What I love about him is that he is aware of the injury he may cause, and when the match is over he looks with love and compassion into his opponents eyes and studies their demeanor so he can comfort them.... he's not just in it for the win, he's showing them how to get better.

I was a long time blue belt. I developed a different perspective of BJJ about 18 months ago. First master the very basics, next use lower level ranks as resistance drilling. Pick one or two very specific things to train in each lower level roll. Try it, force yourself back into position do it again and again and again under low rank resistances. Think of techniques as algorithms. Create complicated algorithms/techniques by starting in a favorite submission then move from that submission to your favorite position. This is a reverse behavior chain. Figure out all the movements to get you from your favorite position to your favorite submission. Then forward chain that sequence. Finally I needed help with what I call brain lock. Which is the moment you get confused or get over loaded and have to pause. To solve this issue I learned how to solve a Rubik’s cube relatively quickly. Under a minute but over 30 secs. Before every class I prime my brain by solving my Rubik’s cube a few times. The last layer Rubik’s cube solves are pure visual recognition and muscle memory. This helps me with any brain lock that I may experience in rolling. My BJJ exploded doing this over the last 1.5 years. I’m 2 months in to my purple belt and brown belts are not really that difficult anymore. I definitely have some skills at that level. I get exceptionally good relativity quickly in any skill I focus on. I currently struggle with guard passing, which I just give my opponent the position they want and just reverse them to pass guard. It’s lazy but I’m old. And the new kids love leg stuff. Now I’m learning that for defensive reasons. I did catch a K-Guard knee bar on a (3) striped brown belt yesterday, but in his defense his right arm was injured.

I am proud of you. Exactly what you did, I did also around my purple belt. It has helped me since. I also put myself into bad position, see what your training partner does and learn from it. Good job on the K guard knee bar! Suprise move that works really well :), Transition it into a back side 50/50 heel hook ;)

@@MMABJJChamps We were working on 50/50 today. I’m like a white belt with leg stuff. I have been working on my leg entries and ankle locks over the last year. They are definitely much better but not my game yet. My son is 15 and super tall relative to me at 5’10”. He is currently a (2) striped white belt and this kid imitates my movements and game exceptionally well and has also developed this long leg stuff. He saw me do a K guard knee bar with some of the upper belts and hit it. He was like, “that’s cool” and started attacking and catching knee bars a session or two after seeing it. He caught a standing knee bar on one of our MMA guys the other day. It was cool.
