Hey Shawn. Really love all of your videos on here and especially these featuring the Iron. You've stated in some of your videos that you don't care for the typical super loud exhaust that some guys like to put on their bikes, of which I am in full agreement. I saw one of your videos with your 72 recently where you talked about it being annoyingly loud and I was wondering if your Rush exhaust on the 883 is on par with the noise level of the 72 or has remained generally quieter while sounding great and adding a bit of performance... Thanks in advance and keep up the great work Sir!

A win on both counts Shawn! A fantastic sound and a bit of extra mid-range power (which is where you want it on a Sportster). You'll certainly get more punch from the 1200 kit, but the range on that tank will come right down too. Personally, if like you, I had the Road King too, I'd leave the Iron capacity alone and use it for it's real strengths, short/mid range runs with sufficient power to have fun and the kind of riding that the greater agility of the smaller bike can bring. Love it.
@ShawnSmoak10 жыл бұрын
Thanks pgod1960 ! The 1200 kit would be awesome, but like you say, I'd lose mileage for sure. I really don't find the bike lacking, so I'd rather use the $1,000 for the kit on something else... The Iron & Road King seem to make a really good mix. No complaints at the moment...

Those things look damn fine mate. The sound probably doesn't come across true in the video but it sure does have a good old throb to it. I think I'm likein' it, oh yes. I thought you'd get a little more power with opening up the pipes, like I mentioned when you modified the stock pipes. Nice to have a little extra eh? She actually has a more sporty sort of sound to her now too, when you're on the throttle. I've always loved the Jack Daniels style Harley logo on the tank. Great to see you back on the old roads mate.
@ShawnSmoak10 жыл бұрын
Rob Ash - Thanks Rob! I tried the XXXDeadhead trick of using a secondary audio recording of the bike on Friday, and that's going to come across 110% better. If I ever get around to producing that video, you'll love the sound... Much closer to actual. The increase in the midrange actually surprised me in that right hand turn before the school bus garage, when I rolled back on... And that was before reflashing the ECM, it's even better now. After all the miles traveled on those trips, I have to say, I'm really enjoying the cooler oxygen rich climate of the Pacific Northwest. Which, by the way, is very close to your climate. I'll eat those words when the rains set in for months on end this winter! My mother loves it, she says it reminds her of home in Ireland...

Hi Shawn, I've been riding bikes for 40 years but have learned a lot from your videos. I am thinking of buying and Iron like yours and installing a bassani 2-1 exhaust, screamin' eagle intake, 12 inch progressive shocks (I'm only 135 lbs) and tuning it with a PowerVision tuner. It will be interesting to see if it runs as well as yours with this combo. After a year I will probably do a 1250 kit for a little bit more torque.

Sounds real nice - gonna get me some. Did not think it would make such a difference to the sound but they are spot on. How do you find them noise wise - are they to load or just right for a full days riding? Sounds great!
@ShawnSmoak10 жыл бұрын
Andy Stott - Thanks Andy! I was hoping for the best, but was shocked they actually sound as good as they do. I fell in love with these mufflers when I heard them on *****'s 2014 Street Bob down in Utah. I knew going in that an 883cc Sportster was never going to sound the same as his 1,687cc Street Bob, but my expectations were far exceeded! At first I thought they may be a bit too loud (I cut most of that discussion out of the video), but after doing a recorded run with the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner and fine tuning the mapping to the mufflers, it toned them down and increased the bass sound. I took her out for about an hours ride last night, and I don't see a long ride being an issue at all. I love that I don't need to wear ear plugs as I did with the V&H Short Shots and Python exhaust systems on my other Sportsters. I couldn't be happier with them! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hi. I keep hearing comments about using the iron for short to mid range runs, my question is what do you regard as a mid range run. I have down slashes too, and love the sound. Oh and what do you use when cleaning, detergent wise. Cheers, Barry in the UK.
@ShawnSmoak10 жыл бұрын
Hi Berry, I personally would consider a mid range run on the Iron to be 300 - 400 miles in a day. As a pre-cleaner, I use Liquid Performance Cycle Wash mixed at 50%. For soap, I use a Meguiar's non wax car wash (in a purple bottle). For touch-ups, I use Windex without ammonia... All safe for the Harley Denim Black. Thanks for watching and commenting Barry!

