Dr. Demi, thank you so much for articulating these issues so clearly. I hope that we will all go beyond offering applauses to actually digging in to resolve the issues you have brought to light.

Great talk. You have exposed a culture that deserves to be broken.

This is an inspiring talk, but it is typical of the topic, a year later & only 3.5k views, compare that to other talks at TED. It is not just in academia but it seems this is a more generic issue of lack of interest in equality Great talk!

Thank you for sharing your story. This really hits home as I’m also a female science student and I was denied the right to apply for honors because the head of department said “ I won’t fit in well here “. I don’t know if she meant my looks ? Because my colleagues with the same marks as mine entered. Being told that really hurts, took me 2 years to finally come to terms to this and start healing. We need to stop pretending Bias in science doesn’t exist. This system really messes up with people’s growth.

There's so much to unravel in 17 minutes. Well researched and excellent delivery. The problem has been rightly identified, but I have a couple reservations. Do the male folks truly genuinely believe that women have a vital role to play in STEM? If the opposite is the case - how can this narrative be changed? Who is to be held responsible for ensuring women have a safe workspace and that there is no freeloading by female outliers who may wish to ride the tide of the "affirmative action" quota systems. Bravo Demi!

What happened to these women, and what happens to women in academia every single day is so horrible!! Thanks a lot for bringing this up. This is so raw and necessary.

You're such a strong lady. You didn't only tackle the "gender" objections you wisely overcame the "racists" remarks while working the field. Hats off

These stories are so disheartening. I think it was indicative of the way these sabotaging systems also result in internalized and unrecognized misogyny that the opening example called a “handyman” to fix the problem rather than a non-gendered plumber. Another problematic example is the question she was asked “Do you want to be successful or do you just want to be a wife and mother.” It was addressed that she should be able to be a wife and mother AND “successful,” but not that it is perfectly fine and successful to be a wife and mother alone
