

Man. I saw it all. I was 7 years old when the original game launched on the wii u. It was a strong pillar of my childhood and grew my obsession with the series like never before. I was initially disappointed when instead of a new Mario kart, we got this one again on the switch. And I was even more disappointed when instead of a new mario kart, we got dlc that had the art style of rabbids go home. But now that the final wave of that dlc is out and the game is officially finished. As a 16 year old today, I take a look back at all the progress and build up this game has had over 9 straight years, and a tear nearly develops in my eye. Thank you Mario Kart 8. Thank you for being there in my formative years. For offering people a mario kart only one month after the switch launched. And for turning yourself from the game with Pink Gold Peach to the game with Funky Kong. I’m still critical of the dlc and do wish Nintendo put more effort into how it looked and somewhat even how it played. But ultimately, it’s the last hurrah of a game that was always meant to be the ultimate Mario kart. And I am gleefully anticipating whatever there is to come in the future. Here’s to another 9 years!

Despite the flaws of the Booster Course Pass, it has been quite a journey that made 8DX be more capable of standing its ground against Wii in terms of which game between the two is the best. From Super Mushroom-at-best and Sad Cloud-at-worst track selection and presentation to Super Star-at-best and Luigi-at-worst track selection and presentation, Nintendo not only stepped up their game since BCP Wave 1 and even after 2022 proved to be terrible, but also got the shills shaking in angering silence as those who cared and spoke up proved to be right all along, as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ends off terrifically wonderful. Awaiting for Mario Kart 9, the ultimate Mario Kart, everyone can play as fan favorites like Pauline on fan favorite tracks like SNES Bowser Castle 3 or Wii Rainbow Road and conceptualize Mario Kart 9 at the same time (such as implenting and even mixing elements from Double Dash and the Arcade GP series like the dual kart mechanic and variety of special items). This may be exaggerated, but I just had to point this out because of how Mario Kart 8 and its port went through such an inspiring journey from nearing the bottom of the barrel for Nintendo as to becoming a titan for Nintendo thanks to people like Demeech. As we wait for Mario Kart 9, the BCP is now around lively and vivid.

I won't lie. This game getting DLC so late reallllly ticked me off. Because I still stand by that if they were going to give this game DLC to hold us over... it could've been a bit sooner. But the overall Booster Course Pass ending up solid really turned me around. And it just makes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe an overall even more amazing game (getting a good Mario Kart roster again is so satisfying alone lel). Really hopeful for Mario Kart 9... or 10... or whatever they call it. Because I think Nintendo will bring some interesting new ideas. Its all in due time though...

Since you mentioned a hypothetical story mode for Kart 9 near the video's end , I would also add that it would he nice to add some brand new characters who belong to the franchise's fictional species, come from different places shown across the series and also are dedicated to racing to make the races seem grand and important around the Mushroom world (let's make an example: Here's Eden the Yoshi, she's from Yoshi Island, is a top racer and in-universe seen as racing's "it girl"), and also add unlockable characters, vehicles and even cups (separate from the classic 8 ones) in the story mode that are unobtainable otherwise, they could be: - Mandatory: Like unlocking Bowser Jr. after beating him in a race to progress the story - Optional: Like finding Birdo in a hidden area and challenging her to unlock her. - Post game: Continuing my example, Eden guides and supports the story's main character [maybe a Mii] and after beating the story mode, you can go back and try racing a whole cup 1v1 at maximum speed against her and unlock her as a reward

I could see the launch title being Mario kart 8 Ultimate. They just need to double the amount of battle course and redo all the textures to be in 4K and that would be a great system seller. I would also wish for 2 more cups to be added so the box could say over 100 tracks but do not expect that to happen. I think the devs need a break after all of this and don’t expect Mariokart X (Tour was MK9) 2-3 years out since it takes the devs about 3-4 months to do 2 cups meaning 8 cups would take upwards of a year and likely more to ensure everything has polish with a new engine and mechanics.

The whole DLC has been a mixed bag for me. Too quantity over quality for the most part, characters weren't added until half way in, no new kart parts, many tracks getting their designs or concepts butchered and so on. The fact that they didn't add even a single kart part when the selection has been stagnant for the past half decade is gonna make it alot easier to let go of this game so Nintendo can finally start fresh without having every race being teddy buggys on rollers.

I think a cool idea for the next mario kart would be to merge tracks, like in smash. It would be the ultimate way to celebrate over 30 years of mario kart and would make sense considering it’s the tenth game (if you count tour). Imagine racing through toad’s factory and then suddenly the track shifts to airship fortress!

Mario Kart 8 went through quite the ride, no? I wouldn't say that the Acorn Cup was really all that bad, though it felt admittedly tame in comparison to Spiny Cup. I see you have a preference for Pauline. Hm, hm, she does look pretty, but my personal favorite inclusion is Diddy Kong. Yes, he _should_ have been in Mario Kart 8 long ago, but seeing him in this final wave is a much appreciated. I'd say this makes up for his absence in Mario Golf: Super Rush. I think that 8 Deluxe is practically a perfect experience; not my favorite Mario Kart (that is 64), but is filled to the brim with content and the best roster in the series. Going forward, I wish to see most of these guys return (especially Diddy and Birdo), and maybe focus on a new mission mode. We'll see what happens in due time. Good review, Demeech.