Mike BigEasyRider - Thanks Mike! I ordered the 1.75" equipped mufflers. I don't really feel the 883 is lacking in it's current form, so I think I'll save the expense of the 1200 kit, plus the time to install it for another time... The money would be better spent on the RK anyway, as my wife wants to go for rides on it too. She did kinda stand out in the photos. I felt a little odd at times, as I had the only non black bike in the group... Thanks Mike!

I purchased the 1.75" baffled system... I really didn't want them too loud. That was part of the reason for the 'slash-down' cut choice also. I'm guessing you chose the bologna cut, or 'slash-out' to keep with the 48's styling? That style will kick out a little more sound to the people you pass (or neighbors)... @ShawnSmoak10 жыл бұрын
Yeah mine does the same thing... In fact all my sportsters have done it. It is normal, and being caused by the high metallic brake pads Harley uses to get good performance from the rear brakes. You can install a softer compound pads, but there will be a noticeable loss in performance... I usually don't pay attention to them anymore until I play back a video and hear them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@dheller77710 жыл бұрын
She sounds really good. Nice and deep for a sporty. There always seems to be a little trade off on top end for more mid range but you can probably balance it out and the trade off off if any would be negligible. I have after market exhaust on my 1200 but the stock air cleaner. I am not sure of the brand but they might be Cycle Shack. Question, if I put on a Stage 1 air cleaner would the SE Super Tuner work not knowing what exhaust I have for certain? Thanks brother and ride safe!
@ShawnSmoak10 жыл бұрын
dheller777 - Thanks dheller777 ! The truth is, we spend very little time in the top end range of our Harleys, any motorcycle for that matter. So losing a bit of top end for a gain in midrange would be just fine, though I haven't wrapped'er out to see if there was any top end loss... The Cycle Shack's that XXXDeadhead has on his 1200cc Iron sound awesome also! Maybe a touch loud for my taste, but it sounded so damn good when he'd wind her out, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! Lol The SE Super Tuner does not care what setup you have on your bike. It's going to compile data from all the sensors and make changes through the Smart Tune feature that dial your bike right in. I usually do a couple recorded runs, or until it starts to make very small changes in the mapping, to have an almost perfect base map to match my intake and exhaust. Then the adaptive nature of the ECM (approx 20% +/-) will fine tune from there... If you change something in the future, just take her out for a couple more recorded runs to see if any changes are needed. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hey Shawn, Got a question for you: I'm looking at getting back onto a bike after 20 years. Only had about 1 1/2 years riding experience. I've got an agreement to get a CB 750 right now, but at the riding club I joined that my brother in law is in, the guys are telling me get something 1100cc or bigger don't get anything under 1000cc. I'm a big stocky guy 5'8" 370lbs, and I always hear start small then go bigger. Watching your videos I see you have the bigger HDs and the 883. What your honest opinion? Stick to the plan or listen to the club?
@ShawnSmoak8 жыл бұрын
+Donald McKinnon - That's awesome that you're going to start riding again! As far as what bike to get, I say, if you like it's looks and you enjoy riding it, that's all that matters! There are always going to those telling you what you should or shouldn't ride, but it's all about what you want. I don't care about speed or power if I'm attracted to a bike. Sure fast and powerful is fun, but by no means the gauge for what to ride. I'm 5'8" and 225, and I can assure you a CB750 is faster and more powerful than my Iron 883, but shy of a race track or long straightaways, it will keep up in a crowd. I've been on group rides with it and it's perfectly fine. Take the CB750 for a ride and make sure you're not over powering the bike and suspension. If not, and you're comfortable on it, that's all that matters. It's most important that you like the bike and how it performs for you personally! Good luck, and be safe out there... Thanks!

