I get a big garbage bag and put in the 2 wracks. I lay the garbage bag on the tub floor. I hold my breath, reach in, and spray Heavy Duty oven cleaner liberally, close and RUN to breath. LOL. Next day, I take them out and rinse them at my kitchen sink. No scrubbing, no messy tub. Heavy Duty oven cleaner is much more effective than the odour reduced one.

Those white kitchen bags leak....use the heavy duty black trash bags which work perfectly. Used ammonia method both on oven racks and my gas stove burners and they look like new....best method.

Ammonia worked so well. I actually wrapped paper towels around the rack and then poured the ammonia on the paper towels, all the surface were coated with ammonia!

Used the ammonia in bag and it seeped right out. Even using double bag however I had heard the fumes will clean it if you close the bag. That was true and after a rinse and scrub they look new. I’ve had for 7 years and never got them this clean using other methods.

I run my oven racks through the dishwasher (and if needed because of cooking pizza directly on the rack) I use Brillo or SOS pad in the sink. Some people use Ammonia ----- I won't use Ammonia because of cancer link, it is just too caustic and I won't have it in the house.

The ammonia fumes is what cleans it, so you should use a heavy duty black garbage bag and tie the bag closed to contain all the ammonia fumes. The undersized drawstring 13 gallon bag ins't going to contain the fumes.

Your racks hardly need a clean. Just spray on Selleys Oven Clean, top and bottom, and leave it for 30 mins to do the job while you make yourself a coffee. No scrubbing required. For an even faster clean, heat the rack in your oven for 4 minutes at no more than 90 degrees C, then spray on the foaming cleaner. Easy!

My main question - hasn't anyone noticed how hard it is to slide the racks after using the ammonia? We've used both ways and the racks are not as easy to use as they were before cleaning methods. And....I noticed a couple posts mentioned the finish of the racks after using ammonia....they lose their shine.

Yes BUT not without a detergent or solvent of some kind to soak the racks or at least to add to the powerwasher fluid. Power washing would be great final step to the two techniques she described.

If you let the racks sit for 2 or 3 days in the ammonia, no paper towels or scrubbing are needed-you only have to WIPE the stuff off!!

The trick with the bags is to envelope them in liquid ammonia AND ammonia vapor - you wouldn't get a high enough concentration of ammonia vapor in your bathroom without poisoning everyone in the house.

Baking soda and vinegar combination has never worked for me. I spray Easy Off Extra Strength and let it sit overnight. Wipe with damp cloth. Fantastic results!
