When a dealer advertises one price and then says it is sold or not available when you get there and tries to get you to buy a different, more expensive vehicle, it is called "bait and Switch," and is illegal in most states.
@jmackinjersey1
@jmackinjersey1 4 жыл бұрын
Except in the case where that vehicle actually has been sold. I have had countless times when a person calls and says they are interested in a vehicle, and want to buy it, or at least come look at it. So I go get the keys and actually put my hands on the car, call them with my cell and even take a pic and send it to them to verify. Then I remind that person that there are ten (or more) other salesmen working at this dealership, and if they want to guarantee the car is there when they arrive, that they need to put a refundable deposit to hold the car. Of course most will say no, and take that chance. There are a lot of people that will say they are on their way to the dealership, or make an appointment, and show up a day later. As a salesman, if we are holding the keys, and another salesman asks us for the keys to show someone else, unless we are actually working a deal with the client in the showroom, or a deposit, then we have to give up the keys. And guess what, we sell cars on a regular basis, sometimes several every hour. There are also times when a car is dealer traded, and salesmen don't have any control over that situation either. So no, that is not bait and switch, nor a false claim. Bait and switch is when you tell the guy that the car is there, and you know you don't have it, or placed the ad without ever having one, but you try to get them to buy a different one when they get to the store. Definition: the action (generally illegal) of advertising goods which are an apparent bargain, with the intention of substituting inferior or more expensive goods.
@Flydevice1
@Flydevice1 4 жыл бұрын
Haha, they did that me, saw a brand new ram 2500 Cummins for 42k when all the other ones where 55k and up. Went there, said the truck must have been sold cause it wasn’t in the lot, showed me expensive ones. Luckily I change salesperson and the guy found the truck in the back hidden away. End up taking the truck for the advertised price since I got the vin and photos of the website.

@jmackinjersey1

@@AwkwardYet , Because they combine ALL of the rebates and incentives that are available to get to that price. They used to do this in print ads a lot. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't like this method, but it works to get people in the door. Then when people get to the dealership I have to sit down with them and ask if they are a Veteran/First Responder, have a GM vehicle(or conquest vehicle), have bought from the dealership in the last year, etc. the list goes on. Then when they would say yes or no, I could add or subtract the rebates that they do qualify for. Some would get upset, some of those guys would leave, but the ones that stayed would understand and continue with the buying process. You have to read the fine print. If they did not disclose those rebates in the ad (online/print) then there is a gray area about false advertising and bait and switch. I say gray area, because there have been court cases where the dealership/advertising client told the advertising outlet to put those words in the ad, but the advertising outlet did not for one reason or another. In the past, there were a lot of false advertisements and bait and switch ad campaigns going on. But for the most part, with all of the scrutiny going on, especially for dealerships, the marketing department is keen on the laws and holds to those rules quite tightly, not only for fear of getting fired, but also for fear of being caught up in a court case, which could ruin your marketing career. Think of it like a skateboarder riding the rail with the tip of his board. It is a fine line, and if done wrong, it can end badly, but if done correctly, it is a spectacle of amazement. It is also just like an ad with large numbers showing a great price. But what you typically don't catch with your eye the first time you see the ad is the phrase, "as low as" in fine print somewhere on the ad. Then you have to find out what that means.

@@Flydevice1, Yeah, there are a lot of lazy salesmen out there. The thing is, (IF) a salesman is paid on commission, it is based on margin, so the price of the truck really doesn't matter to his paycheck. What matters is how close to the MSRP he sells it to you for, and how much he pays for the trade in. When it comes to like for like vehicles, the mark up is typically close. But listening to the client and getting them what they are asking for in a timely manner is what builds trust and leads closer to a sale.

John Henry Lol not always necessarily the case. I’ve bribed salesman to hold and hide trucks in the back for me in the past. I know I’m not the only one who’s done this either. They might’ve already had someone wanting that truck before these guys bought it. Not only that but salesman like to hide certain vehicles in the back for certain personal reasons as well especially if add Ons have been added to the truck. This is the most accurate video of buying a new vehicle I’ve ever seen. It’s always a complete pain the in the ass and involves multiple dealerships to get the “deal” you want. And I use “deal” loosely, because at the end of the day you’re still getting screwed.

