Duck and Cover is actually a good tactic, but only if you're outside of the thermal radius. In this outer area the risk of being vaporized or burned is low, but there is still a shockwave that'll knock down trees, power lines and shatter glass, so ducking into a secure position (closet, basement, sturdy desk, etc.) and covering yourself with as much protection as possible gives you a better chance at surviving if you'll even want to, because depending on the yield and method of detonation there could be that pesky radioactive fallout to deal with.

Fun fact, if you’re not at ground zero or the immediate fallout radius (which even for modern nukes is less that people tend to think) everything you can put between yourself and the detonation site helps, and ducking puts you below most school and office windows which would serve as amplifiers. If you live in DC duck and cover is stupid, but with current nukes if you live 15-20 miles outside of DC it could save your life

There was a scene that was cut from the film that I really hope gets added back eventually. It explained that there were millions of identical iron giants in space that were built to invade our planet sometime in the future to destroy humanity. Our main giant was only one of them who crash landed on earth by mistake. This was why he had the defense mechanism that caused him to destroy, it’s what he was meant to do. In the cut scene, Dean found this out early, which was why he he lashed out and called the giant a weapon and a gun. Here’s the link to the scene below… kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaSvYXqYqNx5aas
@teamtx15782 жыл бұрын
They put that scene in the extended edition as well as an extra scene between Dean and Annie in the diner.
@22Tesla2 жыл бұрын
I saw that scene, thought I don't think the Giant's are intended to destroy humanity. I mean, the scene of the alien planet getting obliterated before we see hundreds of identical robots, is seen from the ground. I see it as the giant's planet got attacked, and maybe destroyed the planet as the "ultimate solution" against the invaders. My evidence is mostly a theory, but why I say this: if your giant walking gun is sent to attack other planets: a) why give it a safe mode? I mean, you build a tank, it looks like a tank. It doesn't need a safe mode to make it look more friendly. If the giant was intended to be a weapon only, why make it look so un-threatening? Massive size aside, the Giant looks like an un-threatening robot until he pulls out his guns when threatened b) why make it so when they crash land they get ammensia and forget their prime directive to destroy? Since the Giant crashlands on earth head first. And if you were intending to send a giant robot to lay waste to a planet, why put the computer that's driving it in a place that's so easily damaged? I mean, the metal on his head dents so easily, even for a machine that can survive being nuked. And.... c) WHY give your weapon a brain that can learn useless information and chose to go against its programming? I know, the aliens who made the Giant probably gave it a human-like brain so it could adapt to a changing battlefield, but still, you'd think the main directives of your super weapon wouldn't be so easily lost and instead your steel beast becomes more human, building up enough data and learning concepts like life/death and the concept of choice, when that would turn your weapon into a man. It's that reason which makes me think the giant was meant for more peaceful actions on his planet, only unleashing his guns when threatened by something as small as a hand gun which, to his knowledge, kills robots like him. It's like a police officer donning a bullet proof vest and helmet during extreme situations. But that's just my way of looking at it and sorry to kinda rant about it. Just my two cents

The ending was a hard moment because that idiot mansley literally screwed up big time by having the missle launched over the town. The giant makes a tough decision to sacrifice himself in order to save the people and the town. The moment he hurls into the missle, I cried a little, then I said, "you did what you had to do." Although, they never explained what happened to mansley in the aftermath. I'm hopeful he got fired and ended up into some type of prison for what he did. If only they'd make a sequel.

Here is some interesting facts about the film. The Iron Man: The Musical concept album, released in 1989, is an adaptation of Ted Hughes' story The Iron Man(1968), produced and largely composed and performed by Pete Townshend of The Who. It also stars Roger Daltrey, Deborah Conway, John Lee Hooker, and Nina Simone. The three then-surviving members of The Who (Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Townshend) performed as a group in two songs. A full stage version was mounted at the Young Vic theatre in London in 1993. On the strength of this, Warner Bros. optioned the story for a movie which, with a very different adaptation of the story, became The Iron Giant; Townshend received an Executive Producer credit for the film version. the original story had TIM coming to earth, befriending Hogarth and eventually the whole town, and defeating a giant galaxy sized alien dragon that wants to eat the earth. Brad Bird was in part inspired to make this movie as a memorial to his sister Susan, who died at the hands of her husband by gun violence. His pitch was this: "What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?" "Frank" and "Ollie," the two trainmen that Kent interviews after the derailment, are caricatures of Disney classic animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston two animators of classic Disney films and cartoons and two members of Disney's famed Nine Old Men. They also perform the voices for the characters. The Signature Edition(2015) adds two new scenes that were storyboarded for the original film, but were never fully animated until this release. In the first, Dean and Annie have a conversation at the diner right before the farmer sells dean the tractor with the bite taken out of it. In the second, the Iron Giant has a dream in which he leads an army that takes over and destroys a alien world that is seen by dean on the TV , explaining the scene in the final film of him telling Hogarth the giant is dangerous. also In the original, Hogarth finds the Giant's hand watching the TV, showing an advertisement for Maypo Cereal. Director Brad Bird initially wanted an ad for the Disneyland attraction Tomorrowland. Disney would not not grant clearance to use this footage back 1999, when the film was originally shown. Disney allowed the footage to finally be used when Brad Bird directed the film version of Tomorrowland , which was released the same year as the Signature Edition. The one i have is the The Ultimate Collector’s limited Edition number 1,230 of 15,000 that includes: - A letter from Director Brad Bird to the fans - Five Mondo Art Cards - Beautiful 32-Page Book - Collectible Iron Giant Figurine and the Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD Combo Pack