An 883 has the same stroke as a 1200, which is where it gets that deep sound from. The 1200 will make more power, and sound better at higher speeds because it turns at a slower RPM. However, putting a 1200 kit on an 883 won't really gain you much, as the 1200 as it comes from the factory has higher overall gearing than the 883, allowing the engine to turn slower at highway speed. High RPM is what kills the sound. So what did all those electronics cost, and what do they do? Do they actually retune the EFI to the new mufflers, or just give you information? One of the problems I have with EFI is how expensive it is to retune. With a carb you just change a couple of $5 jets.

The SE 1200cc kit from Harley is literally a complete production XL1200 top-end Heads, cylinders, pistons, etc... It's an instant 40% power increase! The increase is quite substantial..! It's even further impressive with the 883's lower gearing. If the 883's lower gearing is of concern, simply install the primary gearing from a 1200... Quite simple. RPM has nothing to due with 883-vs-1200 the sound, other than it being approximately 700 rpm's higher on the 883. Bomb down the hwy at 70 mph in fourth gear on a 1200, it sounds just like an 883... The 1200 will have a slightly deeper sound due to it's larger displacement and totally different head combustion chamber (the 883 is very Japanese/Hemi like...). The SE Super Tuner Pro (discontinued via lawsuit with feds) used to cost $500 and allows total fine tuning of the bike. It also provides all the information on how the bike is running, any trouble codes and whatnot... Thanks for watching and commenting Gerald!

If you change the gearing, then you have exactly the same thing as a factory 1200. Gearing has a lot to do with everything. First of all, 1200cc will not raise the top speed of the 883 without taller gearing. Harley engines are not meant to be run fast. With their offset firing order and long stroke, they will literally tear themselves apart. That wonderful vibration a Harley motor makes is because it is trying to tear itself apart. The Japanese solved this problem in their v-twins(if that's what you want to call it) by using wider v angles and offset crankpins, making a v-twin that runs perfectly smooth. But that is not what a v-twin is about to me. It is supposed to vibrate and make that wonderful offbeat sound at idle like only a Harley can do. But in order to make their motors last under that stress, they had to build them a lot stronger. Still they had problems with motor mount bolts loosening and breaking so they went to rubber mounts. One version of the Twin Cam actually has an internal chain driven counterbalancer to make it vibrate less. The Sportster engines still vibrate, but you don't feel it as much because they were rubber mounted in 2004. RPM has everything to do with sound. As the engine turns faster, you loose that sound that Harley motors make at idle, and the faster they turn, the worse it gets. You get more vibration, but at high rpm, that hammering sound goes away, and you just get a drone. The reason a 1200 is an improvement is mainly because you can ride at higher speeds without increasing the rpm till it no longer sounds like a Harley. Yes, it will also accelerate faster, climb grades without as much downshifting, basically do everything a larger motor with more power does better than a smaller motor, Small motors have to turn faster to make power. A 1200, with higher gearing, will be a lot more relaxed and less busy sounding out on the road. If I remember correctly, a 1200 Sportster, and a 1349 EVO have about the same bore and stroke as a 350ci small block Chevy, and about the same redline. The redline is set by piston speed and weight.

Got to say that sounds totally different, it does sound a lot deeper, I have to get my Street Bob stage one tuned, I had V&H slip ons but the backfiring on the over run is too much, I will be getting attention from the police if I am not careful.
@ianmckay916910 жыл бұрын
Sounds like exhaust leak. V&H don't backfire if all is tight and secure.

Bob Kilsby - I wish that the GoPro picked this up the way it actually sounds! My noise cancelling headphones do a really good job of coming close when playing this back. I cut the part out of this video where I discuss intake and/or exhaust mods without EFI tuning or rejetting if carbureted, as I can go on forever... Lol But you will experience a good amount of decel popping without tuning. Plus, the performance gain of your exhaust is not realized until it's tuned also. You're just making a lot of cool sounds that makes you believe you have gained performance... If you are getting full-on heavy backfiring from the exhaust, you may have an exhaust leak! If you had to move the headers around quite a bit while getting everything lined up on the install, you may have damaged a header exhaust gasket... An air leak at the header gasket will cause some crazy backfiring! A fuel management system will change the decel enleanment mapping and stop the decel popping, if that's all you're getting. In my Utah Meetup videos, you'll clearly hear StripBolt's and Gabe's Street Bobs decel popping throughout the videos. They installed exhaust without mapping... XXXDeadhead's Iron and my Road King have zero decel popping after the Harley Stage-1 reflashing. XXX had the dealer flash his Iron when they installed the 1200 kit and exhaust, and I purchased the Screamin Eagle Pro Super Tuner kit and flashed the RK myself. Sorry, didn't mean to write a book! Lol Thanks for watching and commenting Bob!

