So, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains at least 87,000 tons of garbage. The average Toyota Corolla weighs 2,837.5 lbs. -about 1.41875 tons 87,000 ÷ 1.41875 = That's at least 61,322 Toyota Corollas!

@@D0NCH33T0 It's a joke only RLL viewers would know, but I know what it feels not to understand the joke, and so I'll explain. 😂 The narrator of RLL, Joseph, has what has come to be known as an 'obsession' with Toyota Corrollas and often usues them as a form of measurement or for comparison with weight or height. E.g 'that's more than ___ Toyota Corrollas stacked on top of each other.' Sam from Wendover Productions has his own little 'obsession' with planes, and so his viewers use that as a joke too. I refer to his channel as both RLL and Wendover are closely related given the creators of both channels are friends IRL (from what I know and have come to see). A bit complicated, IK. That is still an estimate, and to be fair, likely made by so-called "'environmentalists"....so while immense, it may be a heavy estimate. For example, you can't just say "2x the size of Texas" without defining the minimum density threshold. Accuracy is just important, regarding anything. If you overstate something, you set things up for an easier reversal of public opinion later.

I think it is important to note that the VAST majority of ocean pollution comes from china and a few other SE asian countries. While I hate polluters no matter where they are to truely address the issue we much recognize where the trash is coming from. Im no greenist fanboy justice warrior but... if people would simply stop behaving like utter dipsticks - just that - would probably solve a LOT of problems without anybody having to change anything in their living status or life quality... If there is no PET canister anywhere and im not headding to a place where i know there is one , i throw my bottle into the garbage, which is not "the right way" but better than throwing it just on the gound because #yolo

Just 10 rivers are carrying 90% of the plastic entering the oceans, a study has found. Two of them are in Africa - the Nile and the Niger - while the others are in Asia: the Indus, Ganges, Amur, Mekong, Pearl, Hai he, Yellow and Yangtze

I have a really dumb question. Why can't we just collect all this floating garbage and melt it into ingots ? in my humble opinion, this would clean up the current problem while all the smart people work on the microscopic problem and future floating islands. When the solution is found for what to do with all the collected garbage, the ingots are waiting to be processed.

A little tip. Eat whole non packaged food. It uses no plastic. Plus it is really good for you and it is almost impossible to get fat of it because it contains fiber and fiber make you feel full. Unlike potatoes chips where you can eat the entire bag and more.

Why dont we use our industrial fishing fleets to cleanup those patches? Those boats collect thousands of tons of tiny sardines in 10 minutes.. faster than blue whales.
@Syltarius Жыл бұрын
Because most of the plastic is just to small to be collected with nets. I guess some type of vacuum cleaner would be needed for that

When recycled plastic become valuable enough, entrepreneurs will develop methods to reclaim it. One viable idea is a recycling plant ship that drives across the garbage sucking it up inside, drying it, sorting it by wind/weight/heat, melting the recycled plastic into blocks, offloading the remaining trash to trash ships (or, more likely, compresing this material into a form that is solid and more dense than water, then discharging it overboard to sink to the ocean depths), and offloading the recycled plastic blocks to transport ships. This scenario will happen when there is a decent profit margin. Someone (probably Bezos, Branson, or Musk) will get rich(er) from this free supply of plastics, and be praised as a humanitarian and saviour of the planet in the process. Heck, they will probably win a Nobel Prize for it. Of course you have to believe in Capitalism for this to work. The progressive, socialists, and idiot tree hugging environ-mental-ists will start the reclamation before it is economically feasible and bankrupt the system.

@@Ryan-ij3fn Wrong! there are no new landfills in Western countries.... are you from the 1950's USA and all rich countries have been sending 80-90% of their garbage to the third world since 1993. In the late 80's and early 90's NYC and all major US cities used to send their garbage on a barge and dump in the sea. Since the early 90s they've been sending Western trash to 3rd world dictators. Also since the 1980s all of the worst polluting factories were moved to the 3rd world. We still use all of those dangerous cancer causing products they just aren't made in america. Like neoprene wet suits. There are no neoprene factories in america the last one was in the corrupt state of louisiana in cancer ally.Now they are all in poor countries, but owned by rich countries. Its obvious that rich people are the polluters, they are profiting off the pollution, its just their ignorant children don't realize it because they live in nice places. Thank you for publicly being ignorant and not knowing how your trash is disposed.

@@knyghtryder3599 10 rivers carry 90% of the plastic into the ocean. Eight of them are in Asia and two in Africa. It's a by product of industrialization. The US did the same back in the 19th and 20th centuries. The US and Europe sell their waste to other countries for recycling and power production. Not just dump it in other countries.