Something I specifically love about this movie is the General. In most movies, a general is portrayed as a crazy whacko who instantly goes to nukes. This general is level-headed, constantly adapts to the situation, is trying to ensure civilians survive and secure the giant. He is lied to that a kid has gotten killed and is talked into using a nuke, which he quickly reacts to with “Are you MAD?” He RESPECTS the power that a Nuke has and plays his cards carefully. He then finds out the kid (Hogarth) is still alive and things can potentially end safely and for a third time, adapts… only for Mansley to screw everything up.

I also like the fact that this movie is a. Piece movie it was smart to have this movie take place in the 1950s instead of instead of a modern time

This movie came out when I was in the third grade. It was a point in my life when everything was changing. My parents were split up I was living in another state at a new school, this movie was there for me, and it always will be. "You are who you choose to be"

Hey Twins the school song "Duck and Cover" back when our parents or grandparents were in like elementary school,back then that's what they were told to do hide under your desk whenever the bomb threat sirens went off. I guess if the school got bombed the best place other than a shelter was under your school desk. That's what they were taught back then. No joke!!

This is a wholesome feel good Sci Fi Comedy drama film from Brad Bird, whom would later direct The Incredibles and Incredibles 2. The film was a box office bomb, but but has now gone on to become a cult classic.

The concept if the movie was basically "What if a gun didn't want to be a gun?"

I did appreciate the comments about the resourcefulness of taping the flashlight to the BB gun... without taking into account that the swell of the lamp completely blocks the muzzle.

One of the most underrated movies. I love it every time. Trivia: it was supposed to end on a darker note with the Giant just being blown up but at the last minute it was changed so the end scene was the pieces being put together again. Also, rumored, there was a talked about sequel but the movie didn't do well when it first came out in theaters. It gained much more attention and fame after the fact.

This movie is one of my all time favourite. The story is amazing, the animation is great, the voice acting is phenomenal and the directing is spot on. The scene where the Iron Giant chooses to be a hero rather than a weapon of war by sacrificing himself has made me cry every time I´ve seen this movie. Not because it´s sad but because it´s one of the purest examples of what people can accomplish in life. As Hogarth said, you are who you CHOOSE to be!

duck and cover is what we were taught. climb under the desk , keep your eyes closed to the flash and that four extra cans of tuna your moms had put back would last until the danger was over and you could go back outside. i am nearly seventy.

An under appreciated classic, The Iron Giant, that Warner Bros & theatre owners mis-handled. “Duck & Cover” was promoted at many schools in 1950s until early 1960s. Did you know that Brad had worked on the screenplay for The Incredibles since 1992? Brad Bird moved from Warner to Pixar (2000-2001), where they realized his talent. (The Incredibles, Ratatouille) The late John Mahoney, voiced the General.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie when I saw it long ago, I love the Iron Giant. I enjoyed Ready Player One (2018) and one of my favorite things about it was the appearance of The Iron Giant.
@kevinwilson1402 жыл бұрын
The implications of the iron giant are really troubling. It's a robot designed to look like it doesn't have weapons. Not a lot of peaceful applications for a thing like that. Perhaps more disturbing is that the dent on his head disappeared then reappeared as his personality changes. It means he didn't bump his head, his harmless personality is programmed. It could be here to test our defenses, bumble around destroying infrastructure in an innocent way till it causes a hostile response then game on.

Those "Duck & Cover" films were still a thing in grade school in the 1970s. Few people nowadays can comprehend just how much an existential threat the Cold War Era was - recent 'hot' wars in Korea and Vietnam, each side backed by a superpower literally capable of destroying the entire planet a dozen times over. Numerous close calls such as the Cuban Missile Crisis (and surely many others that we never knew about at the time) resulted in an indescribable combination of exuberance and dread... living each day as it might be your last when any random event could turn global annihilation into reality. As hokey as a lot of those films are in retrospect, they did go a long ways towards convincing the public that surviving a nuclear war was possible.

I cried just watching the review...the Superman scene gets me every time. I remember when this came out and I skipped it thinking it was an E.T. rippoff and I was 19 thinking I was "too cool for kids movies" (I cringe at my past self). OMG...I'm glad I watched it with my kids years later. I was SO surprised at how awesome it is! One of my all time favorites. Another one was "Cats Don't Dance". I misjudged it, it's actually pretty fabulous!
