When a crime hits the headlines, a light is shone on the perpetrator, their victim, and sometimes even the surrounding community. The actions of the criminal, and the suffering of their accuser all receive publicity ensuring the world knows their story. What isn't so readily known is how all that publicity affects the perpetrator's family, and the forgotten victims of crime that it creates. Michelle Raymond shares her story of being married to a man accused of some of the most heinous crimes imaginable, and how she became an indirect victim of his crimes through publicity and stigma. Michelle has moved past the shame she felt for so long to become a successful entrepreneur with a supportive family and in his moving talk, shares the importance of extending compassion to all of the victims of a crime. Michelle Raymond is the founder and director of The People’s Partner.
Although Michelle has a strong background in HR, her other passion is people empowerment and business networking which has led her to take on more mentoring roles. Aside from HR, personal development coaching and business building, Michelle is a singer, performing for the likes of Madonna, Tina Turner and even the Pope. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I lie that Camille... break out of low places. It's so easy to stay trapped and just let life pass you by, but sometimes, we have to stand up and be counted even if we know it may open up old wounds. Hopefully others will be brave enough to stand out too.

Wow! What a profound way to easily deliver a very powerful message. It's easier to judge than to complement or encourage. First, we should put ourselves in people's shoes and ask ourselves; if this were to be me, what would I have done? Thank God you were able to turn your life around, being there for your daughter and also making impact in people's lives.

The difference between a victim and a perpetrator is that the perpetrator has tried to move closer to wellness by physically acting out in an attempt to no longer feel powerless by committing a crime. In effect, they project their feelings of powerless out onto their victim and in doing so, feel more empowered. It is a reaction rising from fear. They do not realize that any action taken from a place of fear (without first coming mentally into a space of freedom) will only produce physical results coherent with powerlessness, such as prison. The victim however, has merely stayed in the state of fear and powerlessness without acting out. But still, the victim and perpetrator share the exact same energetic vibration.

What courage you have and how empowering for others Michelle. I have often wondered about the silent victims of perpetrators through association. As the spouse or partner it must be so heart-breaking but can't imagine how devastating and confusing it must also be for a mother and child! Thank you for sharing such a powerful message and so sorry that you had to go through that - but how amazingly you grew beyond and above that is truly inspiring.

@@MichelleRaymondOfficial never easy indeed - especially when it's all so public. I am reminded of a time when we were going through a particularly difficult time as a family and there was a local newspaper article with photo of my ex 'doing good in the community'. What nobody knew though was what was going on behind the scenes! So at least for us - it was just our close friends and family who were privy to the truth of it all!

My son 20yo was hit by someone on two different controlled substances that are contraindicated for being prescribed together or for driving while on them, the driver was on the phone and drove into the oncoming lane and hit my son an army reservist on his way home from work on his motorcycle. She, the white driver ,who grew up in the area was not charged with a felony or DUI despite the toxicology showing both drugs present in the system. The officer told me "Your son is no angle I could hear him speeding from the barracks" sight unseen and knowing nothing of motorcycles and muffler systems and stating how he hates motorcycles. According to PA state law, this should have been an automatic felony when you cause serious injury. My son was life-flighted to a trauma hospital and had 14 surgeries to save his life and his leg and has permanent disfigurement, infection and injury. Wayne County Pa did not give access to victim assistance as the person quit and the DA never charged the driver or spoke to my son about his account and nor did the State police. Have my son's rights been violated? and certainly, the police officer and DA have extremely unprofessional conduct in both the law and enforcement as well with possible discrimination and clear bias. Who do I contact?

We need assessments as children through schooling not intrusive and a parenting learning skill to all somehow issued through the schools or G.P raised concerns in early childhood. Education system input of professional research in rectifying major problem. All things stem from parenting and ancestries. These need putting right commanding being listened not when there problems.Copied behaviour is a problem even if your innocent. lots more to say. Like smoking. Addictions research.
