I’m gonna be totally honest here. I’m a HUGE Phoenix Wright fan, played every single game. This game was actually the first Professor Layton game I’ve ever played, it really got me into the series. I’ve been waiting for someone to make a video about it for years! It’s my favorite Phoenix Wright game AND my favorite Layton game all in one!

@jadefire6231 I was in the same boat as you, I mainly play professor layton games and don't have the largest interest in ace attorney, however recently I decided to play a friend's copy of ace attorney, on the condition that if I beat it, then they have to beat my first professor layton game in order to convince me to play the second ace attorney game, and so on!

My favourite part of the ending is that it's a combination of the first 3 professor layton endings. you have a dad creating a fake town to entertain his daughter after the death of her mother, you've got a whole town hallucinating to see the town in a different light and everyone in town believes thier in a different time period and it's purpose is to progress science.

A key point of the game is that Darklaw wasn't a villain - the villain was the Storyteller who, with the best of intentions, created a world which both Newton and Eve (the other two who knew what was going on) both found untenable - the one ending his own life rather than continuing to participate; the other subverting the Story to bring in someone who could unravel Labyrinthia's mysteries and reveal the real truth behind the stories. Eve was an antagonist, sure, but she was never the villain.

I don’t think there was a true villain in this story. Even the Storyteller had completely benevolent intentions. It was his judgement that was askew, not his morals. But he never put anyone in physical danger, and tried (albeit unsuccessfully) to end things happily. This whole thing just spiraled out of control, and it took the five protagonists to sort things out.

10:10 I think this probably depends on your perspective. As an Ace Attorney fan who went into this game with no knowledge of the Professor Layton series, I didn't think it felt out of place in the series (bonkers story aside). It felt like an Ace Attorney game, with the "Layton sections" feeling like investigation segments with added minigames in the form of puzzles. I imagine the Layton fans who hadn't played any Ace Attorney games yet had a similar experience, with the cross-examinations in the trials acting as a form of puzzle. I've also seen people subdivide the game into both its twelve chapters (following the Professor Layton standard) and its four cases (following the Ace Attorney convention). Personally, I think this game does a great job of blending the two series together in a way that doesn't alienate fans of either series.
@aidanthegamer5Ай бұрын
I actually replayed this game fairly recently myself and I had forgotten that they straight up tell Phoenix Wright in-game that his appearance was due to circumstance (Darklaw says, verbatim, "Your arrival here was purely accidental."), and while I get this from a narrative standpoint due to Layton being from London and Wright being from Japanifornia and either side having to relocate for a crossover like this to be possible, it doesn't help when the game already feels like, as you say, "Professor Layton feat. Ace Attorney"-this also isn't helped by the fact that most of the gameplay, collectively speaking, is from Professor Layton, due to reusing not just the puzzles but also the navigation since navigating in Ace Attorney blows ass, leaving just the courtroom sequences. My favorite puzzle in the game is number 57, where they utilize both Phoenix Wright's signature "thinking outside the box" character trait and the speech bubbles from the courtroom and put it into a puzzle. It's a really unique way of crossing over the two franchises, and I really wish the game had leaned into that meshing of the two series a little bit more.
@intodewood0598Ай бұрын
You are SO RIGHT on the "Layton ft. Ace Attorney" thing. When I played it, I couldn't help but think they were really gassing up Layton while passing on Phoenix.
@EmmyLaytonАй бұрын
What's nice to me, though i am biased to one side (i think you can tell which one it is 😂), is that the cases felt soooo involved in the courtroom with the multiple witness watching and how you have to piece together what's actually happened. Plus, it's so fun to see the character writing come out and especially the soundtrack. That soundtrack is like in my top 5 of all time. But i can definitely understand, the rest of the game being a bit devoid of Ace Attorney inspired moments feels a bit skewed toward the good professor
@magnusprime962Ай бұрын
It’s true that Phoenix and Maya weren’t intended by Darklaw to be there, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t important to the story. Layton would never have been able to figure out what they needed to if Phoenix hadn’t been there to protect the defendants and keep the kids safe. Things would have been much worse without Phoenix. He may not have been intended to be there by the plotters, but that made things better. He was the monkey wrench that got thrown in and stopped the machine.
@aidanthegamer5Ай бұрын
@@magnusprime962 for sure. I definitely won't say that this game would've been better without Nick and Maya, but I do still think that the game could have stood to put both sides on more equal footing.

