You know, R.C. always thought of himself as more of a teacher than a pastor. That is why he spent much of his time in theological academia, teaching at the college and seminary level, rather than becoming a pastor of a local church body (although in later years until his passing he was pastor at St. Andrews in Sanford Florida). But in my estimation this man was, perhaps unknowingly on his part, one of the best pastors of modern times when he was teaching. He had a way of communicating the gospel that was readily received by the listener on whatever level the listener stood.
@wk1810

According to Matthew Henry, these are the definitions of a teacher and of a pastor (Rom. 12:7): Pastors and teachers are the same office (Eph. 4:11), but the particular work is somewhat different. Teaching is the bare explaining and proving of gospel truths, without practical application, as in the expounding of scripture. Pastoring is to apply gospel truths and rules more closely to the case and condition of the people, and to press upon them that which is more practical. It seems to me that teachers are more like evangelists (giving the gospel message of salvation) and pastors are more like shepherds (feeding the flock to help it grow, and protecting the flock against false doctrine). And if I am right, our churches are in dire need of pastors!

Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis. Insanity is a legal term. He was someone who could translate the Bible in such rapid order, yet fall into despair (depression) for months. He was an example of a genius with mental health issues who was able to survive to old age rather than commit suicide in his youth. And while he lived he was able to be productive, indeed a revolutionary, his works changing the world.

Luther is a totally biblical type of character. The difference is that we have much more information about Luther's character and behaviour. Luther is biblical in his sinfulness. And also his opposition to God. But there is no evidence whatsoever that God used Luther for anything but purification of his church.
@mosesking2923

@@bridgefin Luther did not "purify" anything. He was an antisemite who called for the death of Jews and was likely possessed by a demon. Luther himself claimed to speak to the devil every night. Unfortunately, Luther has led millions of "Christians" into heresy.

@@mosesking2923 Luther did not but he was used by God to show the Church that it needed to reform. That came about after Luther's rebellion. As God uses satan to tempt the faithful to show them their need for repentance and right living, so God used Luther to point out that things were a mess and in need of reform. Had Luther actually been an instrument of reform WITHIN the church I am sure he would be a saint today. Instead he rebelled and I fear that he was condemned as a result.

@@bridgefin God is a deity of order, not chaos. Because of Luther's actions, there are over 300 communions of Protestantism which don't agree on even basic dogma. Even Luther himself called Swingli "a devil" because Swingli denied the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Ironically, Luther would condemn the vast majority of Protestants today. Now look at all the original protestant countries: England, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Scotland....all atheist countries. The reformation was a failure with Luther as its ring leader.
@bridgefin
@bridgefin 5 жыл бұрын
@@mosesking2923 No debate. But the Catholic Church did not wake up to the need for reform until Luther after which they couldn't avoid it. Then the real reform occurred. All that satan does is evil but God still uses him. Same with Luther.

@@GeorgePenton-np9rh Here the law of Moses has its place. It is no longer binding on us because it was given only to the people of Israel. To be sure, the Gentiles have certain laws in common with the Jews; This is written by nature into their hearts. This is why this entire text does not pertain to the Gentiles. I say this on account of the enthusiasts. For you see and hear how they read Moses, extol him, and bring up the way he ruled the people with commandments. They try to be clever, and think they know something more than is presented in the gospel; so they minimize faith, contrive something new, and boastfully claim that it comes from the Old Testament. They desire to govern people according to the letter of the law of Moses, as if no one had ever read it before. But we will not have this sort of thing. We would rather not preach again for the rest of our life than to let Moses return and to let Christ be torn out of our hearts. So, then, we will neither observe nor accept Moses. Moses is dead. His rule ended when Christ came. He is of no further service. We will regard Moses as a teacher, but we will not regard him as our lawgiver-unless he agrees with both the New Testament and the natural law. Therefore it is clear enough that Moses is the lawgiver of the Jews and not of the Gentiles. Luther's Works W 35:164-165 Christ… is entirely without sin and the Head of the righteous, who owes no debt to the Law at all and needs no instruction as to what He should do, who already does all things even more abundantly than the Law directs. Luhter’s Works 27.231 For Christ is innocent so far as His own Person is concerned; therefore He should not have been hanged from the tree. But because, according to the Law, every thief should have been hanged, therefore, according to the Law of Moses, Christ Himself should have been hanged; for He bore the person of a sinner and a thief-and not of one but of all sinners and thieves. For we are sinners and thieves, and therefore we are worthy of death and eternal damnation. But Christ took all our sins upon Himself, and for them He died on the cross. Therefore it was appropriate for Him to become a thief and, as Isaiah says (53:12), to be “numbered among the thieves.” And all the prophets saw this, that Christ was to become the greatest thief, murderer, adulterer, robber, desecrator, blasphemer, etc., there has ever been anywhere in the world. He is not acting in His own Person now. Now He is not the Son of God, born of the Virgin. But He is a sinner, who has and bears the sin of Paul, the former blasphemer, persecutor, and assaulter; of Peter, who denied Christ; of David, who was an adulterer and a murderer, and who caused the Gentiles to blaspheme the name of the Lord (Rom. 2:24). In short, He has and bears all the sins of all men in His body-not in the sense that He has committed them but in the sense that He took these sins, committed by us, upon His own body, in order to make satisfaction for them with His own blood. Martin Luther, On Galatians 3:13 (Luther’s Works 26:277)

