I think this story also takes inspiration from Dragon Ball Z. Think about it, an alien (Goku/Giant) who comes from a race of world destroyers (Saiyans/other Giants) crashes on Earth and hits his head, losing his memory of the past, he meets a young human (Bulma/Hogarth) who teaches him about compassion and friendship. He eventually learns the truth of his origins and how dangerous his powers can be and has to sacrifice himself (though on more than one occasion) to save his friends from some greater threat.
