Behind The Scenes of Cinematography SERIES - • The Production of Film...
From the minds of the Netflix series dark, 1899 is a dark, twisted, and visually exciting series that pushed stagecraft technology to further heights.
Stagecraft was first used in the Star Wars Mandalorian series and was theorized by George Lucas in 2008. Using Unreal Engine to power backgrounds on massive specialized LED screens behind actors. But the 1899 creators added some new wrinkles to how they utilized it for this series and it could be the future of what we see going forward!

I don't understand how Netflix or any producer cancels a show literally after it was released. The worst of it is when there's good shows with two or three seasons and they never have closure and personally I will never bother to watch any of them because I don't want to get invested into a dead end with no ending.

It's not a criticism, but if you'd seen Dark, you'd have had a *lot* more faith that this is going somewhere and kept watching. I agree that it was perhaps a little too odd in early episodes to really drag in the viewer. Dark was one of the best shows ever made, with huge plot complexity which all resolved itself truly beautifully by the end of the show. It was like a perfectly-designed puzzle box, where the mysteries had actual answers, rather than being retrofitted badly like Lost etc. These writers deserve more faith than this, and I hope someone else picks up the show.

Loved getting to get an inside look at the virtual production, logistically makes total sense and allowed the creative writing to avoid massive adjustments to the story. It's amazing technology that allows for things that would be incredibly hard to do otherwise. That said, it still has limits which you can notice and they sometimes slightly detract once you do notice them. There's something unreal about the look (no pun intended), which works pretty well for 1899's plot, but there's still progress to be made for this to match a truly real set. One of the biggest benefits is that the background's light and colour can hit the subjects in the shots which blends them into the scene so much more convincingly than green screen.

I first saw Vanish 8T screens and was stunned by what could be done with the new LED technology. The thing about filming with bright sunshine is it doesn't happen that often, I have only had a prolonged time with it on the Pacific coast. Normally where I live in Scotland we hardly ever get prolonged bouts of sunshine as it is always diffused, film makers say it is the ideal condition to film in, but anywhere else ultra bright, high contrast sunlight is not the norm. Look at film from LA compared to film from NY and you immediately see the difference as LA is crisp and Ny is diffused.

Virtual production isn't what most people think. It's a huge amount of work and more times than not there are tons of fixes on the back end. Due to not being able to do reshoots with limited budgets and time. I know this because I have been called several times to step in and fix a lot of these things and it becomes more costly than just shooting on green / blue screen. When 3nd up rooting everything and making new cg for the BGs and addressing executives notes. There's a place for virtual production but it's not some game changing thing yet.

I think this technology is a huge step forward in the world of storytelling, but Im not sure how I feel about it. Filmmaking has always been more of a lifelike creation than actual life and that's kinda what separates life from artistic film but Il feel like this is taking away from the authenticity of the craft. Yes you can make budgets of films cheaper and new worlds more accessible, but soon enough the process will become so technological that it becomes mundane and loses the touch with the natural world.

This series was pretty much 'Ascension', another well done mind bender, but played out in reverse; instead of being on the ground and ending up in space, it was on the ground but ended up actually being in space the entire time. Unfortunately, it looks like this concept is a dead-end if it is not followed through with. For this type of series to be successful, all parties involved must be committed to the drastic changes in tone and story for the second season(and perhaps beyond) once the final twist is revealed; a rather large commitment, and even larger gamble. An even larger gamble because if the first season is bad, the entire thing is trash; a scary proposition for investors.

It's the lighting. Like in front of a greenscreen you need to light you subjects properly to blend them into the background. The technology is quite new and there wasn't much lighting knowledge in the industry about it at the time of filming 1899. Also keeping the backgrounds very shallow doesn't help here, probably because of a high pixel pitch. LED walls today can have a very small pitch so you can keep the backgrounds reasonably sharp.

Partly True! While they did something similar for Oblivion, it was ILM's stagecraft system that incorporates LED screens and software like the Unreal Engine. In Oblivion, however, they used a series of projectors to project footage they capture from RED Epic cameras to get that result. Similar idea but different as stagecraft also utilizes much more advanced tech that allows the screens to follow the cameras movement allowing for parallax effects.

I agree. That system was much simpler than the stagecraft. They didnt want to use blue screen for sky tower set because it was all glass and removing the blue reflection would have been a nightmare.

Looking at Boba Fett in comparison to Andor, you see the limitations. Of course LED caves are versatile and can be a cheap solution. But relying solely on them takes away scope and forces you to over-produce. It might be better than Greenscreen-galore and someone like Hitchcock would have loved it, but after talking to colleagues who worked with this tech, I lost any interest.

I think it will be a technique of it, but I think there needs to be some development first. I see a lot more potential in full virtual environments then in volume tech

I haven't seen the show, but how is there a Japanese geisha (played by a Chinese actress), but they only speak Chinese/Cantonese? aka China and Hong Kong. I guess I will have to watch to find out.

Dark was brilliant, had extreme attention to historical details in the sets and though it also was a somewhat fantasy series, it was true to its logic. 1899 is weird: Ghosts, Bermuda triangle, but the real problem is the mechanics of the world on the ship it seems inconsistent and defying logic. That is naturally explained in the conclusion, but while watching it, it just seems like a sloppy script.

I wouldn't call virtual production in Unreal Engine the future of filmmaking. It genuinely is the present. Almost all major studios worldwide have already implemented this technology, and the ones remaining are on their way to implement it. Streaming services now require virtual production to be a part of a studio in order for the studio to be taken into consideration for new projects.

I'm sorry to anyone who worked on the show or really enjoyed it but it looked CG and over all very uncanny. Right form the jump I thought, damn this is soaked in cg, greenscreen, and projection. I loved dark, but this one really didn't look good.

What really took me out of the immersion was this language thing. You could select which dub to watch 1899 in: all original spoken dialogue in various languages or a dub of your choice in just one single language. The kicker is they could not decide in what direction to take the character interactions. The characters understood each other in the one-language dub and were unable to communicate with each other in the multi language version. The difference was just in the audio you selected, but the video stayed the same of course. This did not work at all. Baffling to me why they did not stick with one scenario or the other. When people can't talk to one another the story should play out radically differently from a cast that is able to communicate. It might have been best to just ignore the language problem completely (like in Star Trek) and just go with it. The whole scenario is surreal after all and everybody speaking one language would even make sense after the big reveal at the end.