I totally feel like Luther much of the time. Terribly afraid of God and fear is turning to hate. 6:27 I have no feeling of assurance. I cannot defend assurance from the text. But God knows how I desire it. More than anything else I desire to not live in fear or resentment of God, but rather to live in love of Him because of knowing I will not be judged by Him. That I will be spared. But yet I can find no consistent exegesis to verify this. And so because of the very book my life is built upon, my mind is wrent asunder and heart broken.

Luther ignored his vows of obedience and, hence, put himself above all other authorities. In this sense, his biggest sin is pride. Rather than trying to reform the Church from within, as many of the great saints have (think Teresa of Avila), he chose to step outside the Church to tear it down and, in so doing, he went up against the Holy Spirit, who was sent to guide the Church for all time. Not a great choice.

He was trying to reform the church from within, that was the whole point of the 95 thesis. The church wouldn't have it. Also, he put scripture (not himself) as the ultimate authority. And when you say he ignored his vows of obedience, obedience to what? Church tradition? Sorry, but scripture reigns supreme and is the only infallible source of revelation. The church and its traditions are subservient to it.

He made it all so clear that man is saved by God's grace alone and His righteouness made us right and in peace with God, nothing else could. What a joy to know and being convinced that a sinner like me could be made righteous in His righteousness, and though I am a sinner he died for my sins, His grace saved me though I do not merit His love and salvation. But He did it all, for sinners like me. For I can never merit His salvation, peace and righteousness on my own, my deeds nor works for Him. God in His own righteousness, holiness and grace alone, accepted me as I am, a sinner who put my trust and hope in His holiness and righteousness, and by His grace I am a free man, freed from the burden of sins and guilt. A free man in His righteousness and grace. What a liberating message this has been. Today at 23:05 the truth shared by this speaker through the power of the Holy Spirit, I am writing this conviction; that I am a free man, by God's grace alone through my acveptance of His Son, who died for me while I was still a sinner, He paid it all on the cross a thousands of years ago. Yet today, this message struck me with the reality, a liberating knowledge that I could be saved by faith in His Son, through His grace alone, and I am made right with God through His righteousness alone. I can't wait to share this wonderful liberating message with anybody who want to be free of guilt and sins. There is a way to be right and be at peace with God, and I have just seen it. Glory be to God alone. May He bless you and your ministry to reach the lostbsouls of the world. (Love and gratitude from Malaysia)

To fully understand Luther you have to realize that he wasn't just a religious reformer (had no intention of forming the Lutheran Church-he hated that term) but was also the Father of German Nationalism. He was a Patriot as well as a reformer. Whatever indulgences were theologically they along with church tithes and taxes were a financial burden to his country.

