The Baron transition from "interior light" to the "black sun light" was awesome as well as the transition from the Bene Gesserit women. They did a great job of transporting us to an alien world with different light perspectives.

your videos are so great, I've obviously heard a lot of things about the IR scenes in this film but you always manage to have an added bit of information or a new perspective on something, was the same with the black and white for Oppie, lots of people talking about B+W but very few about cooler or warmer tones of it. Would love to see an in-depth breakdown of the cinematography of Dune: Part Two when it is widely available on digital and physical media.

🙌 the nerd in me also wants to point out that Herbert created The Harkonnen homeworld to be a very stark, very shadowy and lack of vibrancy. Love this take in the movie!

This camera setup sounds similar to the setup used to create the glowing retina effect on replicant's eyes in Blade Runner

how objects look in the infrared spectrum is something that is fairly highly studied in infrared astronomy and in military applications. There are a good number of ground and space-based telescopes that observe in the infrared spectrum due to the unique information that it can provide. For example, the James Webb space telescope, among other missions, is looking at planets to see if they contain methane in their atmosphere, which spectrally is identifiable in the infrared band. For the military context, fabrics are either innately or treated to be a more natural shade in near-infrared to prevent soldiers lighting up like a Christmas tree when they're observed under night vision or thermal imagers. Of course, the costume designers can't exactly make everything out of NIR-treated Codura nylon, so they likely had quite a lengthy search to find suitable materials.

You can actually buy a relatively cheap camera, send it into a company, and theyll peel the ir filter off. Then just shoot in monochrom with a red filter and with enough harsh sunlight, everyone looks like this!

the infrared filter was a custom project done by the filter god Ron at Birns & Sawyer. same man who made the Nope infrared filter

The black and white in the movie was distracting to me. Instead of following the story, I felt the effect was arbitrary, annoying, and unjustified.