Thought I'd jump in being I just bought a 2014 Street Bob and installed some V & H Straightshot slip ons. When I first installed them i got a lot of decel poping, which you may be mistaking for backfiring. But after I install a new high flow air intake and fuel management its pretty much gone. I used the V & H FP3 Bluetooth tuner and it worked great. The unit uses an app on your smart phone to flash your bike after choosing which pipes and baffles you are using. After you flash your bike you can leave it hooked up to see real time results of how your bikes running or you can remove the unit all together. Hope this helps, if not sorry. And BTW Shawn your Iron sounds awesome. I also have a 2013 iron 883 but use the V & H Twin Slash slip ons but prefer the sound of the Rush slip ons you are using. Great Vlogs and keep up the good work. I really enjoy watching your videos.

Shawn Smoak Shawn, this is exactly what I wanted to hear. I installed V&H Slip ons, and I have a lot of decel popping, but I'm about to do my stage 1 upgrade with SE Super tuner this weekend, and it's good to know this will pretty much alleviate this. Thanks man, you are full of good information, long winded or not! lol.. j/k!

Hey man, I am wondering if you have an easy adjustment that can be made to get it into neutral easy. I bought my wife one of these and hers doesn't like neutral at all.

Nice video Shawn. I'm from Brazil and we have a nice deep sound muffler brand called Cobra. I have them on my 2014 iron and I love the sound. Looks like your rush's mufflers, deep and loud but not anoying. Check out some KZbin vids on "escape cobra". They have a nice one with 3" and ajustable rear cut. Tks

Hey Shawn just want your opinion here, so I'm looking to get my first bike as a brand new rider and I'm really debating wether to go with the 16 iron or 16 roadster. I'm in love with the way the iron looks but I'm worried I'll get bored with the power eventually and regret buying it over the roadster. Is there a way to increase the power on the iron to make it like a 1200 later on down the road? Money's not really an issue so the price difference won't come into any effect. Your thought on this would be greatly appreciated!

There are 1200cc kits that fit the iron 883 that will give it literally 1200cc power, They are about $900 and if you like the iron for looks, get it and don't look back!

I started with a Dyna Fat bob, and traded for a 2016 883. I love the dyna, it was just kinda bulky for me. It was hard to move through twisties. Im looking to get a 1200 kit for it real soon.

I've should have known your pipes weren't stock pipes. Are they much louder or just sounding better. Over here in France 🇫🇷 they get harder on everything that's not original. Insurance may not pay off after an accident if they find out that your bike wasn't stricktly original!

Hey Shawn! Don't know how I came across this one again but I'm glad I did. Haha! I just happened to be looking at a little Iron with 179 miles. Good price too! cleanharleys.com/vehicles/1716/2015-harley-davidson-sportster-883-iron-xl883n I had a pair of Rush mufflers on my 2001 RoadGlide when I had it. Great sounding pipes and I also liked the "slash-down" look. Your Iron sounds SO good. I think I'd like to do the exact same setup with the SE Stage One air cleaner and Rush mufflers with SE Tuner if I get an Iron. Ride safe!! ~Ryan

i bet you,ll lose some top end power with your midrange increase...
@ShawnSmoak10 жыл бұрын
bobbysatwat - I'm thinking the same thing... Good thing top end is seldom used and midrange is the perfect spot for an increase! I haven't wound her out hard to see what kind of top end changes were made. The SE Super Tuner only made small changes to the bottom end and lower midrange (0~40% throttle / 900~3,500 rpm) over the modded stock mufflers. The mapping was still dead-on everywhere else... Thanks for watching and commenting!
