I was born and raised on a dairy farm. My families farm was sold about 20 years ago and I would absolutely not recommend agriculture to any of my kids. The only exception would be if your family already has a running, profitable farm. Farming was an awesome way to grow up, but nowadays there is no such thing as a "start up" farm. Money is not everything and its not happiness, but trust me, you will not be happy if your dying broke like my grand father. I dont know how any small to mid size farm makes it in this country. New tractor half million, health insurance...... 30k per year..... etc..etc....

Those are some monster windrows! That rake is handling it very well. I don't like to use our V-Rake much, because it ropes the hay and makes baling difficult. The last field I was in I hit a slug of hay in a windrow which stalled my tractor. Those windrows were also enormous. I was very surprised that megawide pickup didn't clog up. It just happily kept stuffing hay into the bale chamber. Lol!

Hillsides and slopes... they can do some really funny stuff to machinery... I've heard guys in hill country that won't even pull a small round baler with less than a 150 horsepower tractor because when it gets a bale in it it will just push them all over the place, particularly in a turn or if the ground is the least bit slippery... there's a lot of iron in that rake and I wouldn't be surprised to hear it can push them around on a steep slope or slippery conditions (not just wet/muddy but sometimes just damp grass can be way slipperier)... Hearing you explain the gears I think I stick with our high, low, creep ranges and 1 to 6 and shuttle forward and reverse or the standard H pattern with reverse and just high and low.
@richardvandyke95785 жыл бұрын
Gears are really simple. 4 gear ranges A,B,C,D, and 4 powershift gears in each range. Most farm work is done in the C range.
@lukestrawwalker5 жыл бұрын
The gears are really simple when you understand how it works... basically you have four ranges (A, B, C, D) instead of two (hi/low) and then four gears (1,2 and 3,4) in a "Z" pattern. 1 and 2 are at the bottom of the "Z" and 3 and 4 are at the top of the "Z". You select your range (A is slowest D is fastest) usually somewhere in B or C for most jobs, with A and B for heavier tillage type jobs) and then select the gear... no different than shifting an H pattern four speed transmission with a high and low range... You shift into high or low range and shift into whatever gear you want; on my Ford 8 speeds it's typically high range and second gear (sixth) for working. Same thing on the Deere, but you have the added advantage that on the gears "across from each other" (1 and 2 at the bottom of the Z, and 3 and 4 at the top of the Z) you can shift from one to the other directly across from each other WITHOUT USING THE CLUTCH... they're a powershift gear thus can shift 'on the fly' without clutching. For a manual H pattern transmission you have to clutch between ALL gears. If you want to go from 2 to 3 up the center of the Z pattern, THEN you have to clutch because that's a manual gear selection not the powershift. If you want to switch ranges, you clutch like you would with a normal H pattern with 2 ranges... Nothing to it... Later! OL J R :)
@SlipShodBob5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, just trying to think if that was what was in the 3650 we borrowed when the cooling pump went on our Ford during baling but it was nearly 20 years ago and was rather banged up and about to be sold. All I can remember was the linkage was half seized, the linkage to the spools was sloppy to the point one kept popping apart, the gears were sloppy between 2 and 3 that it was hit and miss if it went into gear when changing between the two, 3 to 4 was the opposite but 1 and 2 were spot on. Oh and due to the size of the thing it was tight or impossible with some when it came to getting it in the sheds.

She's teaching school now and the schools are *VERY* funny about their staff's activities on social media, particularly Facebook and KZbin... It's sad but true *everybody else* in the world is allowed to "have a life" but if you do or say *anything* that the biggest prude or nutjob in the community happens to find "offensive" you can RAPIDLY find yourself out of a job and your career in serious jeopardy... Sad but it's the sickening state our society has come to. I wouldn't be surprised AT ALL if Jamie decided not to appear in any videos because of that issue alone. I know she also got pretty tired of bad comments about her doing farm work in flip-flops and of course you always have a few perverts that feel compelled to make lecherous statements to any attractive female and I'm pretty sure she didn't like that sort of thing either... It's just 'how it is' and while we'd all like to see Jamie more things will have to change for her situation or with attitudes of others before it would happen... Later! OL J R : )

@lukestrawwalker5 жыл бұрын
They don't want or need one on their hills... it'd just send bales rolling downhill on them and they don't want to have to pick them out of the fence they flattened out at the bottom or trees or buildings or anything else... backing up is simpler and gives better control of the bale. Not like they're baling 10,000 acres and every second wasted wrapping and dropping a bale adds up... Later! OL J R :)
@clintonreichert48225 жыл бұрын
luke strawwalker we bale hills all the time . If you know how to use it ur fine I can control the bales better with a kicker when ur on a side hill you turn sideways anyway . And you can always chain the kicker up so its not pushing bales..
@lukestrawwalker5 жыл бұрын
@@clintonreichert4822 "you can always chain the kicker up so it's not pushing bales"... SO WHY HAVE ONE?? I mean if the baler comes equipped with one, fine. But if not, WHY spend the money to put one on when it didn't come with one? Makes ZERO sense. Guys got along JUST FINE for decades with round balers without kickers... True they DO save a bit of time per bale on flatlands where you can drop a bale without backing up, which if you're baling 10,000 bales or whatever adds up over time and saves a LOT of time, effort, money, and wear on the tractor... but NONE of those situations apply to what they're doing here... baling a few hundred bales a year on hillsides... Later! OL J R : )
@clintonreichert48225 жыл бұрын
luke strawwalker ok man. It’s convenient store have one it makes things a little easier. But its up to them if that’s what they want sure they should buy one if not then that’s fine . I was just suggesting it so maybe they won’t have to back up all the time.
@lukestrawwalker5 жыл бұрын
@@clintonreichert4822 Who's to say maybe the baler had one one it when they bought it and they took it off... wouldn't be the first time I've heard of guys doing that! Some folks just don't like them, so they take them off. I agree they CAN be convenient in certain conditions. The biggest advantage for a kicker on a Deere baler is to prevent a bale from rolling forward as the door closes and potentially damaging the netwrap attachment on the back door as it closes. It all comes down to personal preference. I bale with an open station tractor, so as soon as I get the twine started on my old baler I back up across the wind or downwind so that I'm not eating dust the entire time it's wrapping... I also like to rearrange where I'm dropping the bales, clump them together if possible or align them for easier pickup... All depends on what you're doing. Later! OL J R :)