The Roman Catholic Church claims to have started in Matthew 16:18 when Christ supposedly appointed Peter as the first Pope. However, the honest and objective student of the Scriptures and history soon discovers that the foundation of the Roman church is none other than the pagan mystery religion of ancient Babylon. While enduring the early persecutions of the Roman government (65-300 A.D.), most of professing Christianity went through a gradual departure from New Testament doctrine concerning church government, worship and practice. Local churches ceased to be autonomous by giving way to the control of "bishops" ruling over hierarchies. The simple form of worship from the heart was replaced with the rituals and splendor of paganism. Ministers became "priests," and pagans became "Christians" by simply being sprinkled with water. This tolerance of an unregenerate membership only made things worse. SPRINKLED PAGANISM is about the best definition for Roman Catholicism. The Roman Emperor Constantine established himself as the head of the church around 313 A.D., which made this new "Christianity" the official religion of the Roman Empire. The first actual Pope in Rome was probably Leo I (440-461 A.D.), although some claim that Gregory I was the first (590-604 A.D.). This ungodly system eventually ushered in the darkest period of history known to man, properly known as the "Dark Ages" (500-1500 A.D.). Through popes, bishops, and priests, Satan ruled Europe, and Biblical Christianity became illegal. Throughout all of this, however, there remained individual groups of true Christians, such as the Waldensens and the Anabaptists who would not conform to the Roman system. The Papacy and Priesthood In the Bible there are no popes or priests to rule over the church. Jesus Christ is our High Priest (Heb. 3:1; 4:14-15; 5:5; 8:1; 9:11), and all true Christians make up a spiritual priesthood (I Pet. 2:5). Jesus Christ has sanctified all Christians who believe on Him (Heb. 10:10-11), so all priests today are unnecessary and unscriptural. Furthermore, the practice of calling a priest "father" is forbidden by Jesus Christ in Matthew 23:9. There is only ONE mediator between God and men (I Tim. 2:5). The Catholic church teaches that Peter was the first Pope and the earthly head of the church, but the Bible never says this once. In fact, it was Peter himself who spoke against "being lords over God's heritage" in I Peter 5:3. Popes do not marry, although Peter did (Mat. 8:14; I Cor. 9:5). The Bible never speaks of Peter being in Rome, and it was Paul, not Peter, who wrote the epistle to the Romans. In the New Testament, Paul wrote 100 chapters with 2,325 verses, while Peter wrote only 8 chapters with 166 verses. In Peter's first epistle he stated that he was simply "an apostle of Jesus Christ," not a Pope (I Pet. 1:1). The Roman papacy and priesthood is just a huge fraud to keep members in bondage to a corrupt pagan church. The Worship of Mary Roman Catholics believe that Mary, the mother of Jesus, remained a virgin after the birth of Jesus and was sinless all of her life. She is worshiped in the Catholic church as the "Mother of God" and the "Queen of Heaven." St. Bernard stated that she was crowned "Queen of Heaven" by God the Father, and that she currently sits upon a throne in Heaven making intercession for Christians. The Bible teaches otherwise. In the Bible, Mary was a sinner just like the rest of us. She said herself that she needed a "Saviour" (Lk. 1:47), and she even had to offer a sacrifice for her sins in Luke 2:24. Jesus was only her "firstborn" son, according to Matthew 1:25, because she later had other children as well (Mt. 13:55; Gal. 1:19; Psa. 69:8). There's only ONE mediator between God and men, and it isn't Mary (I Tim. 2:5). The last time we hear from Mary in the Bible she is praying WITH the disciples, not being prayed to BY the disciples (Acts 1:14). The Bible never exalts Mary above anyone else. Neither should we. Purgatory The Catholic Church teaches that a Christian's soul must burn in purgatory after death until all of their sins have been purged. To speed up the purging process, money may be paid to a priest so he can pray and have special masses for an earlier release. This heresy began creeping into the Roman Church during the reign of Pope Gregory around the end of the sixth century, and it has no scriptural support. In fact, Jesus warned us about this pagan practice in Matthew 23:14 when He spoke of those who devoured widows houses and made long prayers for a pretence. Psalm 49:6-7 tells us that a person couldn't redeem a loved one, even if such a place did exist: "They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:" Peter addresses this issue in Acts 8:20 when he says, "Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money." God's word is clearly against the doctrine of purgatory. The Mass By perverting the Christian practice of the Lord's Supper (Mat. 26:26-28; I Cor. 11:23-27), the Catholic Church has created the Mass, which they believe to be a continual sacrifice of Jesus Christ: "Christ...commanded that his bloody sacrifice on the Cross should be daily renewed by an unbloody sacrifice of his body and blood in the Mass under the simple elements of bread and wine." (The Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. 10, Pg. 13, Article: "Mass, Sacrifice of") Jesus never made such a command. If you'll check the above references in Matthew 26 and I Corinthians 11, you'll see for yourself that the Lord's Supper is a MEMORIAL and a SHOWING of Christ's death until He comes again. It is not a sacrifice. The Catholic Encyclopedia states the following: "In the celebration of the Holy Mass, the bread and wine are changed into the body and blood of Christ. It is called transubstantiation, for in the Sacrament of the Eucharist the substance of bread and wine do not remain, but the entire substance of bread is changed into the body of Christ, and the entire substance of wine is changed into his blood, the species or outward semblence of bread and wine alone remaining." (Vol. 4, pg. 277, Article: "Consecration") The Catholic Church teaches that the "Holy Mass" is a LITERAL EATING AND DRINKING OF THE LITERAL FLESH AND BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST. The priest supposedly has the power to change the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. Now, what does God's word say about such practices? If you'll read Genesis 9:4, Leviticus 17:11-12, and Acts 15:29, you will find that God absolutely FORBIDS the drinking of blood all through the Bible. Rome teaches that the Mass is a continual "sacrifice" of Jesus Christ, but God's word states that Jesus made the FINAL sacrifice on Calvary! This is made perfectly clear in Hebrews 10:10-12: "By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God." The mass is unnecessary and unscriptural. Image Worship The Catholic religion is filled with all sorts of symbols, images, and relics. The Catechism of the Council of Trent states these words: "It is lawful to have images in the Church, and to give honor and worship unto them..." It's lawful to honor and worship images? Not according to God's word. Exodus 20:4-5 says, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me." Image worship is unscriptural and will end with the eternal damnation of those who practice it (Rev. 14:11). Salvation by Works Through infant baptism, keeping sacraments, church membership, going to mass, praying to Mary, and confession (just to mention a few), the Catholic church has developed a system of salvation through WORKS. God's word says that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not through works: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Eph. 2:8-9) "But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." (Romans 4:5) Jesus Christ came into this world to lay down His sinless life for YOU--to pay for your sins, because you couldn't. Jesus is your only hope for salvation. Only by receiving Him as your Saviour can you enter the gates of Heaven. There is no other way. "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me." (John 14:6)

