Chickens have a rather small brain, but how intelligent are they?
The brain of a chicken is on average about 2.67 grams, which is rather small compared to other animals and other birds. Nevertheless, chickens are smarter than you might think. Chicken live in a social groups with dominant and subordinate individuals. Often the subordinate males try to trick the dominant males in order to get together with females. This suggests the capacity to deceive, which requires working memory.
Indeed in a delayed match to sample task chickens were able to remember diffent colors and remember how often they had to give a response, show some clear executive functional skills. Also, besides basic emotons of fear and aggression, chickens also have more complex emotions. It has been shown that they show empathy towards their own chicks. As such, there is more going on in a chicken's brain than many give them credit for.
