I got banned from Lyft because I wouldn't take this woman's kids to school. I told her that an adult would have to accompany the children. She made a false report, and Lyft sided with her. I had a 4.8 rating with over 5000 trips. I didn't have a dash cam to prove my innocents. I immediately got one and continued driving for Uber for 3 more years.

In 6th grade I missed my bus to go home from school one day Learned about the existance of hitch-hiking from a book and wanted to try it Started walking down the highway with my thumb out, and a truck with no trailer stopped A fat man with a long beard stepped out and asked where my parents were, I told him they're at home he ended up letting me up front and showed me the truck while lecturing me on NEVER getting into a vehicle with strangers and NEVER trusting strangers Ended up taking me home, I basically forced him to follow the bus route so I could find my house. It's true he should have told the school he missed the bus. Hitchhiking is not safe these days. That truck driver most probably saved your life. Your dad was right to be angry, he was trying to instill upon you that you just don't accept a lift from anybody. Because, highly likely you will end up dead. That's why your dad got mad. The truck driver picked you up to save your life and get you home. There are weirdos out there, bad ones, who are driving around just looking for kids like yourself to coerce or trick you into their car. It's a dangerous world out there for a kid. Sometimes they pull up beside you and tell you your mom asked that you be picked up. He's never seen your mom. Or your dad. Run like f---- if that happens. It's happening all the time, there's a lot of it. Take care, be alert and stay safe. Don't get a lift with anybody, unless they are part of your family or somebody that your parents say it okay like....your friend's mom or something obviously cool. Don't take risks, don't chance it, you have more chance of danger than you have of getting home safe. Just go home, especially if you're on your own. That's it! There's nothing else - Go Home.

Before COVID I used to tutor a lot in person at kids’ homes. For over 10 years. I used to clarify with parents all the time that I never meet with students alone until I thought that I was just giving creepy vibes and obviously no sensible parent would ever do that so I stopped clarifying. A few months in I about 3 families left me alone with their daughters that were 14/15 and they had only known me for about a week. I had to remind them and one even said “oh sorry you just had safe energy” Parents have absolutely lost the plot, Uber teen is just meeting demand.

I've heard from multiple old folks that there used to be next to no stigma about hitchiking with random people, they'd let you hop in, tell you about the stories they've got, then drop you off where you needed to be. Nobody was concerned about getting kidnapped, and parents let their children just run around the neighborhood. Not sure what time range that was, but it's funny to see the transition over the decades.

​@@zankthegreat4291I was born in 1969 so, was a kid in the 70's, teen in the 80's. The popularity of hitchhiking took off in the 60's with the whole hippie thing. And it seemed to be relatively safe till about the mid 70's. Then more and more stories started coming out about people going missing, especially women so, throughout the rest of the decade the practice began to decrease. In the 80's some people would still do it, but it was pretty uncommon. I actually have a hitchhikeing story. In 1984 I was 15 and got agry at my parents for moving away from Indiana, where I had a boyfriend I was crazy about, back to our home state of California. So, about a month later, I took off from San Diego and hitchhiked all the way back. Rode in a handful of cars, but mostly with truckers. Everyone was pretty nice and helpful, some even giving me money because I left with less than $20. But the trucker I rode with the longest and farthest (Southern Oklahoma to north west Indiana), decided to attack me on the last day. He thought, why am I giving this girl something for nothing? He was a big guy and had jumped on top of me and had me pinned down. Physically, I couldn't do anything so, I tried to reason with him. Talked about people doing things strictly out of kindness and all. Thankfully, after a while, I was somehow able to talk him out of it, but was so traumatized by it, within days my mind began to block out nearly the entire trip. I didn't begin to remember until almost a yr later. That was 39 yrs ago and it's still easily the dumbest thing I've EVER done. As for kids playing outside unsupervised. True. Almost all kids would be out playing till the street lights came on. There weren't all the gadgets and games, cable tv and videos that keep kids sitting on their butts indoors like now. We played hard all day and used our imaginations ( seeing an overweight kid or teen was pretty rare). And it's not like we were out alone... all the kids in the neighborhood knew each other, were out at the same time and knew each others parents. Most of the parents knew each other as well so, they looked out for each others kids.. There were still a lot of stay at home moms in the 70's too so, it was like having 10 moms on your street who just lived in different houses. I think the 70's was the last decade that was still a pretty idealic time to be a kid. People rarely know their next door neighbors now, let alone everyone on their street.

Oh back in the day. The government actually endorsed hitchhiking. One reason was because military members had to get to their bases etc. So they could just put out a thumb and have some random person help them get there. I stopped picking up people because I was driving late about 2am and saw a lady (18-19) walking in the rain with just a t shirt and little shorts. No shoes etc. I stopped and asked do you need a ride? She hopped in and told me she was fighting with her BF etc and had to run out of the house. Then I saw it. She held up a “Friday the 13th knife” and said “glad I didn’t have to use this though”. I was SO happy to get her out of my truck!!! I didn’t want to be an accessory to her crime. Or be a victim of it. Last stranger I ever picked up. That was about 25 years ago now.

I personally wouldn't want the hassle, but I can sympathize with wanting to take every opportunity to make an extra buck in this economy. What would be concerning is someone exclusively driving for Uber Teen... That would be sus. I'm not speaking from an informed perspective, but I can't imagine most drivers would want to do this if they knew they had the choice to opt out. There are too many opportunities for something to go bad for the passengers and the drivers alike, not to mention the likelihood of the passenger just being a bad fare goes up exponentially. Uber should just scrap it altogether.