Wrong, all the way down the line. The Church Jesus founded (the Catholic Church) had priests from the beginning----the King James version calls them "elders" but they are the same thing. In Matthew chapter 12 Jesus declares his twelve apostles priests by allowing them to gather grain on the Sabbath, something only priests were allowed to do. We do not worship Mary or the saints. We only venerate them. Yes, we pray to them but only so they can pray to God for us, just like you might ask a friend on earth to pray for you. Since we are talking about the early Church, the early Church distinguished between latria, the worship due God alone, dulia, the veneration given to the saints, and hyperdulia, the special veneration given Mary. If you continue to research the early Church you will come across these terms Purgatory exists to purge good but imperfect Christians of their mi or faults, failings, and attachments. See 2 Maccabees 12:43-46, Matthew 5:25-26, Luke 12:58-59, and 1 Corinthians 3:13-15. Thank God for Purgatory! Without out it only perfect people could go to Heaven (Revelation 21:27).

And why do you believe the Bible at all, J.T.? It was the Catholic Church that put the Bible together in the first place, at the Council of Rome in 382 a.d., and it is only by the teaching authority of the Catholic Church that we know that the Bible is the inspired word of God.

I am very skeptical of his Luther story. Luther was a monk, not a priest, and I'm not sure he even held or could hold mass as a Catholic. The other problem is Luther in his writings indeed believed in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Lord's supper, as do all true Lutherans today. Is Sproul making this up on the fly or did he just get all his Information from Hollywood?

Good point. It IS better communication to present your point, then expound, then wrap it up. In Communications, that’s known as “tell them what you’re going to tell them, then tell them, then tell them what you told them”. That way, people can follow where you’re going to lead them. You have to give them your main points- your thesis, your context first, just a short sentence or two or three, then lay out all the details, then summarize it. That way they get the most out of the message. Communications 101, Day 1.