dealerships are a form of organized crime......All of us should be able to configure and purchase our products from the manufacturer. It is why Tesla meets such resistance in certain states because of the dealership lobby trying to keep that model of business out of the state. When you are dropping 30k+ on a vehicle you should not be dealing with compromises in spec, color etc.
@randomuserame
@randomuserame 4 жыл бұрын
ex-pro tips: [long post, buckle in] If you finance, you're getting screwed. Pay cash, always. Hunt for incentives and MFG rebates. If you're using blue book, you're getting screwed. You want NADA/"black book"; You want bankers' values not resellers (dealer's) values. You want invoice/cost price, not sticker/MSRP. You want ALL dealer-added extras taken off or free. Otherwise abandon the car. Have the car re-certified on your own if you MUST have it certified. You want to make them LOSE on the deal, and barring that, they should barely break even. Anything else and you're getting screwed. The dealer, even if they're nice people, are NEVER on your side unless you've got a disgruntled employee who's literally going to quit after you sign. DON'T add extras with the paperwork guy. NONE of them. Period. Try to get something for free... not deferred cost, FREE free. Make them LOSE on the deal. NEVER visit only 1 dealership. ALWAYS visit at least 2/3. Each individual dealer visit will be several hours long, possibly the entire day. Plan ahead, take the whole day off. you MIGHT get lucky and be there for only 3(ish). Probably not. Print out comparable vehicles within a 200mi radius of any given dealer for any given car. Compare 3Ms; same Make, Model, and Mileage. Get these ready before your first visit. Go RIGHT to the vehicle. Do not let them up-sell/side-sell you on another vehicle. GRILL them on why their price is isn't lower (even if they're the lowest; make some shit up... because they will too). Get them to go lower than competitor/similar vehicles on other lost, have them write it on your sheets, get their sales manager to sign on the "pre-committment". Then "go home to think about it" (home is immediately to the next dealership, bring those papers with you) Repeat until you run out of dealerships. WAIT AT LEAST 2 DAYS, Whatever car you REALLY want, go that dealer, bring the sheet with the lowest cost on a competing vehicle. If the car IS the lowest of them all, Demand a lower price anywyas. If they say no, WALK. Then wait 2-3 days for the email saying there's a price drop at/below your asking price. If it's not at/below, or you don't get the email within FIVE days.... go to the second-best dealer. Tell them you want the EXACT car from you REALLY want, and ONLY that one, and and you will buy it from them SPECIFICALLY if they can manage to buy it from the other dealer. Tell them you will commit to signing if they can pull it off (they can... it's a hassle, but they can, if they say they can't they're lying).... make sure you get them to lock in a price lower than your "real" ask... they will likely try to shaft you with dealer-to-dealer delivery and "processing" costs. Might be good to "tentatively" lock in a price and re-evaluate on arrival to check for any damage during transit. (Make some shit up, especially if it was driven instead of trucked over). MAKE. THEM. LOSE. Also, Don't buy anything that hasn't been on the lot for at least 30 days, preferably 60+. Track cars to see if they've been at other dealerships before (usually in the carfax). Get CARFAX and check the VIN for recalls. Every "ding" on the report is a discount you need to ask for. If the car was in a snow state, knock off discount for salt damage/corrosion. If they won't give you the discounts. WALK. (And actually walk). If you're already at/below your ask, don't ask for more discounts, take the bird in the hand. If you can afford to travel, buy "losers" out-of-market. Buy sports cars in the dead of winter in the snow belt, buy A HUMMER in the middle of downtown in the spring. Buy the car you want where nobody is buying them FROM. Your starting negotiations will be much lower. All this assumes you've done research on the car you want, reliability, repair records, etc. Buy "winners" in-market. Buy SUVs from dealers close to suburbs. Buy trucks between farmland and city. Depends on the car, down to make/model in most instances. Lots of price research from across the country and across at least a year per vehicle class and type will be needed. If you MUST finance, you can't afford the car... but you might be worse off WITHOUT a car... so in that case DON'T put anything down. Down payments don't come off the top, it gets added at the bottom. Again for the ones in the back. DOWN PAYMETS ARE ADDITIONAL COST INCREASE, NOT A DISCOUNT FROM STICKER. If you MUST put a down payment, immediately file a UCC-1 financing statement (look up how to do that). Your down payment constitutes a valid (partial, but "perfected") legal claim against the vehicle and if un-challenged, overrides other unperfected claims. -former used car salesman

This is one of the dumbest comments I've ever seen. You can literally go to websites like Truecar.com and see what a fair price is right from home, and even email multiple dealerships with your offer essentially making the deal without leaving your house. When I recently purchased my car my only trip to the dealership was to pick up my new vehicle which was already cleaned and gassed up with plates on it ready to go. I signed a few pieces of paper and I was on my way. The problem is that people like you are stuck in the "old school" way of buying a car, and assume everyone is "ripping you off" and you have to drive all over the state chiseling away at reasonable offers to save yourself $100 extra dollars. That's what salesman hate dealing with. Also, for the comment above, cash vs finance does not save a single penny aside from the interest fees you will be paying. Often times new car manufacturers even run 0% interest rates, so there is no interest at all. A dealership does not care if you're paying with a bag of cash, a bank check, or signing up for financing, in the end they get their money and you get a car.
@avanti2k
@avanti2k 4 жыл бұрын
King Jerbear Agree with most of what you said but it does make a difference if you tell them you’re going to finance because if they think they can get their money back by screwing you with the interest rate they’re more likely to meet your price, That’s why many dealer want to know your Social Security number in the beginning so they can check your credit score to know what is the best interest rate there is for you and they will add one or two point on that. So the best strategy for the buyer is to pretend you’re going to finance it but at the end just pay cash or take the hiked up interest rate but pay it off immediately after one or two payments
@KingJerbear
@KingJerbear 4 жыл бұрын
@@avanti2k They check your credit score so they can quote accurate payments, and make sure you can actually afford the car you're looking for. Whether they think they can "screw you" on the backend doesn't matter, because you can easily secure your own financing if your credit is up to snuff

When I was buying my sisters 2019 Veloster they showed a different price online than what they told me in person. I called before going to the dealer to ask about the price and they told me that was the OTD price before taxes, doc fees, and registration without any incentives or specials deducted. The good think is that I went in on the last open day of the quarter an 1 hour before closing with the phone call with the sales rep telling me that the price advertised on the site is the OTD price without deductions. In the end I got the car for the price I wanted.