I love the ridiculous grand unveiling of how everything works, the madman logic felt right in line with the rest of Layton. What I didn't care for as much was the fact this town's tragic history didn't really matter. The game was hitting on some very heavy themes with Kira, Jean, Espella, and the persecution of the witches, their unfair plight. There was a rebellious spirit there I was really getting into before the Storyteller robbed all that of its weight and it became the misguided folly of some old guy with waaaaay too much money. The family drama at the end was fine I guess but just didn't hit as hard as the rest.
@tobyonatabe2601Ай бұрын
Yeah, it all feels like they settled for a ridiculous (kinda fun) but bad Layton ending, instead of just letting shu takumi cook. If they really wanted to make a game deserving of the ace attorney title: They would've made barnham relevant. Every single prosecutor in ace attorney is at least present in the final case of their game. They would've found a way to write an actual culprit into the final case, because children accidentally slaughtering a town are victims, not culprits. The biggest villains of the game were bad parenting, sci-fi water and a silver bell, I think we can all agree that inanimate objects don't count. Phoenix would've been portrayed as more capable than Layton in court, because in this game he feels like AA1 phoenix while Layton feels like AA3 phoenix with a British accent. They would've let Maya use her powers and detect that none of the victims were really dead, instead of only finding out after being 'burnt' herself. Like c'mon, they even let Luke talk to animals, supernatural abilities were not off the table. They would'nt have relied on the 'pursuit' mechanic as much, the video mentions they the mechanic returns in GAA, but in GAA it's only used for specific character interactions and not 'after you pressed this statement you can progress the plot, this testimony was completely meaningless.' which is how the crossover uses it. I personally can't just look past all their blatant ignoring of the ace attorney source material just to write Phoenix and Maya into a Layton game. Ps: I don't mean any disrespect, I understand that the game can be enjoyed despite these shortcomings
@andrew_rayАй бұрын
32:30 Yeah, I like this game, and even I cannot fathom why on earth they would introduce an incurable terminal illness and then reveal the cure in the span of a minute in the last scene of the game.
@xuanfeАй бұрын
one solution I can think of for the machine problems is that they’re hypnotised to ignore pure black, not that they can’t see it, because you can’t really be hypnotised to become unable to see something. Their minds could sub-consciously plot a way around the machine to avoid bumping into it, and then discard any mental note of it. The machines are quite thin, so maybe people can see the majority of a thing behind something that’s pure black, and because they aren’t allowed to notice it, their mind makes up the rest of the image in place of it. If I saw someone wearing a black robe walking into my tower just after it rained, but my mind had to ignore black, I would still be left with the knowledge that someone is leaving footprints in my tower, and I would just see what I remember the walls of my tower look like.
@AE86FTSАй бұрын
I really hope this game gets ported. Thankfully the fact that characters from this game appear in AA's 20th anniversary artwork shows that Capcom does consider this to be a "real" Ace Attorney game. I mean it makes sense especially with how much TGAA builds off the crossover.
@yoshikatsu_kiraАй бұрын
What I really love about this game is that it's the sole reason why the ideas from Apollo Justice don't really carry on to the future Ace Attorney games. Since Takumi and his team were so busy with Layton vs. Wright and Capcom really wanted a new AA game, they decided to give the B team (Investigations) full creative control of the series, and they proceeded to drive off-road for the next two games. Takumi and his team, having become the B team afterwards, were relegated to the Great Ace Attorney, where ideas from AJ:AA and PLvPW *do* carry on.
@a-s-greigАй бұрын
Klavier Gavin's underdevelopment in the series? One possible explanation: 🎩
@StarLightShadowsАй бұрын
Honestly, Apollo Justice was a total narrative trainwreck that felt like the writers were constantly doing shit without even remotely thinking about the consequences or if it was a good idea beyond the initial shock value, so I am glad for this game indirectly forcing Takumi to step away from the mainline so things didn't get any more messed up. I firmly believe that an actual AJ 2 would've only made things worse, and instead we got Dual Destinies, which is easily one of the best mainline games in the series.

