I’m so glad I happened to come across your version of this fly. I had the distinct pleasure of being a friend of Poul who lived down stream from our house in Livingston Manor. His home was in Roscoe, and on many occasions we had a chance to share a good laugh, a breakfast at a local eatery and, most importantly, outstanding times tying flies together and even wetting a line on the Willowemoc Creek. Mr. Jorgensen was certainly quite instrumental in the formative years of my fly tying education, as was Ralph Graves. Poul and Ralph really were giants in the art of fly tying. Ralph gave me his HMH bronze vise after sitting at his side for three full years as I learned his secrets and techniques.

Thanks Tim and the"viewer". That looks great, also could pass for a hellgy. I have some daiichi larva hooks I'll try.

I used a hook for nymph (it was not available for larvae), despite this, it was very effective. Thanks Tim, excellent fly.

I really enjoyed tying up 6 of these over the past weekend. What a quick, easy tie. I am going to try them this coming weekend on the Au Sable River here in MI.

How did you hold the lead wire against the hook? 'Looks like you used a special tool.

Plunger style hackle pliers. I use 'em for just about everything.

Does this have to be on a swimming nymph hook? They seem a bit difficult to source here in the UK.

No it doesn't. In fact, in "Poul Jorgensen's Book of Fly Tying: A Guide to Flies for All Game Fish" he tied it on a straight shanked Mustad #9672. I believe it was later that he started tying them on the swimming nymph hooks.

David R Bellairs Hi David, look at Ahrex curved shrimp hook. It looks shorter than the daiichi and not as curved but it may be easier to source in UK. Just thought I'd give you a suggestion.

David, Its easy enough to bend a couple of hooks if you need something special - I do it all the time. While a plain set of needle-nose pliers will do the job I have a set where I have ground the edge of the jaws to about a 2mm radius so that the bends are smoother with no kinks. Round-jawed pliers are available (check out jewelry makers suppliers) that work also work very well.

I have one of Paul’s book I bought while in Michigan and he also calls for a mustard #9672 3xL size 10 would/could this change the way the wire raps are applied?

in the books there is no wire in the list of materials but it seemed like a great addition

He also called the s@#t nymph in his book on a straight mustad 9672 nymph hook. It does look better on swimming nymph hook, though

This is way prettier than Poul's tie in the book. You aren't really getting just how awful this thing can be and land a ton of fish when everyone else is skunked. That is the insult. You show your fly to one of the losers you are outfishing, and they will probably say "that's a pretty tie".
