I worked on this film. Unfortunately my scene was in the 3 hours removed from the original cut. 😢 However, the feeling on set was electrice, dynamic, and fun. It was a fantastic experience and everyone involved loved the work that they were doing. I saw the film at a premiere on The 25th and it surpassed my expectations which were already high. This really is a great movie, and thank you for this look into how it was made.

The "controversy" is ridiculous. Films, especially sci-fi and horror films, have been using real-world clips for decades to make the fictional world feel more grounded and real. Garth Edwards quite literally shot Monsters in the storm ravaged Gulf Coast.

I think for this one it's because it's still an ongoing issue that hasn't been resolved. Several years later and it's still making the news for the people that lived their still not getting any help of compensation. So I think that's why it's such a pain point. A western film can make money off of their tragedy while their lives continue to effected by that event.
@joannot6706
@joannot6706 Жыл бұрын
Agreed, what are people thinking about this controversy? That the crew are happy the Beyrouth explosion happened? The reference is used for a scene in the film that's supposed to be a tragedy and a vector of massive change, This choice of reference could have brought up further discussions about the real catastrophe which is a good thing, instead they directed that potential discourse towards what? So weird
@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager Жыл бұрын
@@joannot6706 well I think the issue is it's not even just a reference for a shot. It looks like they used the actual footage and then just spruced up some buildings around it to make it look more sci Fi. Like for reference it's fine, but they basically just kinda copied the footage. Which makes me think it's a mistake and I never saw it in the film itself

Thank you for this wonderful review! It provided a lot of context about this movie that I was looking for and contains very well researched clips and sidenotes! I didn't enjoy The Creator while I was watching it because of countless flaws I saw in storytelling, internal logic, plot holes and character development, however, your review made me look at it from a whole different perspective! (though, having another screenwriter look over the script may not have been a budget killer for Gareth Edwards...) I'm still curious about all the Japanese references in this movie, also Ken Watanabe plays a big role and speaks Japanese among people from Thailand, Nepal, Cambodia and Indonesia, and even the credits at the end are shown in English + Japanese. Do you know why Japanese has been so heavily emphasized?

Worked on some this movie. As a client, Gareth Edwards and team were the best. They pushed quality but also were extremely collaborative and clearly understood the strengths and limits of post production CGI. It felt like real filmmaking and was night and day from some other big tentpole productions where changes were all over the place with no regard for time, budget, or the actual workflow/artistry. Gareth and team THANKED ME PERSONALLY for doing some extra work on a shot last min. This film will always hold a special place in my career/heart.

This guy worked in VFX, not a director just a VFX artist in the UK, for almost ten years. In an interview he said that while he regrets spending so long in VFX too scared to take the risk of directing, he also sees now how useful that time is by knowing exactly how to work in tandem with VFX when directing. Instead of the usual tactic of leaving everything to post-production, he knows exactly how his shots can work best with the VFX that comes later and there isn’t too much miscommunication or burden on the VFX artists.

It is fun to see quite a lot of recent productions like The Creator, Rogue One, Andor, Oppenheimer, Tenet, Dune, Asteroid City, Triangle of Sadness, etc. move back to shooting more and more in-camera and on-location whilst other, often more expensive productions lean heavily on the seemingly cheaper greenscreen or "volume" methods like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, recent Marvel movies and shows, Red Notice or Death on the Nile. And funnily enough the on-location/in-camera productions are in my opinion nearly always the better movies.

He revolutionized filmmaking... by... being sensible. Not wasting money on equipment, sets and locations that he didn't need. And by returning to the notion of "picture lock" in postproduction before firing up the VFX brunt work. It may feel like a "well duh!?" moment. But I do hope someone at studio executive offices watches this carefully. Although. While I keep returning to watch his films. I do also get that, they tend to not be the box office behemoths that Disney and the like want. He doesn't really do the crowd pleasing billion dollar revenue things. I think it will make its money back. But I am not expecting End Game turnout of audiences. But with a sensible budget. It shouldn't have to. I am just thankful that there are people doing big Sci Fi epics without getting bogged down in gear like Nolan and staying sensible with VFX and production unlike most studios.

Not a fan of the aspect ratio, but would be cool to watch it on a three screen system. They tried so hard to make this look like modern movies, which sadly equates to muted, clinical images. It just seems like the cameras of today try so hard to make images as flat as possible, and every film looks the same. Look at films such as E.T, Blade Runner, The Shining, Annie, Alien, etc. Those were shot on the same film stock, but had looks unique to each film. Most films shot today look so similar, regardless of narrative. Is this a product of how Sony's prosumer cams render images, or how everyone wants to make films look "cinematic" with one method? Kudos to everyone who worked on this film, as it shows that gear matters less than the story. But if only they made the image stand out from the rest of the crowd.
@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager Жыл бұрын
I would say the image probably comes down to art direction as movies like the batman and dune have a very stylized look and production design. I mean Dune used grey screen instead of green screen so it wouldn't effect the light temperature. But to be fair to this film, they accomplished a lot for how much their budget was. I'll have to see this in theaters first before I can confirm the modern movie look you're referencing. But honestly, when I saw the trailer for this I liked the art direction of it. WE hall see!

