I think you don't really understand that not every breakdown must be over the top clownery. Acro's and Mimi's are wonderful BECAUSE they are tame and they suit their characters and the tragedy of their situations. Seeing Dee Vasquez scream and foam would break her character too. These are done masterfully and they work well because they are contrasted to real villain breakdowns. If every breakdown had the same energy, none of them would have impact Not being highly animated and extravagant doesn't make breakdowns bad or not impactful or unemotional. If anything, they hit harder

Considering the amount of quiet/emotional breakdowns in high places, I think he understands it well enough. The reason some of them are not higher is explained in the video, namely, many of the lower ranks don't feel different than a regular damaged sprite

My brother he ranked Gina and Franziska and Sebastian and Terry in S tier and they are an emotional breakdown and they aren’t not over the top.

yeah, I really like Acro’s breakdown. it not only shows that he’s been living with the tragedy of his brother for ages, but it also shows due to his nature that even if he suffered, he knows that he murdered someone, he knows he’s wrong. just a total moment of giving up since he can’t do anything else

Ted Tonate that low is a crime IMO. I think given the context of how he was so narcissistic about his bomb capabilities, and the irony having to resort to breaking the bomb with his head, and then the extra bit where it doesn’t even work at the end is perfect

Even more hilariously is the fact the bomb was still a fake in the end, so he did all that for essentially nothing. We knew early the bomb was a fake, so they could've ended the gag right as he fainted, but nah instead it still picked back up just to be like "yea it was a fake lmao". XD

A comment already mentions this, but a lot of breakdowns benefit from "less is more". Except for Enoch, he deserved a more over the top one.

I think Patricia's / Fifi's breakdown is good in retrospect, as it makes you feel bad for her at first, yet you eventually realise how evil of a person she is and start wondering how much of what she said was true, or if she just didn't want Dogen / Kanis to rat her out about the assassination plot

While I love the voice acting IDEA and some VA’s did genuinely good enough where I’d praise them, Will all due respect, Im just gonna come out and say this: Most of them fall flat or sound like children are (badly) voice acting, And also I need to say this, Aura’s voice acting (in the robot breakdown) seriously sounded like she was moaning like this was a very different video💀(I’m genuinely sorry there but I couldn’t keep that thought in), I get what the VA was GOING for but it didn’t sound right at all I will give some specific praise though and say the “WÄÄÄH” acting had me busting up though and I also personally really loved how unhinged the voice acting for Ted sounded

My problem with Courtney Sithe's breakdown is that it builds up and then "edges" you. The game knows that her confessing is not satisfying enough, so it gives you a second chance to actually break through her, which not only raises the stakes but also makes it more exciting to take her down. And then, her breakdown is just slamming the desk hard, something we've seen already a lot of times. It's just not satisfying and probably would've been much better if she didn't "confess" at all at the first place.

The video had a lot of effort put into it, but I disagree with the rankings themselves. Animations that are exaggerated or incredibly long tend to be placed really high, even when they look terrible, like Daryan's, Stronghart's or Atishon's, whereas longer animations that have more restraint and aren't as goofy, like Tonate's, or simpler animations like Mimi, Acro, Gant and any others end up rather low. Glad to see Kristoph high, though

I like strongharts breakdown a lot in concept, but I think it was severely limited by the animation feeling a bit stilted and the perspective/ fire effects weren’t as impactful as I think they could’ve been. I still would put it fairly high though

I think simplicity in a breakdown is very good where appropriate. Mimi and Acro's breakdowns are great, because they aren't the type of characters who would have some over the top reaction to being caught. It can certainly be mediocre, like with Redd White, but it is definitely not bad inherently.

I don't agree with numerous of these. I appreciate subtlety a LOT, the breakdown is a moment of eruption. It's an expression, and sometimes someone falling apart or sobbing has way more of an impact than the 300'th explosive freakout where someone goes "Daaaaamn! Yes I diiiiid it!". IMO, a breakdown should be a satisfying decisive moment where what was *hidden* and *pressured down on* by the case is finally unleashed. It proves the subject's guilt, regret, anger, disdain, despair, etc. and allows the truth to be revealed. It's why Athena's Mood Matrix fits well mentally with the series IMO, so much importance is about the psychology, feelings, and expression of the hidden feelings. Sometimes, a surprise is significantly better and more cathartic than a Luke Atmey-esq breakdown.