The "if you can't give us this price, we gotta go" works everytime, went to a dealership asking 36k, I said 33,000 bank drafted right now or we're going to the dealership next door, he said thats impossible so we left, 2 days later the sales person called me saying he could make 33,000 work. The tip here is to shop at the end of the month cycle because these guys have a quota that they have to make to receive incentives from the manufacturer, if they are a couple cars away from that quota, they'd rather lose a few grand in a car than not receive tens of thousands of dollars from the car company. Also if you're financing, please don't tell them your budget, they will max the shit out of that budget of yours.

Some tips and thoughts from someone who works in the industry (and specifically sells GM): Unfortunately most dealerships will tell you they have a vehicle that's listed (usually called an ad"leader") for listed price JUST to get you in the door and switch you. It's a bad tactic and being upfront is always the best policy. In some states (not mine) they can list new vehicles with ALL the discounts and rebates applicable. So funky stuff like farmers owners rebate or other shit like that they can advertise but once they get you interested and present numbers they start taking away discounts saying you don't qualify. Telling them you are willing to pay cash isn't helping you. Dealerships make more money off of finance. Also in some states, it's illegal to change the price based on method of payment. That business card bullshit was something else lmao. That didn't seem right. Nice truck by the way and congrats!
@Kben01
@Kben01 4 жыл бұрын
Dealers hate that shit lol. The bank actually charges them back the amount they pay the dealership if it isn't financed for more then like 3 months. Its actually funny. The business card thing is actually kind of legit. When a business buys a vehicle they most provide proof of business ownership to turn into GM for rebates and state licensing and shit. The fact they would only accept a card is shady af. Other things would have worked for sure. That guy was just being a lazy fuck.

Dude, I just swooped a new truck for the same reasons, I am in Utah, and I have to say dealerships are a total pain in the BUTT! Just a big run around. That is a great truck though. great purchase!

Same shit happened to be last summer at Greico Ford in Ft. Lauderdale. Looking at the price, I thought this has to be an error. So I called the dealership and they confirmed the price. Go to Rocky Ridge website and the "Mad Rock" model is discontinued. So I figure 41k is possible. Get to the dealership today at 2pm. Meet with Sales Associate and he pulls up the stock number on truck and confirms price. I play the sales game and wait for almost an hour to have them pull the truck out. That shortened my patience. Then I test drive the truck For 85k MSRP and it's an XLT. Nothing over the top about it. Get back to the dealership sit at the cubicle forever waiting for the numbers on my trade in and my keys to the truck. The sales associate comes over and tells me there was an error and the truck is actually going for 65K. I walk over to the manager to get my keys and the manager asked "what's up?" I told him I was very annoyed I just wasted 3 hours of my life after being told multiple times the price listed was correct. He responses "Yeah Right! That's an 85k dollar truck. We would never sell it for that. I said "Well it's a year old left over XLT model with a lift kit and a horrendous front bumper so I can definitely see that price being possible. Oh additionally Rocky ridge website States that model has a BDS lift kit with fox coilovers and fox rear 2.0. instead it looked like a basic $900 rough country lift. No sign of coil overs. Needless to say I will never visit that dealership again.

Most people do not understand how long it takes to buy a new vehicle these days. Most of the time they suggest that you set aside a whole day to get it done sometimes into the next day depending on what "EXTRAS" you added to the deal so it has to be run through their shop. One of my coworkers was looking for a very specific make , model ,year ,accessories. Couldn't find one within 1,000 miles of MN. He found one on the East coast. He did a lot of communication with them. Put money down. Did the purchase agreement with taxes , fees, title transfer etc. ,etc. Had the bank cashiers check all done. He flew out East on a flight. Got a taxi to the hotel. Had their sales person pick him up from the hotel and take him to the dealership. Got the car bought . Spent 2 more days driving it back home. He bought it sight unseen until he showed up to take it. It took him 3 days to make it happen and get it home. His wife loved the car. That's what matters.

It's can't take anything away from you! Not unless you owe money on backtaxes. However he must have made quite a bit of money thru the entire year and Is in a higher tax bracket and has to pay 2-3 times as much in taxes so the trick is spend the money needed to bring you into the llwer tax bracket. To include money to charity, donating clothes and stuff to charity, also you can rightoff what ever you buy for your business ( tax deductible)