Love this game. Yeah it is more Layton featuring Phoenix Wright (as some put it), but that's also a good game idea. And, say what you will, this is the first and only game in either series that makes fricking Vantablack a plot point. (30:20 I imagine this working like the people see the black things and subconsciously avoid bumping into them, but the hypnosis prevents their brain from acknowledging it. So they cant see through, left brain just autocompletes vision like it does with our blind spots. All the magic in London was done after opening or holding the book. My bigger pet-plothole: Why was Kira casually bombing the marketplace?)
@claire-xh6rnАй бұрын
I think the reason Kira bombed the marketplace was so Phoenix would discover what was going on with the Shades. Without that incident, Phoenix would have never investigated the fire pit in the courtroom, which would mean he wouldn't have met up with Maya and Layton, and Espella wouldn't have been brought to the ancient ruins and had her memories re-awoken in that way. In addition, Phoenix would not have had the necessary information to solve all that stuff in The Final Witch Trial. Though Phoenix was not initially planned to be there, I would imagine she brought him into her plans at this point. It's been a while since I played this game fully so I could be wrong.
@TudsamfaАй бұрын
@@claire-xh6rn Yeahhh, no. I could believe it all being an overcomplicated plan when it comes to her "losing" the bell or not wearing the invisibility robe. But Kira also runs away for no reason and trips over her robe. This does point to her just being an incompetent shadow, which I then need to point out is a likelier explanation for everything. Imagine the instructions for this series of events. She isn't even wearing her glasses still (maybe shadows get contacts though?). And even then, bombing the market is a weird way to get attention from someone already searching for any and all clues.

Yeah… this is the one Ace Attorney game I’d be totally fine with being forgotten into the ether. I played it as an AA fan and curious about Layton and left pretty certain I wouldn’t ever enjoy a Layton game. If you go into the bonus features, the characters talk about how there was tension between Capcom and Level 5 and a lot of what made Ace Attorney special had to be scrapped. This makes sense since this game has quite possibly the most jump over the shark endings of any of the AA games. Coming from a series where spirit channeling and spirit mediums exist to this game where they will be like “Of course Magic isn’t real duh. It’s Mass hypnosis!” Just left me feeling…betrayed for a lack of a better word after one of the earlier cases went to great lengths to be like “Magic is real duh. Don’t be stupid.” If people liked this game, that’s good. But I just can’t.

Witches aren't that crazy for the Layton series either. There's legends of mythical creatures and ancient civilizations that had futuristic technology. As well as current day stories having crazy technology, like huge mechs and automatons. A village of people capable of magic or a damn close imitation of it through science/channelling doesn't sound too crazy. Layton games to require some suspension of disbelief to enjoy but that's honestly what I love about them. I wrack my brain over the puzzle and my reward is getting to watch a cool story unfold. But even though wild contraptions are usually involved in Layton's stories, they've never been treated as an afterthought in quite the way they are in the crossover. I've never been bothered about possible plot holes in either of PL or AA series except for this one, they never explain the witch in London because there's no way to explain it following the logic they established. I'm a big Ace Attorney fan filling in the gaps (still haven't played Spirit of Justice, that's the only one left now), but I didn't like Professor Layton. Rented Curious Village when this crossover was coming out, and I stopped not long in because I didn't think the scattered puzzle types with no core gameplay similarity didn't make for a fun game. That's why I appreciated the puzzles in this one being much simpler, because while I still didn't like it, I could get through it for the parts I was actually here for. Still, the setting and story elements inherited from Layton just didn't fit in the comparatively more grounded Ace Attorney, so I came out happy I finally played it and content to never play it again.

21:16 I mean, if you remember the first game, or the trilogy in general, Phoenix almost never does the cases on his own, he always has some sort of guide so of course Layton always acts as this guide up until the end

Whenever I hear someone talk about this game, it's always someone who was a Layton fan first, or played both of the series before. I've always wanted to hear someone's opinion of this game from someone who's only done Ace Attorney before

Okay then. I thought it was really cool and mysterious when I played it. It felt so out of pocket and unique as an AA game that I was really intrigued and engaged. I was at once psyched to hear voice acting out of Phoenix and Maya and at the same time dissociated for the voices not being the same ones from the fan crossover Turnabout Storm (for Phoenix anyway, Maya was only in that for like 5 minutes out of its total 7.5 hours). It did get me interested in Layton and I got the Miracle Mask soon after which I didn't finish because of this one puzzle about number arrays during a flashback segment. Luckily I remain Unspoiled on that game even to this day. I think I need to look up the movie Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva.

@@JaelinBezel The movie is just filler between the 5th and 6th games, iirc you can find it on youtube unless it was taken down. Also, the crossover Phoenix voice was in my opinion the best voice acted Phoenix

I view the game more as a Professor Layton game that stars Phoenix Wright. Both Layton and Maya are written out of the story part way through the game, Leaving Phoenix and Luke to pick up the pieces.

I stand by the statement that Layton vs Phoenix Wright is the best game in both series
