I think Smiledog's biggest strength and what separates it from other early creepypastas is it's only gotten more relevant as we become more tech dependent. We've all gotten a scary chain letter at some point or read a comment that said to spread it or something bad might happen, so smiledog preys directly on that. With spam on certain sites only increasing, I see smiledog making a comeback in some way, be it a rewrite of the original or even people being reintroduced to the original legend

I think one of the best horrors of the story is how Mary was kind enough to not expose the narrator to Smile Dog and took her own life as a result of the horrors. But our narrator is so cold and selfish that they expose hundreds to the image just to save themselves.

Smile Dog was one of the few actually well written creepypastas right up there with ones like 1999. Also, the ending of the story brought the audience into the story and started an actual chain letter, which made it even more well made. The author nowadays is a professional author and I can tell he’s always had it in him.

Back in the day, I got some horror chain mail from friends, and it was horrifying. I actually got the Teddy one and ran down to my dad, who was getting in a late-night workout, in tears, to show him the message. He handled it very well.

I kind of like the whole "amateur writer" bit of the story, probably bc I got into writing a few years ago bc of creepypastas like these ones. Yea, smile dog isn't perfect, but what scary story is? 😅 The poetry and novellas I write aren't perfect either, but that's not stopping me! Very nicely done sir! 😊

Fun fact, the red demon-y image is actually the original, made by Michael Lutz himself! This is because Mary describes Smile Dog as not actually being a dog, it’s just the closest thing anyone can compare it to. KZbinr Midnight Krick interviewed Lutz about it. Nobody knows who made the Polaroid image, which adds some creepiness to it. I personally hate the latter, it freaks me out. I can look at the red image like ooh spooky, but I can’t look at the husky one for too long or there’s actually a decent chance I’ll have nightmares. And I never have nightmares! Also, Smile Dog is one of the main antagonists in a newer unfiction series called Chainmail Chasers. He’s legitimately frightening and pretty funny at the same time. Highly recommend.

Anyone here should definitely check out Midnight Krick's video about Smile Dog. He was able to speak with the original author and discover that the more demon-like image was in fact the first version, and the one with an actual husky was made by someone else. That second image doesn't seem to have any original source that anyone can track down, so we might not ever know who made it.

I have been wondering where smile dog came from for years and wondered who made it. Like one of my friends was scared of it and didn’t want to tell me about it and didn’t want me to read the story. I listened to someone read it and I didn’t understand why she was scared of it yeah the picture of the dog is kinda creepy. I always thought he was fake like the old chain letters in KZbin. In fact the red demon version of smile dog is actually photoshopped.