Simon is just great, poor guy couldn't do anything to save himself in the right way so he became the biggest villain ever and used everyone almost acomplishing everything, 10/10 character

I desagree so hard with this ranking ! I think half of the breakdowns you don't like are part of my favourite ones because they just fit SO WELL to the characters ... of course a rich 5 years old kid would react with a crying tantrum, we can not expect him to go crazy super sayan mode ... But I understand what you like in breakdowns and I respect your choices anyway 😁

True. I mean, I also hate Lance, but he's (technically) supposed to be unlikeable. His breakdown was supposed to be ranked more on how it fits his character etc rather than "no explosive mental breakdown!? F TIER!!"

Less is more definitely works for people that aren't the main villain of a game or have especially tragic reasons like Acro, but something over the top works for the ones who made such a well built plan only for it fall apart years later like Gant, Van Karma, and Stronghart.

Wanna bet that Enoch didn't have a breakdown since he didn't actually kill someone? People who didn't kill anyone, they dontget massive breakdowns. In fact, most of those were in F or D tiers. Enoch was pretty much got sidelined as soon as Sithe was on the stand too so it fits that his breakdown felt sidelined too. He barely says anything during her testimonies or dialogue in between too And then she barely got a breakdown herself too Sidelined so much so that I didn't even think that was his breakdown since the animation where his arms fly up is similar to his damage animation. Though I bet the idea for him was that since his animations have so many moving parts that once Ryonusuke pointed out that he almost ruined another young scientist's life like how his career as a scientist was ruined, it was likely meant to show his remorse for that rather than his plan to kill Asman. He was pretty aloof and cynical about the whole thing (even calling Harebrayne a fraud too) until that was brought up. Maybe itvwas meant to show his more hunan side ratger than his "robotic" side. Not trying to justify it since he was massively sidelined the second Sithe hit the stand, but it makes sense

I do feel the Auchi one seems simple and almost bland at first glance, but if you know Japanese Culture then the significance of what Kazuma did is probably the more shocking part. In Japan a man's topknot is a huge deal, and it should only cut when that man has been disgraced or dishonorable, so Kazuma cutting Auchi's topknot for him is a huge wound to his own pride and the pride of his clan. (TLDR: Auchi Breakdown is less focused on exaggerated expressions and more on letting the cultural significance take presidence)

Frankly i wish the ranking felt more fair. I think what really makes an f tier breakdown is either the lack of character cohesion, underpeforming outcome and or a lack of satisfying results. I think Enoch is a fair placement because he was a major player in the case, was very adversial and his character in both personality and animations are fun which is why i think his breakdown is a failure as its just unsatisfying from a player AND narrative standpoint. Meanwhile a character like Acro who is much more reserved in his presentation and tradgedy has a more quiet breakdown as its not supposed to be a "HELL YEAH WE GOT HIM!" moment. I dont even necessarily mind if Acro is still low tier overall, just that i think F tiers should be complete failing in any types of satisfaction beyond just "they didnt do a bunch of crazy animations". Its also following this logic why i wouldnt be as strict with "minor breakdowns" where people who werent major players in the crime or case dont have huge breakdowns. Of course its your ranking and all so im not going to force you to follow my idea, but just wanted to share my perspective.

Another thing I want to add is that rankings just seem... inconsistent. Like some of them feel like they're entirely ranked by animations, others by context (Like Dee Vasquez having a weak one by your own admission but ranking it higher than the F tiers because of what follows AFTER it, and yet others don't get the luxury of being ranked with their context either before or after like with Ted Tonate, who is seemingly judged purely by spectacle.

I do want to clarify, a lot of these criticisms apply to the earlier tiers (though there are some cases in the later tiers too.) but I do think you did a good job of explaining most of the ones you liked even if I disagree with some.

Imo the Best ones were the ones without voice lines For example the ones from the original trilogy for the ds. With the focus being on the Words "voice lines" in other words things like music or Sound effects are ok.

Great idea for a video I clicked on it instantly but honestly after so many terrible takes on the lower tiers I gave up. Also not to be mean bc the people doing the voices are obviously not pros but some of these were really hard to sit through.

You're entitled to your opinion on Eustace Winner as a name, but idk i don't think the pettiness of refusing to call him that was necessary. At the end of the day, it's his canon name now, better to learn to get used to it since, in a couple years, that's what most of the fandom will be referring to him as. And tbh, after seeing the official translation in action, its really not THAT bad, they get some great bits out of it.

Nice job with the video but I really disagree with a lot of these rankings! Not every breakdown has to be an over the top over animated crazy scene, I think a lot of the shorter and emotional ones work well for what they are in the context of the characters arc

I agree, the ranking undersold the context of Teds arrogance for dismantling things, only to resort to such a simple brutish method to desperately stop a bomb he KNOWS is fake only to fail anyways is hilarious. Also the moment didn't actually reuse a lot of sprites past a small small portion at the beginning which is weird to me that it was point for keeping it semi low.
