The internet is a wondrous thing in many ways. Back in the early '70s Hallmark Hall of Fame had a program on TV that was set in Ireland. I only saw it once, but this song was in it. I could remember the melody and only the lyrics "fair colleen...the County Down". That's it. Couldn't remember what the Hall of Fame story was about anymore, but the song was stuck in my head for the last 45 years. Tonight, for whatever reason, I decided to do yet another search to try and pin down that song. And I found it :-). Now it is an "ear worm" and I probably won't be able to get it out of my head for the next two weeks. But that's okay. I have loved this song for almost a half century - when I didn't even know what song it was!

The music in here in Ireland is great I will admit that, even Metallica likes it. But the places here are actually quite nice as when you go to the curragh seeing all of the green hills especially in the evening when the sun goes down it is a sight to behold. When the sun descends it's a really beautiful thing to see. Be the same in glendalough as well.

I grew up in a rural town in the northern Denmark, raised from birth with Dubliners, Irish Rovers, Irish Descendants, Fishermans friends, the list goes on. These are the most nostalgic songs to me. I was taught to play the tin whistle by my father, and found jew's harp and accordion myself. There is no better music to me than this, and I love it.

I like to look into Irish history seeing that me great grand parents saild across the sea to escape hardships, I even got to visit Elis island were immigrants from all over came and saw my great grandmothers name on the wall with immigrants on it. Also here in Boston the basketball team is the Celtics, but pronounced seltics. Wile it should be pronounced like keltic after the celts. Where were we.... oh yeah FROM GALWAY TO DUBLIN TOWN! NO MAIDE IVE SEEN LIKE THE LIKE THE FAIR CALLIN THAT I MET IN THE COUNTY DOWN. (Also I mean no disrespect to you or we’re ever your from sorry if this bothers you it’s just a joke)

"Well, I've travelled a bit, but I've never been hit, since my roving career began. Fair and square I surrendered there, to the charm of Rosie McCann. With no heart to let, no tennant yet, there our meeting row began. An' in she went and I asked no rent, from star of the County Down"

Does anyone else get an wistful almost despair-like feeling at beautiful traditional song like this, like a feeling of we missed better times and went horribly wrong somewhere and lost transcendent values?

@ryanknowstecmobowl 1. It's funny you mention that because I'm Orthodox, the original church Rome broke from, and Ireland was free and Orthodox before the Norman invasion enforced Papal control. It's true! The Schism didn't affect the British Isles until 1066. 2. Being a tributary of the EU, a foreign bureaucracy, is not quite freedom as forefathers imagined it. Not to mention now women can kill their unborn children. St. Patrick pray for us!

We most definitely DID go horribly wrong somewhere and lose transcendent values. It's not a feeling- it's cold hard fact.
