Reiner experiences dissociation not due to brainwashing or traumatic upbringing but because of the immense unbearable guilt of being responsible for the deaths of thousands upon thousands of innocent people including some of his comrades(Marco) whom he grew to care for. Also he was emotionally the weakest and most unbalanced among the marley child warriors.

Reiner is the kind who lies to himself, and by gradually believing his lie he starts turning it into reality because it becomes anchored in his subconscious as a true fact/event. That's the most dangerous type of liars, deceiving themselves so as to deceive people in a genuine way :p You can share with us facts about psychology and the secrets of the complex human mind, I think the movie split can be a great topic too !

I don't think Reiner really suffers from a disorder. He was just highly stressed and still in a state of shock in the conversation with Eren and Ymir. He temporarily forgot where he was and needed to calm himself down, by thinking about what he enjoyed. Being a soldier in the survey corps. Then Bertholdt reminds him of their mission and Reiner realises that there's no turning back. The time he revealed their identities, he had already suspected that they were found out. That's why he suddenly told Eren the truth, hoping that they could solve things peacefully. Reiner still hasn't come to terms with all the deaths he's resposible for, so he just hoped for the best. But of course Eren wasn't just gonna go along with them. He never forgets his place again after that. After distancing himself from the survey corps, he's left his past with them behind. He's decided to live with the guilt. After the timeskip, it has been breaking him down more and more. To the point he just wants it to end. But he's still motivated by Falco and Gabi. He wants to protect them from going through the same fate. It's also quite telling how Reiners mother continue to push her own dreams onto his shoulders from when he was a kid. He wants to do anything to make her and his dad proud. When he meets his dad, his mom's dream to become a family which now had become Reiners dream. Was crushed when his dad rejected him and called him a cursed demon child. Marcel had always been Reiners role model, becouse he was the one to support their group and look after them. After Marcel died, Reiner no longer had anyone to look up to. He decided to become like Marcel and imitate his behavior. Also due to guilt, since Marcel died trying to protect Reiner. He wanted to be a role model who could inspire people, a hero. He thought they were saving people, when in reality they were the couse of thousands of deaths. It's no wonder that Reiner sometimes forgets things, becouse he's been manipulated all his life. It's first when he meets Eren again, that he can confess and share his sins. He can't even get support from his own mother, who refuses to listen. Reiner is one of the most tragic characters i've ever seen. He's right there with Guts from Berserk.

That was such an excellent breakdown of Reiner only thing I would like to add is that from you explained he does suffer from dissociation he goes from soilder (following orders being big brother) to warrior his true self. This is all triggered by the horrible acts he has commited I dont think he had any dissociation when he was young but the guilt of Marcel's death and confession that he wasnt qualified to be in the group drove him more and more to replace Marcel in his mind then learning about the deaths afterwards when he was among the people just triggered him into vrwat7ng this big brother persona watching it back seeing the looks that Berthold and Annie gave him when he was being over friendly was really telling. He is the saddest character in this anime for me as well
@00svibes243 жыл бұрын
Reiner suffers from disassociation because once Marcel dies, he starts telling himself and others that he’ll replace Marcel even though he knows that he’s no more than Marcel’s shadow. The difference between the two is that Marcel could do all of the things Reiner did without losing himself in the process, whereas once Reiner forces Annie to kill Marco, he immediately reverts back to Marcel’s personality and regrets the decision, killing the titan that killed Marco. Reiner has many moments in which he simply doesn't remember who he actually is and what his task entails. Like when Bertholdt mentioned to Connie that Reiner was more of a “warrior,” a term that should be engrained in Reiner’s mind from his childhood, yet he doesn't understand what Bertholdt means by that in the slightest because he’s stuck in “Marcel mode.” Or when he tried fighting Zeke to save Annie, knowing that he doesn't have the fighting capabilities to match his war chief, he still chose to do it because it’s what Marcel would've done in his shoes, and up until that point he continuously lies to himself by thinking he’s on Marcel’s level. These are just examples of Reiner transitioning out of his real mind and instead basing his actions and speech on what Marcel would've done.

Reiner's symptoms fall more in line with OSDD-2: 2. Identity disturbance due to prolonged and intense coercive persuasion: Individuals who have been subjected to intense coercive persuasion (e.g., brainwashing, thought reform, indoctrination while captive, torture, long-term political imprisonment, recruitment by sects/cults or by terror organizations) may present with prolonged changes in, or conscious questioning of, their identity. OSDD-2 does not involve dissociated parts but instead describes a change in or questioning of one’s identity due to outside coercion. There will be neither sufficiently differentiated parts nor amnesia, just a change in how one perceives themselves. The brief laps in memory, but then quick recovery, he experiences could lend itself to OSDD-1b as well.

