As we already talked about, in my opinion its not as black and white as it may sound at first. Of course the design process of making a bag is very complex, and can take a lot of time and money, but there are possibilities to cut costs while still get a high quality, and depending on the effort one puts into the project, there can come out very great products. All big bag companies out there started with people who had to scratch their own itch and therefore made a product that served a purpose no other product could serve - specifically for these people. and as there are many other people on the world sharing the same problem, this can get very interesting. your opinion is always welcome, and I have to thank you deeply for this great video series. Especially for people who didnt come into close contact with the textile industry yet, this is a very valuable series.

Thanks, mate. I'm glad that you like the series. I agree with you : with the right dedication and some good contacts you could cut down costs of your first sample quite a bit. Nevertheless you still need some money. Even if you get materials for free, you need to pay the person that makes the sample or fly to the factory to discuss details. So there is still some budget needed. Furthermore, just like you I'd love to put as much dedication and time into such a project, which would make working my job and paying rent difficult. With all of this in mind to me such a project seems too big of a task. But maybe this changes in the future 😉

@@Youknowthebo Look Bo you might be able to get a gig on a bag like Chase Reeves who is just providing input on a bag but to be a real bag designer you have got to be able to build the bag yourself. That is the starting point.

Great information. This puts things in perspective for me. Not only will it take a year for me to get a bag made, but it will take even longer to get it on the shelves, anywhere.

Interesting video as always Bo. I actually designed my own backpack and went through a few manufacturers prototypes through Alibaba. It took probably 6-12 months from design to final prototype but it failed spectacularly on Kickstarter. Marketing is much more important that I anticipated but it was a great experience to go through the design and prototyping process. I will probably make a video on the process in the future if theres interest. I like your idea of partnering with an existing brand though. I'd probably choose Arcteryx and do an improved version of the Nomin Pack.

I like how compact and nice looks the HURU but i don't like the black inside, I like the system of the peloton to carry voluminous packs but it's too large and not as good looking. Best, G

thanks for this very informative and entertaining series, Bo. and a big shoutout to Roi, for sharing his time and knowledge. a great compromise for a bag would be 1. 30-35 liters(panel loader). 2. stand up on it's own. 3. edc/2-3 days travel/day hike.

Hey Fred. I really like the attitude atd1 on my motorcycle. It's not a dedicated motorcycle backpack like the velomacchi rolltop for instance (which is also one of my recommendations on a bike). However, it is extremely versatile on and of the bike due to its clamshell and rolltop opening. There are a few caveats that you can see in my review, but nevertheless I used this probably the most on my bike

Good morning Bo, from California. Thank you for this fascinating look behind the scenes and for helping us better understand all the steps required to bring a bag to life. I think you should consider a Kickstarter of your own. You always give insightful reviews that impact us and how we think about using a bag we are considering purchasing, and you always raise the cons of a specific design or feature. You also have a platform, and followers. Personally I'd back you Danke!

A collaboration would make sense; with a team that have manufactured already. Many manufacturers already team up with interest groups during the design process and survey their existing customers.

Thanks, Jeff and Gerald. I'd love to work with a brand in the future to create a bag. But doing it all on my own would just be a too big of a project (in regards to time, budget and knowledge). There is nothing stopping anyone from modifying the bag they have to suit their own needs better. Some customisation is easy but even then, may not work. Adding waist belts can be done on many bags even if the manufacture thinks the bag too small to include the option. Even a 15-17 litre bag full of tech gear can be very heavy when trekking around hills. Adding sternum straps probably will not work unless you can also change the shoulder straps. Adding internal organisation, even sewing in pockets or fixing up dividers to work with Velcro isn't too hard to do. Allowing pass through cables to charge tech on the go can also be done, particularly internally so as not to break any exterior water resistance the bag has. The nearer you can get to the optimium bag for your needs the less modification it would require to go a little further.