It’s entirely possible that the waves were always designed to improve over time, and complaints may have had nothing to do with that. I’m not saying that’s definitely the case, just that it’s possible. Every Kart game starts with its weakest cup and gradually gets more interesting/complex as it goes. But I will admit that it does seem likely that the feedback was heard. Either way we all win because the complete package ended up being pretty great overall.

Yeah, I question why they just made Peachette playable when Dixie could've gone well with others. At least Peachette, like from Tour, has her own unique, stiff-sounding voice clips that make it clear she's not exactly Peach, but Toadette struggling to imitate Peach's lines. Hope by Mario Kart 9, they take the Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled route and just bring fan favorites instead. Albeit without any sluggish currency systems.

They could potentially surprise is with a bonus cup or something, you know, just to round the number of courses nicely up to 100. Imagine selling this game "Enjoy over 100 tracks in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, triple digits!" Otherwise, they could just give the Battle mode the same treatment, with 8 DLC battle arenas. Honestly, as the game is now, it already feels complete, it finally got what 8 Deluxe was lacking: more tracks. Demeech pointed out in his review of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ft T&D (Mario Kart Origins) that the game could benefit from post-launch support, and we got there. And now that the Booster Course Pass can finally be enjoyed in its full form, it's about time for a new PROPER Mario Kart game, because mobile apps or VR home circuit spin-offs do not count.

@@WritingCountingOriginal Not at all, didn't mean it that way, but one of them is an amalgamation of the entire series, and the other one is more a VR experience (although a Home Circuit inspired track would be neat). Tour is by no means a bad game despite being Pay-to-win, it's also how the Booster Course Pass exists. But however, if we're talking "Mario kart 9", it needs to be a console game and above all, something new.

I’m disappointed with the lack of new purple characters we could have had Nabbit or even the Mii suits of Waluigi and Nabbit or they finally could have added purple Yoshi

The more I think about it though, the more I'm kinda annoyed about Peachette being one of the characters instead of DK Jr. Think about it, DK Jr. would have literally been the PERFECT choice. Not only was there already a Donkey Kong theme with the other 3 characters, but DK Jr. was one of the original characters from the very first Mario Kart on SNES, and the only one from that first game to not return, not to mention he also would have been one of the most unique characters in 8DX because he has the whole unique Pixel Sprite gimmick to him. He would have literally been the most perfect choice, whereas Peachette...makes absolutely zero sense. That annoys me. If DK Jr. was never an option that existed in the first place then whatever, any of the other Tour characters are pretty interchangeable to me, but in this case the perfect choice was RIGHT THERE. Oh well, not like it changes much anyway, just would have been the most satisfying lol.

Also weird how there's exactly ONE original Tour Track that isn't preserved in the BCP, Piranha Plant Pipeline. Even seems like it was originally supposed to be added based on the Prefix leak and other stuff. So it's really weird that it was the only one excluded, but also seems like it was...planned and then intentionally excluded?

If people truly want an idea of just how far Mario Kart 8 as a whole has come... just compare the initial base character roster on the Wii U to now. It's honestly insane how much this game has grown over the years.

I was expecting Nintendo to throw the Flame Runner in unannounced alongside Funky Kong and I'm kinda depressed that they didnt. But other than that I am very happy with the new tracks and the DLC. Only thing I am dissapointed about is that we never got any new karts, wheels or gliders. Which is a shame

@@Demeech I really don’t think that enjoying the DLC despite its slight downgrade in visual quality makes anyone a shill. Like that’s something so small that most people don’t even care about, only really critical people like you, the gameplay was still the same in wave 1 as it is in base game and all the rest of the DLC (albeit the track selections were pretty lame) and that’s the real draw of Mario Kart. While the person saying this could have been a bit nicer sure, you could also just learn how to take criticism and not villainize them for having a different opinion.

Internally Mario Kart Tour is considered Mario Kart 9, so when we get the next game it won’t be called Mario Kart 9 but maybe 10, or it might have a completely different naming scheme entirely.

I completely disagree with wii rainbow road because all they had to do was pastelize the tour textures but they couldn't even do that. They completely missed all of the little details in the road like the stars on the sides, the more complex tiling, the transparency of the road to let you see the stars through it.

I feel like 10 will release in 2025/2026, assuming it has the same dev time as the previous games of 3 years, and the mario kart team stopped working on it in late 2022 Also, the reason the arcade gp courses don't return is because they aren't mainline unlike the other 9(+ those courses suck gameplay-wise)

Honestly I have been ready to move on from Mario Kart for a long time. It is insane to me how it's been nearly a decade from its original outing. This industry either releases games too frequently or way too infrequently. This and so many others fall into the latter.

I think it was a good wave to end on overall. Nintendo even gave us some bonus goodies like the jukebox and new Mii costumes. Wii Rainbow Road is a fantastic track to end and Bowser Castle 3 is the best SNES remake ever. I'm always glad to see DK Mountain too. But Rome and Madrid really hurt this wave. They're only average city tracks, which really hurts coming off of great ones in the past two waves like Singapore, Athens, and Vancouver.