@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager Жыл бұрын
No, it was shot with "Ready for IMAX" cameras. Which is how most movies made for IMAX are filmed. Not every movie plays at IMAX theaters. Even though this one was filmed with a really wide format for screens like screenx, from what I've seen of trailers of this film in IMAX theaters it's going to be reformatted to IMAX, so I could be wrong but I don't really think you'll have black bars and if there are they won't be that large. There are 2 categories for IMAX usually: 1. Shot with IMAX 2. Filmed for IMAX For the IMAX “Film for IMAX” program, which defines the cinema cameras that can shoot for its theaters, the production is supervised by IMAX, which determines the protocol, best practices, and methodologies for shooting the format. At the end of the day all IMAX really is, is a specific format in a premium viewing experience. Now, which method to capture that IMAX format in is an entirely different question and one probably ending up at the most premium level filming on actual IMAX cameras. But no, I won't throw around the IMAX term for a movie not already having the intention of being played in IMAX theaters. The Creator has been on the IMAX 2023 slate for a while

But, this could have been a cool TV series with fleshed out characters and story ( I guess) , but as a movie it's basically a budget tech demo with a half baked art direction and even worse writing and plot. The visuals were very good. I can see a possible sequel but there were so many plot holes it was hard to care.

We got to see real close the equipment they were using and they had a big drone with the FX3 mounted on it that was quite impressive.

Also. I remember watchin a QnA with Edwards after a screening of Monsters at Stockholm Film Festival. He was asked what he used to shoot the film on. And he sighed. And responded something like: "Yeah, it is kind of the most boring aspect of movie-making. We used a depth of field adaptor on a digital camera. Next question." I don't remember the exact words. It was 15 or so years ago. But the sentiment was there. Even then. The camera was a means to an end. He used that camera setup for that film. and clearly, he continued to pick equipment according to what he needs for each film. No real baggage involved. An Alexa 65 for Rogue One. An FX3 for The Creator. If the FX3 was available for his Star Wars film, he probably would have used it. Just watched this movie. I think it was visually stunning (like top 10 all time sci fi aesthetic) but suffers in terms of story by being a movie about AI whose development started before and was released during a period when our understanding of what AI actually is and how it will affect the world is more refined and based in reality. AI cyborgs feel like a dated sci fi idea to me. Also the barrel with arms and legs was kinda funny.

@@ExtremeMadnessX it’s not sapient AI that I called dated, it’s sapient AIs shoehorned into humanoid bodies with almost zero acknowledgement of what AI in the real world actually is and no extrapolation of or even nod to what those AIs might become, humanoid AIs powerful enough to become entire nation states that wage wars but that are comedically fallible in many ways including having physically accessible standby switches on their necks. This kind of dissonance kills the film and is why I called it dated. And saying that stories are a 100 years old isn’t a great argument against something feeling dated at a time in human society when technology is moving so rapidly that every new decade seems to have an entirely different paradigm to the last

@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager Жыл бұрын
Could be just how they are showing it for the previews and for ScreenX. A lot of films are shot with the intention of converting to multiple formats. Like when you watch an Oppenheimer trailer, it's not in the IMAX format yet.
@SmallerSoul
@SmallerSoul Жыл бұрын
@@FrameVoyager Indeed, but that wouldn't be the case in this instance. The Creator was shot and finished at an anamorphic 2.78:1. Oppenheimer was shot natively at 1.43 and 2.20 (for different film stocks), but all non-IMAX venues just show the film in 2.20 to better suit their screens. The only way to adhere to an IMAX height screen for anamorphic-shot productions is to either crop horizontally or fabricate new vertical information in post (which Dune Part I did on a few occasions). My local IMAX gives a disclaimer on their website noting The Creator will be presented in 2.78:1 to set expectations. This is in no way downplaying the other advantages IMAX venues have like the audio quality, or increased screen size inherent to being an IMAX venue at all. By all means, IMAX is probably among the best ways to watch it; I just find their "shot for IMAX" marketing a bit deceptive

Not nice filmic grain either, it's a dirty digital splotchy noise. Not to the point of total distraction, but it is definitely there in some scenes. Decent movie though. Solid 7 out of 10. VFX inconsistent but overall pretty good. Lot's of expository crap in there for the dummies in the crowd. Some stupid logic jumps too. Better than most superhero trash though. Some great performances despite a pretty rote and predictable script. The 2 leads are great. Its extremely bad taste and i am GLAD that you covered it in this informing video!!

Just wanted the story to travel and have some real connection, he has all the shots for a great film but script and performances let it down for me. He should have had his wounds connected clearly to loss and shown his turning and reason for AI distain. They should have shown his infiltration and their relationship as he neared closer to her terrorist father They should have explored his conflict more and shown that he had loss and pain but enough wriggle room to exploit and change/grow. The message of the story should have been more focused on something specific, horrors of humanity or fear of difference or how love can bridge culture…something. The film was vague, but I will show it to my kids and save on showing an endless catalogue of cool anime and sci-fi as it’s all in here visually. @@FrameVoyager Yes! Like any "luxury" choice, it's just revealing & relaxing to see it appear for a few seconds. Just to know it's there. Just to have proof that the director can go there if they ever choose to - no studio bounds.

So, so wanted to like this film. Unfortunately, can't say that I did. Yes the special effects and the imagery were stellar, but that is the only thing that I can praise it for. The theme and how it was dealt with, particularly the ending, left me quite disappointed and angry. The message this film sends to the world is: robotic AI (good); living human beings (evil and unworthy). I had hoped this film would have highlighted the dangers of AI and why we need to control it at every turn or put the brakes on it altogether. Instead it only highlighted the folly of mankind.