I agree with most of what you said, but honestly, the idea of "not leaving kids around strangers" only fully developed in the last decade or so. Growing up in the 80s no one would think to question a 13-year-old kid taking a cab across town or walking around shopping complexes alone or only with friends but now since awareness of kidnapping has become more prevalent people have started to think more cautiously. Either way, I agree it still is a bizarre time because this seems like a step backward. I think kids should have the freedom to explore but this is excessive and unnecessarily dangerous :/

I did get on a plane alone, but in that situation, you're surrounded by adults and would only have to scream to stop a kidnapping. An Uber ride is quite different for obvious reasons. Yeah. There was a teen who took his life because a girl lied, the boy jumped off the school roof and hours later the girl confessed. Another, 19YO was tricked by a teen girl and because of that, he ended up as an offender, she later said she lied. Then there was a church pastor, whom former ex members of the church hated (a family) so they got their 13YO to accuse the man for touching her, he was branded a pedo lost everything and took his life in his home. It was later revealed that the girl and the family set him up because not only churches are easy targets, but they outright hated the late pastor for kicking them out of the church. It is a cruel world out there.

My sister and I used to take Ubers home (at 14/15) before I got my license because we had no other way of getting home- the public bus system’s closest stop was 2 miles from home, mom always worked until 6:30pm at the earliest, and no one’s parents were willing to help us out. there needs to be a clear and distinct cutoff between a child and an adult for legal reasons. it’s not a perfect system but it’s a hell of a lot better than the islamic way of sending little girls, some as young as 9 years old, into marriages with grown ass men. everyone matures differently but by age 18, most will understand how to operate as an adult and know right from wrong as any other adult does.

You can definitely get a med card under the age of 18. Its about 50 times harder tho and that isnt an exaggeration. I had A Lot of issues as a kid, and long story short i was able to get my med card at 15. My school nurse even had some of my edibles and I had to go to her to "legally" take them at school. I stopped renewing it after the first year because I ended up not even getting the physical card and it would have costed around 500$ in appointments each time. I didn't stop using it for help though, but for minors getting approved by doctors is a VERYYY complicated process if you don't have something crazy like bad seizures or something along those lines.

The best/most reliable tool I've found is simple and juvenile but accurate - every day is opposite day. Down is up bad is good free is imprisoned, you get the point. If it's being pushed in your face as good it's probably terrible. If it's being demonized and hard to find it's probably the answer.

I drove for ride share service for 2.5 years. The stories I could tell, and the rides I probably shouldn't have taken people on. I had college kids hitting on all the time, and obviously politely refusing. I have found things in my car related to this story and had to dispose of them, and I drove in 'good' areas. The cities must have been crazy. (The most intoxicated person I ever drove home, and then helped to her apartment (With there friend) was a Barrister.). I always took this side gig job seriously, and always viewed myself as making sure people got home safely. I've even had to find emergency care for a lady that got a concussion prior to getting in the car, and passed out in my back seat. Thankfully I was quick enough to realize what might have been happening, and I got a thank you message a few weeks later. These streets are crazy. Very glad I don't do that anymore. The pay/conditions for drivers just got worse and worse.

Even before Uber added Uber teens, as a gen z child from a low-income single household, my parent would allow me to use apps like Uber and Lyft because their job would literally make them work everyday, even work multiple jobs just to make ends meet. (We still do) Of course, I was always really mature for my age (trauma yay) so my parent never really had that much of a problem with me using these apps because they knew I was responsible enough to have my cellular data on and always watch for suspicious people. It’s really sad and depressing to witness the corporate greed and exploitation of hard working people who are just trying to live an honest living for themselves and their family. I hope things change for the better.

As a (just turned) 15 year old, I am so glad that this was said. There are so many people who are super rude at a young age, but I was actually raised right. I was raised to be thankful for EVERYTHING, too, even something like an uber. I did Uber for extra cash on the weekend only in Kansas City and I was surprised at how many parents allowed their 12,13, 14, year old daughters to take a Uber at 11pm to the store or friends house by themselves. Public transit has other adults and people around. And taxis come with their own risks - I actually have a few friends who had unmentionable experiences with taxi drivers. But the difference is with Uber, a kid has 24/7 access to order a car to pick them up anywhere that will take them to anywhere they want and its already paid for by a credit card on their account. A lot different than calling a taxi on the street

I used to drive for Lyft/Uber and would occasionally get a solo passenger that was clearly under 18, we're talking as young as 7-10 year olds going to school in the morning because they missed the school bus. I refused to drive any of them, cancelled trips and reported these account. It boggled my mind how their parents would be ok with this. I always had my two-way dashcam on and saved the clips where I refused to drive them just in case they reported me. Never had an issue. I cannot understand how Uber thinks this is going to end well with this program, I've interacted with some of the fellow rideshare drivers while waiting at the airport lots and all I can say that unfortunately it's only a matter of time that something messed up happens to someone's kid. Also, the other side of this coin - there have been numerous false claims from underage passengers of inappropriate conduct by the driver just so the passenger can get a free ride. Good luck having to fight an allegation like that in court, especially if you don't have it on video.