Everywhere I researched I never found a trace of this specific number and it was stated nowhere in my research papers. In fact the opposite was stated: that DID *can* manifest at every given age under special circumstances and is developed in your early childhood, ranging from 3 years to 7 years, give or take a few years. Could you give me your source?

I myself like to view the difference between the soldier and warrior Reiners being not their personality changing but the way they perceive the world, so for example the soldier and warrior would behave the same in certain situations and think about the same things but the way they view the situation itself is different which is where the "split" in personality occurs. But now that I think about it it's a bit hard for me to explain it well so I hope you all understand my view point.

im not sure exactly what level of trauma one has to go through to develop d.i.d, but I do study phsycology as a hobby (only as a hobby though, I'm by no means a professional. i always try to make sure my sources are accurate but my research does come off the internet so if you've gotten formal education and see something wrong with what I say, please correct me). spoilers ahead. but eldians have been shown to be treated very horribly my the marlayans, not to mention many of them become child soldiers. i think there could be a possibility that reiner developed the disorder from torture from the marlayans, being a child soldier, or both. also, I find in a lot of media that is not specifically about d.i.d but have characters with d.i.d often bend the disorder and tweek it for narrative purposes. for example, diavolo and doppio from jojo's bizarre adventure. it is *heavily* implied by the story that these two suffer from the disorder, but it's tweeked so that their body physically undergoes a change when one of them switches to the other. there's more examples of inaccuracy in those two but people with d.i.d obviously don't physically change when switchin between alter(s) and host. many things from d.i.d match up with reiner, and when he developed it could have still been within an accurate age range, so yea

Ik this video is over 3 years old but it's spreading misinformation about dissociative disorders and I wanted to debunk some of the things I noticed since there is already so much stigma around DID and OSDD. DISCLAIMER: I am *NOT* a professional but I have done a fair amount of research through several trusted sources. I am in no way trying to hate on this video or hurt the creator at all. I'm just trying to clear things up. PLEASE TAKE WHAT I SAY WITH A GRAIN OF SALT First of all, a dissociative disorder isn't always caused by something such as t**ture or s*xual ab*se. It's about how the mind reacts to the trauma, not necessarily the trauma itself. It can be caused by things such as n*glect or repeated emotional scarring too. As long as repeated trauma happened before the ages of 7-9 years old (when a personality fully integrates) a child can still develop a dissociative disorder. It doesn't matter what type of trauma it is. DID isn't a personality disorder, it is a dissociative disorder. The correct term to use instead of "personalities" is "alters" because they are alternate states of identity. We don't know enough about Reiners childhood to know if he has a dissociative disorder or not but it seems likely in my opinion. Since dissociative disorders are so complex, you can't really say whether someone has one or not based off of the information about the character in this video and it's not like we can ask him about his symptoms because he's a fictional character. Even professionals often don't know how to recognize or treat dissociative disorders such as DID. Over 50% of people will have experienced dissociation at least once in their lifetime however only about 1-3% of the population actually have been diagnosed with a dissociative disorder.

Try reading about child soldiers and militia members.. Considering the age at which their training/indoctrination often starts, IMNVHO they serve as a better model than double agents alone. Additionally, the strict 5y age limit seems a bit dated, as well as unrealistic due to its rigidity. People's minds aren't identical; our sense of self, develops faster or slower, & sometimes incompletely. It can also be severely destabilized by trauma or other external influence. We aren't all just plopped out of a mold on our fifth birthday, IOW. Additionally, your definition of DID is also auite rigid. Some "alternate" personalities share information, & some share consciousness to a greater or lesser degree, even if it only extends to awareness of another "alternate's" existence. (Although, ironically enough as far as my own statements go, the Marleyan Warrior program starts at guess what age... Hope your eye heals up quickly. OW 😱)

The thing is, Reiner doesn't have DID. When in soldier or warrior mode he is still Reiner, not a completely different personality. In DID the other personalities are completely different from each other so this is clearly not the case for Reiner. He either has a form of dissociative disorder not otherwise specified or most likely dissociative amnesia which can be the result of trauma in teenagers or adults, not only children.
