If descent (ascent, in this case) meant anything, nearly everyone in Europe would be able to speak fluent Latin and Greek. He may have an Italian _surname,_ but he clearly can't speak the language. It's not just the comically bad accent, he's clueless about Italian grammar (even Google Translate would have done a better job).
@vanpallandt57993 жыл бұрын
Surely the joke ..or rather irony is that the producers behaved exactly like typical Brits in assuming that he could speak Italian because of his name..same as i know British Chinese who cant speak hardly a word of Mandarin/Cantonese bar basics but ppl assume they must

@@vanpallandt5799 - Well, maybe they assumed it, or maybe he told them he could, to get the part (and they didn't bother to ask anyone else to check). Actors frequently list things in their CV (singing, dancing, riding horses, doing accents, etc.) that they've never even _tried_ to do.

Jen isn't supposed to speak Italian, that's the whole point. But the other guy is supposed to be fluent, and he sounds worse than her. It's not just the accent, anyway; his grammar is also messed up. I think they just gave him the lines in English and asked him to translate, trusting that he was fluent because he had an Italian surname. Reminds me of when John Leguizamo was cast in Spanish-language film, and they found he couldn't actually speak Spanish. At least on that one they noticed it in time and hired a dialogue coach.

@@vanpallandt5799 - Well, most people learn foreign languages from non-native teachers (many of whom aren't really fluent because they only speak it in class), so they learn it with a dodgy accent to begin with. But if you learn it from (and speak it regularly with) native speakers, there's no reason why you can't acquire their accent (which might be just one of many common accents in that language, of course). And you don't really have to _lose_ an accent to be able to do others, of course. Plenty of people born in Scotland _can_ speak English with an RP accent. They just choose not to. ;-)

@@RFC-3514 i have to say that having lived in South America for 5 years, i am not convinced. The funny thing is, Italian is similar to English sometimes because both borrowed a lot from Latin. That’s why learning Romance languages is slightly easier if you know English. Some words sound almost identical. I think they should be able to figure out Jen is pretending easily, which seems to be a part of the joke. I don’t really know Italian, but the way Jen pronounces things seems great. I’m sure she’d be really good at picking up languages. Didn’t she know a bit of German too (“ICH.BIN.EIN.NERD” and “yeah, nothing sounds more romantic than wine and schweinefleisch”)?
