Assalamualikum. Your lecture was a good reminder to let the kids settle in US as US citizens. However I would like to add it is better to leave if something is disputed about like birthday or halloween. As if after death it turns out to be haram there is no going back and changing your deed. So if possible its better to be safe than sorry. Also, when I explained to my non muslim friends I avoid celebrating birthday they ended up sharing how its difficult for them to keep up the ever growing demand of their kids every year on their birthdays. Not to mention how kids end up fighting amongst themselves and with their parents for how injust ones gift was with respect to other. May allah protect us from any wrong doing. And accept our action as refrain as ibadah.

Walikum assalaam wrwb Sheikh, what I get from this lecture is we should be more focused on practicing/protecting the deen. We know that majority of the festivals are consumer holidays. Their main purpose is to stimulate the economy. Personally, I encourage my children to fast during their birthdays and show gratitude to Allah swt and parents. When it comes to Thanksgiving I want my children to stand with the Native Americans and Justice and Truth. I do not want my children to follow something blindly just because the majority is doing it. We can always reason. Also, take the middle path which is recommended.

You believe the KZbin historians too much. Why can't you stand with everyone. You're raising your children to be white haters. Do some real research. Thanksgiving is about unity. Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday. It's a national holiday. Even Muslim countries celebrate national holidays.

Although some cultural celebrations aren’t religious they still aren’t good to celebrate. Thanksgiving is a celebration of the genocide of the Native American people. Most Native Americans do not celebrate thanksgiving because it is a day of mourning for them. As a Muslim, and as a descendant of the Native American people, I refuse to celebrate a holiday that stems from the oppression and murder of the Native people. The 4th of July in the United States I also refuse to celebrate. It is an American tradition not related to religion but it is also another twisted holiday. Yea it is the day the US was freed from the British empire but who exactly was free? The white slave owners were free but all of the African American slaves were not free. And some of those slaves were Muslims from Africa. They were still being tortured until a hundred years later when they “technically” were freed. And even till this day are still oppressed. So Independence Day is a joke to me. I’m not telling anyone they shouldn’t celebrate these days because I have no right to do that. I just gave the reasons why I don’t and why people need to look into things before they decide to “celebrate” them. Don’t just follow others blindly for the sake of “culture”.

I find it quite convenient that natives forget their own history of genocidal wars against other native tribes. Just look at what the Sioux did to the Kiowa and the Shoni tribes. Maybe the Sioux should apologize for all those massacres. Oh wait, most of the people they could apologize to are dead. People of English descent in the US are more native the New England than the Sioux are to the Black Hills. Also, it is very well documented that Native American tribes owned African slaves. People like you want all the benefits of living in the US but will never actually leave or go and live on the reservations because the Whiteman built an objectively better nation that is the most prosperous nation in history.

all i see in the comments are people making flimsy point off of his points. when your intention isnt to honour a pagan god or transgress, whats the harm in celebrating personal feats and celebrations? one might ask why do this just to fit into society? yes. thats a valid point that you are making but you completely missed the sheikhs point. he isnt encouraging the celebrations. he is merely pointing out that celebrating it when youre a part of a larger society that does celebrate things like this isnt exactly haram. you can choose to do it or not. this is just for the people that want to do it and wanna know if theyre doing something wrong by celebrating something. if you are gonna draw parallels on paganism and something like celebrating a birthday, clearly youre reading too much into it. if you intend for it to be a fun time with you and your family and friends, whats the harm in that? then again. this is for the people that want to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays. personally, ive never felt the need or desire to celebrate it nor do i find the idea appealing but all im gonna say is that people are reading too much into things that are done without any intention of wrongdoing and we all know that in islam, niyyath is everything.

Whic one is problematic; wel done or rare? On which basis? (Answer is very important for me as in my circle we know only weldone steak) I don't know id there will be someone from the te following the comments as this video is 2 years old. I agree with most of what brother Qadhi says in this lecture. The only thing that troubles me, is when he said we should disregard the pagan origins of certain celebrations that don’t have religious connections, and celebrate them in the way that the people do today. I think more context and explanation needs to be done. Or else people might get the impression that it’s ok to celebrate Halloween.
