Can corroborate. In the web design studio I worked in during the early 2000s I was Roy, and the coders and programmers were Moss. It's uncanny how realistic this is, and as such, is only funny to those of us who know.

Reminds me of a time when I was working at the hospital. I was heading down to the cafeteria for lunch. When in the elevator, the doors open and staring at me are about 6-8 police and a guy wearing an orange jumpsuit, with handcuffs. All of them had kevlar on. After a moment I said, "going down?" The man in orange starts to walk forward but is stopped and pulled back by one of the police. Who says, " we'll get the next one." (elevator doors shut)

You know it was. I am serious here. Even today they use Windows for critical infrastructures and when they use Linux they just get a great deal from Microsoft. That happened for example here in germany in munich. And a lot of IOT stuff that would work fine on a Pi zero has often an entire windows OS. Robots are often controlled on Windows. Only God knows why.

I kid you not! Back in the nineties I worked in an inhouse 'tech' support area for a major bank and the first question asked was 'have you tried turning it off an on again!' 🤣 Problem was people were having to use their computers without any real training. Best call we got was a Senior General manager (GM, God to us) ringing to say his 'cup holder' wasn't working. The poor tech spent over an hour trying to work out what was going on when he realised the GM was using the CD loader tray to sit his coffee cup on!....... Priceless!!!!!!

My son was in Law School in NYC when students had to have a laptop running Vista to take exams. He discovered after talking to various IT people that Vista seemed to crash at semi regular intervals requiring a complete reinstall of everything, at least in my son's case. He said it was not uncommon during an exam to have some poor soul scream a string of obscenities as his Vista machine crashed. I bought my son his first MacBook Pro to use for his regular work and saving the Vista machine for exams only. One can only imagine how many man hours and money has been lost due to Microsoft's buggy unstable software.

That was the funny thing, Vista wasn't shit because of buggy Microsoft code. The MS code was good, it's just that Vista was the first windows OS where security was even a thought, so they had to change a lot of stuff, including the driver model. That was where the crap part of Vista came from. Most laptops and peripherals had buggy drivers, which caused Vista massive issues. Add on top of that the entire marketing scandal where they slapped on Vista ready stickers even in machines that clearly couldn't run it, cemented Vista's reputation. By the time Windows 7 came out, the driver issues were sorted out, the UI adjusted, people trained and hardware sufficiently powerful enough that Win7 gained a solid reputation. Vista by that time was good too.

@@slash2bot Vista was incredibly resource intensive due to the sheer volume of features they introduced. Unfortunately computers were being marketed in 2 different ways; 'Vista Ready' - for computers that were actually powerful enough to run the OS properly and 'Vista Compatible' - for computers where it would technically install and run but the experience was terrible. I suspect that the laptop in question, from the original post, would have been in the latter category.

@@philipmcfarlane Yes, unfortunately that was also when the trend of cheap netbooks also started. They were fine if you ran Linux on them, which a lot of them did run. But a lot of them also had XP, Vista and even 7 on them. A task for which they were truly unsuitable for.

Working in IT years back, a user rang to say his computer wasn't working; even turning it off and on again didn't help - all he had was a black screen. Is the screen switched on? I never turn it off he says. Eventually I have to go and investigate only to find the the monitor isn't even plugged in. He can't understand it. Turns out the cleaner used the socket to plug in her new vacuum because it had a shorted lead.
