I used to be one of those drivers who was angry that cyclists were taking up the road. I'd never do anything stupid like pass them too closely, but I definitely didn't understand. I recently had some spare cash in my health spending account at work, which covered an entry level fixed gear. I started riding on paths and in the streets and I totally get it now. I think everyone would benefit from trying out something they don't understand, you might surprise yourself. Now whenever I'm sitting in traffic behind some terrible driver, I can't help but think "I'd rather be on my bike". I don't ride brakeless, I don't run reds, but I realize there is a skill level and acceptance of risk associated with both of these things that I just don't have. Thanks for making these, Terry. Sure, you get a bunch of hateful comments on here, but there are plenty more who are watching these and getting inspired to go outside and try something new. Also, Cooper looks like he makes really good coffee.

It's strange '' oh cyclists taking up the road'' when cars literally gridlock each other up the whole time and have priority to all the space right down the middle of every street. It is indeed a matter of perspective though, quite a few generations were brought up with something of an expectation to learn to drive and run a car, but not really to have riding skills to go with the driving skills. Even made to attempt sports at school but like no ever much emphasis on riding in education. I agree with Cooper I don't think most people who start too young to rely on driving a car the whole time, there just not as '' good'' at reading the road. Just ''Lane, lights, speed limit and next vehicle in front '' mostly, with a bit of '' on your best behavior'' when your taking your test.
@terminalspines

@@leifcian4288 I think there's definitely a part of angry drivers that are pissed that they have to sit in bumper to bumper traffic in their expensive cars while someone on an old recycled road bike gets to the same place way quicker than they are. I think these people are just directing the anger they'd be feeling anyway at whoever happens to be nearby. Anyways, I'd much rather be sharing the road with someone hyper attentive like Cooper than most of the idiots who inexplicably manage to get drivers licences. Just this morning some completely oblivious driver sped right next to the sidewalk in a huge puddle as they were driving past me. Tons of room to avoid it, but they were just completely unaware of their surroundings. These are the same people who run someone over and drag them all the way home, then wonder why there's a mangled corpse in their driveway.
@leifcian4288

@@terminalspines Cutting the speed limit right down in the majority of urban places I think would be mostly better for everyone, I mean It's quite hard for most people to cycle over 20mph for long but get in a vehicle and all of a sudden it seems kind of slow. But then if traffic in busy areas is moving slower it should run a lot smoother and be a lot less stress. so in a lot of instances it wouldn't really impact on commute times too much anyway, and be more time to relax for a driver. But then signalling would need to be completely changed. Probably easier said than implemented tbh. Also other than just the speed limit there should, really, also be a acceleration limit relative to the next breaking point. If the limit is only 20, still going 0 to 20 in a split second is an abrupt force and noise when throwing thousands of pounds around. Then usually just have to break harder at the next junction which only causes more wear and tear on the components which will cost more time and or money all the sooner. And fuel costs. So yeah if only drivers where more generous with acceleration and deceleration distance it should be a lot easier for everyone if it can help with synchronisation. Unfortunately the wrong precedent with etiquette was set a very long time ago. It kind of looks relatively OK in New York from what I can see in the videos, perhaps because it's a bit easier to anticipate Flow with the long wide avenues.

Cooper Ray reminds me of my younger self. Not the riding skills (I wish), but the attitude that "I'm skilled enough not to hit you, so you don't have to worry. I'm not putting you in actual danger, so don't freak out." The problem is that other people can't read your mind. They can't be sure that you are not going to hit you, so they do have a moment of panic, which could go on to impact them and the people in their lives for the rest of the day. Since I've gained this perspective with age, I'd be curious to see if Cooper Ray's perspective changes in about 20 years and/or if he has children.

But, there is something else with Cooper, this guy is just more beautiful to watch than the others when he rides... he got so much flow, that you can almost forget he’s riding a bike in a street, he could be on a board on the ocean or on the snow... 8:36 I get filtering and running red lights (unless other road users have to hit the brakes and risk a collision because you come shooting through), I also try to ride fast and efficient, looking ahead. But if pedestrians on pedestrian crossings have to jump out of the way and be scared it's just unnecessary and wrong. Pedestrian crossings are for pedestrians to cross the road. They have the right of way and making a video doesn't give you any special rights. The other thing is holding on to cars. While you're holding on to a car, a swerve to avoid an obstacle or a sudden sharp turn can throw you off the bike. Just imagine the shit day the driver is going to have if you die because you were holding on to their door handle. Completely avoidable.
