3:50 the small turret was for close protection, the vehicle was designed originally with another turret mounted on the engine deck, which would have housed 2x 20mm MG 151s for anti aircraft work but the 2 vehicles built ended up never receiving them afaik (at least as of their participation in the 1951 bastille day parade), but information on the actual vehicles is rather scarce, as is usual for french cold war vehicles

The US refused to allow France to manufacture and export the AMX-50, as it would compete against the US in the open market. So the US flooded France with M47s so they’d abandon the AMX-50. This has been proven in Swiss archive docs which state the Swiss were trying to buy a large amount of AMX-50s, but the US was disallowing France to manufacture it. There must have been some secret agreement between the US and France that enforced this postwar imbalance, and probly played no small part in the French decision to abandon NATO command in the middle of the Cold War.

My best guess as to that 15mm MG’s role is to solely engage infantry. Given aircraft were getting incredibly fast in the late 40’s/the 50’s, a manned HMG for warding off aircraft was really a thing of the past, and helicopters weren’t a credible threat either. Also, you always get at least a snicker out of me every time the “BOMB-“ sound fx is used 😆 Either way, I’ll join the other commenters and wish you the best of health, Spookston!

The 15mm Mg 151/15 isnt a HMG, but an autocannon. It fires Solid steel rounds with driving band, and is generally more powerfull than both US and USSR 12,7mm guns (1,6 and 1,7 mt muzzle force in comparisson to 2,6 mt for the 15mm, which is more on pair with 20mm Mg 151/20 and Shvak, which have 3,0 and 2,9 mT muzzle force.)

@flu-p7o There is much more to the category for cannon than the size, which also across nations has different meanings. There is a reason even the 20mm Mg 151/20 and Mg FF/M have MG in the name, but the 20mm Flak and KwK 30/38 are cannons. Its also the power and usage. And you clearly dont have the knowlege. So no, the 15mm Mg 151/15 is a cannon, not an HMG. It was neither used like a HMG, nor intended. It is far more powefull than the other HMGs and its construction is also not like HMGs.

One day I'll understand pharmacies: Had a bit of a spook recently when the service I use to ship my rejection meds to me went, "Oh we moved your supplier to this supplier now and it was user authorized." No I didn't, I don't know who these people are. "Yes you did." After a back and forth we found out it was moved, but they didn't inform us nor was it initiated. The support I chatted with conveniently deleted their chat logs after the fact. Only found out when my rejection med refills were 'inactive'. Baffling. Anyway yeah this tank rocks. French tanks are some of the most fun in the game. The AMX 50 Surbaisse has the Foch 120mm gun, a six second reload and 19 shells in the autoloader. It's an absolute beast, along with the AMX-50 TOA100, Lorainne 40t, Somua SM and AMX-13-90. Such a good lineup.

This tank got me messed up one round. I had no idea the sides of it were so light so it caught me so off guard when I accidentally shot its side with a HE at the tracks and it actually died. When I went into protection analysis I was just flabbergasted by the fact that all the armour is in the front, I had thought the whole thing was well armoured.

It's my favorite vehicle since 2018 ! It combines german WW2 techonlogies and the Post-War french genius. Its engine is a german Maybach, the Panther II Engine modernised by a german team. The telemeter and the Mg151/15 are german too, as the tracks that are the ones used on the Tiger II. In 6 years, it received many buffs : - A 6x zoom (was 1.3x before) - A faster topspeed, about 52kph (was 49kph, but one with one gear more, meaning it reached it faster before) - A faster backward topspeed, about 20kph (was 9kph, now there are 2 gears to go beckward) Now it should have a reload speed buff, as his cannon was equipped with a swivel helping the loader? Currently 14.9 seconds, it should be less than 10 seconds (10 to 12 shots per minutes). (source : catalogue des principaux prototypes d'études de Septembre 1956, declassified in 2019)

My problem with WT heavies is a lot of them get uptiered for balance, so you have tanks like the M4A2e3 that has a short 75 at 6.3. And while I’ll concede that in this specific example, the short 75 isn’t unusable (though, it can be quite uncomfortable) at that tier, and the armor mostly justifies it, if you get in an uptier you’re pretty much just a free kill.
