Fun fact, the Iron Giant was based on a novel from 1968 called "The Iron Man" and in that movie he challenges and I'm not kidding, a "Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon".

I read that book in 5th grade, and I thought the Dragon was the coolest thing ever. Now, if the big lizard had appeared in the movie and got to do battle with the Iron Giant, I think he would have been voiced by Tim Curry. Does anyone else agree?

So fun fact: there’s actually a deleted scene where it shows the giant dreaming and his dreams transmit to Dean’s TV. In it, it shows that he was from a race of literal thousands of giant war robots that went from planet to planet and destroyed them. Dean catches glimpses of it himself on the TV and is kind of terrified from it before the giant ends up waking up, yelling in a panic. Not sure why they got rid of it. Might’ve been too dark or removed a lot of the mystery of what the Giant was. Edit: I owned a VHS copy for years that didn’t include this scene, so it sounds like it was included in more recent releases of it like BluRay, so forgive me for my ignorance to that fact.

I think it was said in a behind-the-scenes interview, that it was taken out to give more weight to when he transforms. It becomes more of a shock when you see him "turn" on Hogarth at the dump.

@tonybippitykaye

@@justanicemelon9963 It is a beautifully animated and creepy scene, especially with the look of terror on Dean’s face and the somewhat justification for his eventual blow up in the junkyard towards the giant. However, I think the twist of seeing what he really is after he thinks Hogarth is killed is much more impactful and freaky. Speaking of, you can actually find it on KZbin if you search it. I think it’s also included in some DVD releases if I’m not mistaken.

It's really such a tragic shame that this movie bombed at the box office. It's about as perfect as a "childrens" movie can get. When watching this as a child, this movie actually made me cry, specifically the ending when his head is found within the snow. Extremely hard to get such a raw emotional reaction out of me from a piece of media but this is one of the few that did it. Giants such a good character and the animation is so good. 10/10 movie.

Terrible marketing! None of the restaurants and other buildings that were supposed to put up signs did, hardly any posters up at the movie theaters, trailers (especially the ones made for tv) made The Iron Giant up to be like some kind of action robot film! There’s a “making of” documentary for the movie on KZbin that goes a little bit into it, my favorite part being that Del Toro called up Brad Bird after the film came out as a box office failure, told him not to worry about it because he made a FILM CLASSIC.

Two reasons why I think he works: 1. He isn’t some nut job, that nobody believes when talking about monsters or aliens. He literally starts off, not taking the job that seriously, only for the worst things to happen to him, which forces him to try to convince himself to believe that the Giant is real, which the creators managed to pull off quite early. And it makes it all the more funnier that nobody ends up believing him as even he thinks he’s going crazy. 2. While, he may sound like a dude just throwing threats around to get what he wants out of people, it’s not like he comes empty-handed. The scene where he interrogates Hogarth and threatens to take him away from his mother has some truth to it, when looking back. Kent has evidence that links Hogarth to the power station accident and he could probably find something to pin Hogarth at the train wreck. But if word got out that these incidents were caused by a child, the town may start throwing concern to where the child’s parents were in all this. Even Annie testified to Kent that Hogarth was out that night. With this in mind, the ultimatum becomes more clear. Hogarth can take the blame for the Giant’s recklessness, which may cause the public to look down upon him and his mother, leading for him to be taken away. Or he chooses to reveal where the Giant is.

One of my favorite things about this movie is the giant's journey, Because he went from being a world destroying weapon to a planet saving hero. Because it was thanks to Hogarth and all of the experiences that the giant had on Earth, That he realized that he could be so much more than just a mindless war machine and the giant decided of his own free will to become a force for good. Even though he's still technically a weapon whether it's for good or for evil.

Fun fact, the iron giant was made by the same animators who animated 8 Crazy nights. Even the deer look the same.

Weird Fact, there was a scene at the end that didn't pass the script because it was too dark which is basically Mansley facing a firing squad noticing one of the parts of the giant moving in the distance

this movie scared the shit out of me as a kid, just the white eyes glowing in the darkness freaked me out in the beginning. didnt help my window in my room looked over some distant trees with two lights that mimicked those eyes perfectly above the tree line when it was night. one of my fav movies, always makes me cry, next to Lion King and Aristocats

Funny enough, your comment about “The Iron Giant accidentally kills the deer” is very similar to something that happens in the newest Transformers comic series. Optimus Prime is experiencing Earth for the first time, and taking in its beauty, when he accidentally steps on a deer. He’s saddened by it and it dawns on him how soft and fragile Earth and its creatures are. The writer of the comic even said that it was a direct homage to this film!
