It’s a security feature so people can’t just access your phone while it’s locked. Go into settings->face id and passcode and toggle USB accessories on. It will now charge while the phone is locked.

My friend had a similar issue with his Xs Max. What he observed was that it WILL charge even if it is idle when the battery is critically low. Otherwise, it won't start charging until you wake the phone up. I observed something similar happening with the phones featured in this video.

Yup I thought I was crazy. Woke up the other day my phone was almost dead. In the car with an Apple cord, had to flip it to charge (brand new from Apple store) I’ve been paying attention as of recently because of this. I updated my 10s max to 13 whatever in the hope it would fix it, which it has not. But it is strange one cord I have to flip and another works regardless of direction? Probably the strangest issues I’ve ever had with iPhone other than batteries being crap and getting replaced. Been in the iPhone since 3GS. Apple has always been great about replacement of anything I’ve ever had an issue with. Guess we’ll see! Thanks for the video, very well made

Go to settings> Face ID and passcode; and then scroll down until you see something that says “USB accessories” and make sure that’s on, if it’s on it will charge when if doesn’t recognize your face, or when it’s locked after one hour. Don’t blame Apple, it’s a security feature so people can’t restore your device without immediate access. Hope this solved your problems.

Seems like a lot of people fixed the issue with a setting. Under Face ID & Password, by default It has USB accessories ticked off not allowing it while its locked. Just like awhile back when Apple had Wifi Assist on by default and it drove up everyone's data. Try this and see if it works!

Oh...the other Annoying Symptom of My iPad is: About 5-10x/week, it has a “battery charging spasm”! Meaning it flashes and beeps that charging sound on/of...on/of...on/off... in rapid succession like really fast! Then I try a different Lightening Cord, or a different power plug, etc. until it calms down, enough to charge! 🙄 Thanks so much for your hard work.

So obviously a year later this issue has be resolved. Didn’t know it was an issue, but you had me a little worried there as I am really digging this phone. But usually when I plug in my phone I am usually looking at it. I just hate that they include the weaker block for charging. Actually I am a little disappointed in what they included with it. I feel if your paying a minimum of $1100 that AirPods should be included over EarPods. But just my thoughts and others will probably disagree

If you're spending 800- 1,500 $ on a phone it should ALWAYS charge without any doubt, nicks, problems, conditions or discrepancies. it´s not only a XS Max model issue, it happened the same to my old iPhone 6S Plus, I change it recently to an XS Max and now I see this video, it's a shame that I didn't see it earlier. Anyway thanks for making this video, this is a hell of an issue, next I´ll move to Android!

I’ve noticed this with the iPhone 6s after installing the iOS 13 update as well. It won’t charge per plugging in the lightening cable and I’m having to flip the cable around to get an actual charge, cause it’ll say it’s charging when it’s actually not😕

People should understand iPhone XS Max is a big device! Apple INVENTED Individual App usage restrictions to save your life. When you use your phone for an Extended period of time and TRY TO CHARGE IT it will refuse to charge! It is an Expected behaviour of new iOS 12. You should do your research before bashing APPLE! This happens sometimes to my ipad air 2, and my sister's 6th gen, but i realize that it charges but the screen doesn't light up to indicate that it's charging. When i do wake them up they are charging and the notif/indication does light up! Damn, (btw imma looking for the ipad air 3)

I was having issues with my Iphone not wanting to charge, my phone would say it was charging but it would just die, or it would act like it was going to charge for a second and then it would just stop. I was using a brand new Apple branded cable and experiencing the same issues with any power supply I plugged into. Ended up buying an off brand cable at a gas station and its been working fine since. Think they just put a shit ton of bad cables on the market, but idk.
