many of the old redline wheels spun even faster due to the use of delrin bearing and nylon coating and the cars rolled smoother due the original and later improved Z axle "suspension". The lesson? they don't make em' like the used to.

Interesting info about the colour changers. It's logical that they would protect the axles from going rusty early in the car's life. I used to operate a chrome plating line in a plating works. So I can inform anyone who's interested, that the nickel plating does actually fill in tiny imperfections in the surface of whatever metal it is applied to. So if the metal axle is really good to begin with, it should be excellent with the nickel plating. Chrome won't do the same thing because it faithfully follows the surface and just adds to it very accurately. Chrome is much harder and is used to protect the shiny nickel. If you have a chrome plated bumper on your classic car, or exhaust on your classic motorcycle, it will definitely be the nickel under the chrome that makes it shiny. I guess the reason Hot Wheels didn't use nickel and chrome is because it doubles the cost as it's two separate processes.

@MrNascarfan1 I'm not set up right now for speed testing. But the current Stingray is available in both the first and second generation FTE wheels so I want to get a handful of both for when I am able to do testing.
@racegrooves11 жыл бұрын
Nope, they don't make them like that anymore. The bent-axle suspension and the Delrin bushings are too expensive to do nowadays.

The FTE wheels spin a long time! I haven't raced a Ford GTX yet. I would expect it be above average because of it's weight and how the wheels are spread out. The other cars that you mentioned are pretty low to the ground and I would think that they would have issues rubbing on the track.

@georgeman21222 I have never used any substance to make cars go faster. Silicone powder and WD40 are materials that could possibly work but after awhile, I am told that stuff starts to gunk and pile up. WD40 will start to attract dirt and then you'll have crud.

im not very fond of the new wheels they kinda look funky noooot one of my favs!... thanx for informing abut the axles, it does get confusing for some but i figure it out on my own a while back seeing is how the wheel spins on the axle so its easy to figure for the axle being the main part of the fte , my question is is there anything else you can do to make the car go faster ? maybe wd40 or swaping the fte's on a heavier car ... worth a shot !

So...to improve a Hot Wheels car and still keep it looking stock, could you disassemble one and nickel plate the axles? I guess you’d have to nickel plate the wheels, too, no? Is there a way to pull off wheels and reinstall without breaking / damaging them? (Id like to upgrade a Batmobile)

@drunkvaderaz I posted on that topic. (markkaz) he raced them in the same lanes every time the first go round. I mentioned that he needs to switch up the lanes and he said that he got a similar result. But really, you need a long track to do testing, not a little 3 foot toy track =) I wouldn't state any opinions until I tested several models to be sure that it wasn't the Javelin itself that sucks LOL!

Even if a model has FTE wheels, it still needs to be a heavier car to make a difference. Just like you said that the FTE models couldn't beat your '70 Buick. If you put lipstick on a pig, does it make it beautiful? NO! It's still a pig! Just because Mattel puts FTE wheels on the models, it isn't going to make them that much faster.

Hot wheels biggest problem is that the axle shaft moves side to side and the wheel rubs the chassis, I have been running cars from the modern era and I take them apart and center the axle and I put a drop of super glue in the middle, huge difference in performance, redline cars never had such a problem
