One of the most important things in archery is Consistency you train to be able to pull the string back to the same place every time This Device Would make it much easier to get that So you could train archers quicker This would definitely Changed history Joerg would have been burnt at the stake for the laser pointer though

Another thing I believe could change would be the consistency of the arrows. I may be wrong, I nothing about archery, but making a shaft for an arrow is pretty difficult if you want a nice arrow. So making it shorter would save in material (2 arrows for the price of 1) and make it easier because of a lower probability of a node or an irregularity in the wood.

@@fatball9084 Your points are good, however, for a longbow you get the ENERGY behind the arrow in large part because of the length of pull. Joerg got a flatter trajectory and better penetration when he used the longer arrows. The force behind the arrow (the string and spring of the bow arms) wasn't much greater than with the short arrows, but they were being pushed for just a fraction of a second longer. It's a trade off between a lot of good arrows that may not penetrate or even hit -vs- fewer arrows that are more likely to hit and penetrate.

@Ethan Ansell It also destroys accuracy when you don't nock the arrow the same way every time. When you release the arrow it changes the pressure on the end of the arrow depending how the vanes hit the bow body. With a warbow in a large group of archers shooting hundreds of arrows, it didn't matter which way the fletchings were. They just wanted as many arrows in the air as they could, but for accuracy, consistency matters.

@@sud6646 It's conceivable that with the skills, materials and technologies available during medieval times, you could manufacture these magazines *if* a da Vinci-esque person had invented a similar design. They had halfway decent metallurgy to make springs and pins and the plywood parts could be carved from the hardwoods that naturally grew in the area. Basic woodworking combined with blacksmithing. Actually, the bow itself is a spring, so maybe it could be produced with no metal parts. The laser aiming device, not so much lol, but a skilled archer of that time wouldn't need one since they shot by instinct. *If* someone were to design and manufacture this device during the time of the longbow, it would have completely changed how warfare was conducted, just like when repeating cartridge firearms replaced single shot muzzle loaders. This is not to mention how the same magazine idea could be adapted to smaller bow designs which could more easily be used in close-quarter combat.

"you can see that there is a, lot of archer's paradox" That's probably because the stiffness of the arrow doesn't match the power of the bow right. And more importantly, the stiff veins are deflecting the back of the arrow off the bow and your hands, throwing off the fight of the arrow. Feathers collapse as they brush past, so they don't do that. Veins are only good for shooting through whisker biscuits. On a bow with a shelf or where you use your hand as a shelf, you need feathers to shoot straight.

@@caked3953 Maybe it would be too impractical in actual use and it would require a lot of extra manufacturing. Plus, if you use the arrows that would be shot from a warbow , suddenly that magazine is 4 times the size. They are really thick and heavy to withstand a 160lb bow without splintering instantly. And if you want to use crossbow bolts, it would make things even worse as those are even thicker (and generally have worse flight characteristics and worse penetration because of it).

Well technique could be better and arrow orientation as well (there's a reason those arrows early on with 3 vanes have one with a different colour) however for being totally inexperienced it's not a bad result. It has to be said though, I do think that a lot of basic concepts from slingshot shooting like getting a feel after trying a few shots probably transfer pretty well from slingshots to bows. This might be why only one or two hit the shed (don't remember the exact amount, just noticed his grouping improved with shot count).

This is probably never going to get read, but I'm a longbow archer and here's why this wouldn't have been used to medieval longbow archers; (1) In medieval war draw weights were higher and the arrrows were thicker to punch through armour. For reference, most target arrows have a diameter of pencil, medieval war arrows have a diameter nearer a man's thumb. This means your magazine holding those thin target arrows would need to be bigger too to take even six war arrows. This means then that the magazine then becomes an issue as it's going to be bigger and heavier than the one you've got there. Having something sticking out then affects balance and aiming. (2) The magazine holds six arrows. A medieval archer in a battle shoots dozens and dozens of arrows. He would usually stick them in the ground for easy access. A medieval archer would not see the benefit of having just six arrows and then having to reload the magazine when they can just pick each arrow up and shoot it normally. (3) You can't use the bow normally if the magazine is empty. In war you're not going to sacrifice using your bow if you've shot six arrows and the magazine is empty. You're going to take the magazine off and use it normally because that thing is now a hindrance not a benefit. (4) Wear and tear. You're putting extra strain on the lower limb of the bow drawing it because of the magazine. You're putting extra wear on string due to rubbing of the string on the slot. This reduces the life of the bow. I think most medieval archers would have thought of this magazine as unnecessary and a hindrance to shooting. It put wear on the bow and the bowstring, is not practical and renders the bow useless when the magazine is empty. If this is a history changer it would have been one where archers would have lost a lot more battles!

(1) This might be true but you forget that armor was expensive and usually only knights and nobles could afford a full set. The regular folks would have a shield and a helm if they were lucky. So, I can imagine a squad of archers with such a device to get as many arrows in the air as they could and let traditional archers target the armored guys. (2) They could have worked on a bow rotation system where the archer is handed a ready to shoot bow, empties it, pass it off to someone next to him who starts reloading it and gets a new ready to shoot bow. You know, like cannoneers work in teams? Same idea I guess. (3) See (2). (4) I have no idea how expensive it was to make bows back then but if something was sure to gain you victory in battle they usually did not mind spending the coin. All your points are valid but I figured I'd point out that if you really gained a benefit from this kind of setup one could find numerous ways to work around the problems.

5:48 you're right, it's 'tactical advantage'. Strategic advantage means in the grander scheme of things whereas tactical is in the instance of a battle.
@Temp0raryName
@Temp0raryName 5 жыл бұрын
Correct. Although in this instance I believe there are strategic elements which would benefit too. Should the enemy raid your supply lines, they will only be hampering your arrow resupply, they will not be able to make use of those themselves. Which is a strategic issue, as it is not limited to just the engagement where the theft is made. Likewise, whilst limiting it purely to the way Joerg described it, if you have repeated engagements with a group of enemy archers, possibly with different units on your own side, they will suffer a constant attrition of their arrows, yet be unable to make use of yours to replace them. Conversely though your army can still utilise captured enemy arrows, simply by removing the device from whatever proportion of longbowmen have run low on the shorter arrows. Equip them with the captured arrows, whilst redistributing any of their remaining short arrows to the rest of the archers.

@darknightoftroy There are a lot of folks who are convinced that civilisation will collapse. There are a number of scenarios which could realistically have that result. Plus history has shown us that all civilisations do collapse. Albeit that it would require a simultaneous loss of a high proportion of the planet's population for us to lose the use of the technology we have accumulated. But, as such is within the realms of possibility, it does not hurt to be aware of primitive technologies which could aid survival. And, of course, humans will doubtless resume their hobby of making war. This time using repeating crossbows.
@Temp0raryName
@Temp0raryName 5 жыл бұрын
@darknightoftroy Stone napping was discovered and lost multiple times in prehistory. Because the population levels were too low for the knowledge to be passed on effectively. You think that you could go from stone age to electric generation, but if every minute of your day is taken up with just staying alive, avoiding getting a lethal dose of radiation, and thereby learning to avoid population centres (with equally desperate survivors and an overdose of radiation), you may find it difficult to get an apprentice to pass all those skills on to. Having a decent crossbow may well help you to do that through. Especially if you have the skills and knowledge to maintain and repair it and make fresh ammunition.
